He’s Coming Home!

Wednesday

Today was the day…

David began his long trip home. He’s 31 and he can take care of himself, that’s for sure, but my heart sings that he’s coming home. The joy is the same as 2013 when Stacey and Adrian ended their year long visit to South East Asia and they came home. This picture! 18th August 2013.

David is not coming home to Cape Town. He’s going to be hanging out in Jo’burg for a while, but still, he’s going to be back on SA soil.

We will see him next week when we fly up to Jo’burg to go to the Drakensburg.

Meantime, today we went to the beach for a swim. The water was murky and the waves were big. It meant I swam out of my depth. I’m always super jittery after there’s been a shark attack off SA waters – even if it was Plettenberg Bay. It is always a reminder I’m visiting a predator’s home when I swim. I just love swimming in the ocean. I never knew I would get such pleasure out of it, but the gloss is taken off when I’m reminded of some of some of its scariest occupants. False Bay still apparently has Port and Starboard (the two killer whales) in residence and they go a long way to keep the great whites out, but you just never know! There was a massive high tide overnight that flattened all the sand.

One of the heart-warming moments which also happened at the beach this morning was we saw Jaco. He was homeless and last year spent most of the year sleeping on one of the cat walk benches. He always looked run down with the world on his shoulders.  Today we hardly recognised him. He stopped us as we walked past and started telling us that he was off the streets, no longer homeless and that his family was taking care of him. It was so wonderful to hear. He was looking so much better! He really cleans up well!

David’s now over India.

8:30pm our time, he should arrive in Doha. A long night ahead!

How Rich Am I Really?

Tuesday

Today was the day…

That began as usual with me having coffee in my rocking chair. Mike and I began a long conversation about wealth. We spoke about being looked down upon because we were not ‘wealthy enough’ for some (small minded) people with whom our paths had crossed.  Everything is relative. The brick house in an informal settlement is better than the shack. The shack is better than nothing.

The conversation then moved on a layer. What about the things money can’t buy. How’s our  health? Surely  having no medical issues and being well and healthy makes up riches of a different kind. Add to that mental and emotional normalcy  and the wealth grows. A good sense of well being. A heart of joy. An appreciation for life. An attitude of gratitude. A positive outlook. Suddenly, the money in the bank is less significant and the emotional non-tangible riches are a deep tank of eudaimonia.

But then there was another layer of riches. How is our relationship? What value can be put on a happy marriage? It is worth gold.

I do not take this for granted or lightly. Neither do I take the relationships I have with my children & my sweet gorgeous precious Elsie. I’m also privileged to have a good relationship with Julian & his family.  I haven’t mentioned it here yet, but I am super excited that  Jess and Gerrie become parents early next year, making Julian take on the best title of all. Grandpa!

I don’t speak to my sister too often, but I know she’s there and I’m so happy she’s has come through her  massive surgery. And, my delight that Anne is now a Granny also knows no bounds!

The thing with relationships that is profound is they will continue in eternity. We will be spending forever with people. Material things will pass away. Our health will fail, but relationships extend into eternity.

Yes, that Tuesday morning coffee conversation was a deep one.

Great Work Day

Monday

Today was the day…

That it rained. It was unexpected. I had half thought we’d go to the beach, but that didn’t happen. Just as well because Courage forgot his key and we needed to be around to let him in. Ruth came, so she cleaned the Seaview Apartment and some other cleaning as well. In the afternoon, the rain gave way to sunshine, so some of the laundry got dried.  No new bookings today. Next guests arrive on Friday and another two on Sunday.

It was a great work day. My company directors are travelling so there’s extra work to do and it’s something different.

Google reminded me of what the kitchen looked like two years ago…

Lounge two years ago…

I heard from David today. He flew from Seoul to Bangkok and is there for two nights. Tomorrow night he’ll have dinner with (SA) friends before flying back on Wednesday. I think he lands in Johannesburg on Thursday. I presume he’s been in contact with the Jo’burg family regarding his arrival time!

Horrible to hear about the second fatal shark attack in Plett yesterday. When we swim in the sea we are in their territory. Can’t blame the shark, but so very tragic.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

A Charming Day It Is!

Sunday

Today was the day…

We rested. Ken left early and the Seaview Apartment couple checked out at the same time, so apart from Dakota in the Little Lookout, all was quiet on the home front. We went to the beach and had our first swim with the shark nets back in the water. The sea was stunningly clear & warmer than the other day, although my watch said 13C. I don’t think it was that cold. I swam a bit but really just bobbed around and enjoyed the beauty of the day.

It was Jane Austen in Northanger Abbey Chapter 5 who wrote, “For a fine Sunday in Bath empties every house of its inhabitants, and all the world appears on such occasion, to walk about, and tell their acquaintances what a charming day it is.” I can sense summer coming and Fish Hoek will resemble Bath on a charming day. The crowds came and spread themselves on the expanse of beach at the lowest of tides & it is true to say that those of us who occupied the bench did comment on the pleasantness of the weather.

We walked home, had breakfast and then rested. We literally did nothing the entire day but lie about, read and rest.  In the afternoon, when Mike awoke from a midday sleep, we had tea on the balcony.

While on the side balcony, I suddenly spotted a tiny buck. At first it ran away but after a few minutes it retraced its steps and walked behind our house and settled to some grazing.

Mike is now rearranging the lounge…again.

I think we’ll live with it like this for a while.

Now we need to have dinner.

Amazing Fish Hoek Through Aly’s Lens

Saturday

Today was the day…

Of Heritage Day in South Africa.  The day was calm with a sunny start. Lots of things happened at the beach and in the sea & they were perfectly captured by Aly Ison, so I give her all the credit for the amazing photos she posted on Facebook. There were loads of surf-skiers out on the water and Aly was down on the beach watching them set off…

Then way before I walked past, I heard a report that an aggressive seal was on the beach and had tried to bite someone. Aly got the photos…it looks a bit injured…

Don’t come near me!

The folks that deal with injured seals came but by the time they arrived, it had disappeared.

I walked down to the shops to buy breakfast food. Came home and had breakfast on the balcony.

Throughout the day there was something to see including multiple whale sightings.  Again Aly Ison was down on the road with her massive lens…

And in the skies above, the little acrobatic plane that freaked me out the other week… Aly got the photo…

Meanwhile, in Simon’s Town there was a regatta of sorts – Aly again…. She is such a talented photographer.

So there was plenty to see this Heritage Day and Aly Ison summed it up in her amazing photos.

I had a good chat with Stacey who is looking so well. Elsie popped in and out, but I had her watching intently as I caught a fly in a glass, covered it with a piece of paper and let it go off the balcony. Some things are just too important to miss!

We have a young lady staying in the Little Lookout for another month. She is on her own and so I invited her up for tea. We had tea together and I found out  more about her.

We had Ken come over for dinner. He leaves tomorrow. We had a good chat. He’s a really nice guy. We like Ken. He went off to find a place to watch the rugby. Mike is still busy with the conference and I am now going to shower because I’m cold.

A great Saturday.

Guests from the Cottage Up

Friday

Today was the day…

That I knew was going to be busy. No swimming. I got straight to work and when Alan checked out of the Seaview Apartment, Mike and I went down to clean the unit. We also got the cottage ready for Joti who comes for the odd night here and there. She has bought a plot just up the road and comes to garden. She’s no trouble. Tonight is a full night. A couple of travelling girls arrived for two nights at the Seaview Apartment and while they were still unpacking, Joti arrived. We have guests from the cottage up, Joti in the cottage, a single girl in the Little Lookout, the two girls in the Seaview Apartment, us and then friend Ken on the top floor. He leaves on Sunday.

I worked for almost 6 hours and at just after 4pm decided to go for a walk. I walked Highway all the way to Kommetjie Rd.

Then down to Valyland before coming back along Hillside and up to Highway via Daisy Lane which has sprung to life and is earning the name I’ve given it…

Home for dinner and a quiet evening. Mike has actually been at a conference this week. It’s all been online and the sessions are available afterwards for viewing, so he’s been tied up watching them during the last few days. Courage and Brian left early today. They had worked really hard this week and one evening only left at nearly 6pm. There’s been lots of messy work being done, including the laundry roof which then leaked a bit with the rain, so that required repair.

One of my go-to videos on YouTube right now are on Cruise tips. We’ve cruised lots of times but the one that is coming up is 30 nights. That’s a lot of time in a confined cabin.  There are a couple of YouTubers who are real cruise fundis and have some amazing ideas for cabin organisation that I haven’t thought of. One of them was magnetic hooks to hang on the cabin wall, so I’m looking them up on Takealot.

Yay for the weekend! I’m so happy.

Sugar Sandwiches

Thursday

Today was the day…

That was cold. I went out on the balcony early in the morning and returned with the message that we would definitely NOT be going to the beach. It was way too cold.  But an hour later, the sea looked so calm and the sun was shining. I couldn’t help myself, so off we went. The sand piles were closer to the sea wall and the CAT came back to do some more shoveling.

The water was very cold! I managed 24 minutes and then scuttled off to get changed. A hot shower at home sorted out my internal freeze.

I had a number of appointments today. I got to have my hair cut and then after two more work related meetings, I went off in the rain to the podiatrist. Such success I have enjoyed with the inserts he made for my shoes, that I’ve ordered another set and dropped off my new sandals that arrived yesterday so he can put in additional arch support. This is really good news for me because it means this summer I can finally and safely get my feet into more than just my walking shoes. My toes will see the sun.

This evening we walked to the end of the road and on the way we enjoyed a magnificent rainbow.

It disappeared but returned after we got home, albeit not quite so clear. I went out on the balcony to get the photo. After a decidedly fancourt slate kind of day, the sky brightened up the evening sky.

This evening after dinner, I had a piece of toast. I asked Mike if he had ever had sugar sandwiches! When I was a child, I remember buttering bread and sprinkling sugar on it. Believe it or not, it is a thing…

Mike said he had never had sugar sandwiches, but he did take raw carrots, wash them off and dip them in sugar before eating them. Apparently, he ate so many raw carrots, his family said it was no wonder he was such a red head! If anyone loves sugar, it’s Mike. And he’s just way too active to gain weight.

A good busy Thursday – I knocked a lot of stuff off my to-do list and now Friday awaits. We have two guests arriving, so there is some more work to be done.

Today at the Beach…

Wednesday

Today was the day…

We went to the beach. As soon as we got down there we saw what others had been talking about. A massive grader had come and scooped up a huge ridge of sand, plonking it in a long line half way towards the water. It immediately became a playground for children and adults alike. This was as we arrived.

From the bench…

And as we left…

It will be interesting to see what it looks like once the tide has come in and out a few times.

The other thing about our beach visit is the sea water is warming up. I swam for about 35 minutes. It was so good. It makes all the difference to my physical and mental health!

David has completed his cycle trip through South Korea. Such a big achievement, really it is. It’s crazy to think by this time next week, God willing, he’ll be back on SA soil, albeit not in Cape Town. He catches a train back to Seoul tomorrow.

For the rest of today, I worked more than 7 hours. The rest of the month & the first of next month is going to be busy.

Another beautiful spring day. Tomorrow, rain is forecast.

We Moved a Couch Out

Tuesday

Today was the day…

We moved a couch out. We have 3 x 2-seater leather couches. It is our plan to get a new couch that matches the beach house vibe we have always wanted. The dark leather doesn’t work. So, we moved one of our couches to the Seaview Apartment. We moved the couch in the Seaview Apartment into the cottage. The L-shaped couch in the cottage which is as old as the hills and is falling apart was whisked off by Courage to his new flat! He wasted no time in getting that job done. It has made our lounge look so much bigger…

I like less! Less is better. We are planning on taking these two couches down to the cottage and getting a new one, but it will probably take months for that to happen, so this is it for the moment.

The day was as splendid as the photo shows. Hardly any wind and lots of beautiful sunshine. Riana came for tea. There were apparently whales in the bay but I didn’t notice them. They need to make some sort of noise when they go past but they never do!

Mike and I changed our routine a bit and took a midday walk down the road to see the workers at work. There is one new build underway and one major renovation. Workers abounded at both sites.

After the Queen’s funeral yesterday, I suddenly remembered Julian has this… now all 4 of those who signed are laid to rest at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor.

David has his last cycle ride tomorrow. He’s gone quite some distance. Tomorrow is his final 100km.

Stacey sent me this today…priceless!

So cute!

I worked 7 hours and am now waiting to hear back from my friend Debbie to find out if she is available for a video call as it’s her birthday.

Queen’s Funeral

Monday

Today was the day…

Of the Queen’s funeral. Everyone knows about it today, but one day in the future, some will say, ‘when was the Queen’s funeral?’ and they will happen upon this blog and get the answer. I watched from my office…

Then when the main proceedings got under way at Westminster Abbey, we moved the TV (it’s on wheels) – I turned my work clock off and we watched the funeral service. The Archbishop of Canterbury,  Justin Welby, presented a meaningful message with powerful,  carefully measured words – a good Gospel message – with a mind-blowing audience.

After a bit more work, I paused to watch the procession pass Buckingham palace –

The UK certainly know how to bring out the pageantry and pull off a spectacle with precision and order. Centuries of tradition & history unfolding before our eyes. Windsor Castle where the Queen ended her journey, was built in 1070, so it’s 952 years old.

The gold Imperial State Crown has more than 2000 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls and 4 rubies. One of the sapphires is thought to have been discovered in 1163 in the tomb of St Edward the Confessor. The Sovereign’s Scepter with Cross and the Sovereign’s Orb – these two items are said to symbolize her relationship with God and power. The scepter is said to have been used at every coronation since 1661. The orb is used to remind the monarch that their power comes from God.  It was very moving to see these items taken off the coffin and placed on the chapel altar. They will be taken up by King Charles.  Hats off to the Queen’s Pall Bearers. All the events seem to go off so smoothly.

It’s the end of an era to be sure.

On the home front, it was busy. Ken arrived for a week. And a guest arrived in the Little Look out for 5 weeks. Tomorrow another guest arrives for 3 nights in the Seaview Apartment before he leaves on Friday and a couple arrive for the weekend. Ruth came today to do the required cleaning. That was helpful.

Tomorrow I have 5 meetings, so it’s going to be a busy day.

One of the Bible passages read at QEII’s funeral today…

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Load Shedding Level 6

Sunday

Today was the day…

We went to level 6 load shedding. It started at 4am this morning, so we woke up with the lights of Fish Hoek mostly off. While we have a solid solar system,  load shedding still affects us in two ways.

  1. If we use too many appliances simultaneously, we’ll overload our solar system and it will trip. With guests in the Seaview apartment, we don’t want to risk it, so we only use one appliance at a time.
  2. When there are long stretches of load shedding our hot water cylinder doesn’t stay hot. When we left for the beach, the electricity had only just come on. The water temperature was 30C.

Apart from those two restrictions, everything keeps going normally – fridge, lights, all plugs and the internet. Level 6 continues tomorrow.

The day dawned with a very flat sea. A few showers were forecast but the sun shone early and we decided to go to the beach. The sea was cold but the water crystal clear and swimming conditions were perfect. I swam to the barrel and back. Then the life saving club put our orange buoys for their nippers event. That was something new for me to swim to, so I swam out to the one in the deepest water and then back towards the cat walk.

Back home, we had a quiet morning. In the afternoon, we took a drive to Jen’s house to see how that is getting on. It’s coming on nicely.

On passing Simon’s Town, I spotted this restaurant and will be sure to return one day in the future. Thinking of David!

David had a weekend of teaching. He has a couple more days cycling before he begins to wind his way back to Seoul and then Bangkok. A week tomorrow, God willing, he climbs on a plane to come back to SA. Crazy how fast time has gone.

New Flat Tenants

Saturday

Today was the day…

Mike and I went for a walk to buy some yoghurt as we had run out and needed it for breakfast. We decided to go to the Glencairn Spar and left at about 7:45am. It was a slow walk there, looking at the mountainside houses from below.  We got to Glencairn, picked up a couple of things and headed home. It began to rain, so there was no dawdling. We put our foot down, literally and hot-footed it home as fast as our feet could carry us. We did get a little wet, but got a really good work-out in!

Breakfast, a quick chat with Stacey and Elsie and then it was time to go and show our new tenants around the flat.  They came to clean and measure and see what needed to be done. They were thrilled. The flat has two bedrooms – one about 20m2.  The other very small – about 12m2. Another 30m2 makes up the lounge and kitchen and then there is passage space and a bathroom. Altogether, it’s about 73m2. This family of four are coming from a bedroom where all of them slept in about 12m2. For them, the flat is very spacious. Apart from the two bedrooms, there’s also the built in balcony. Our new tenants…

Courage and his family!!

We left them cleaning and went to buy a couple of supplies for some repairs that need to be done. They move in at the end of the month & are so appreciative!

We had more shopping to do so eventually got home after 2pm.

It’s been a cloudy day. A quiet evening lies ahead.

Psalm 27:14
Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord.

We absolutely let our hearts take Courage!

23 Months

Friday

Today was the day…

We’ve been in the house for 23 months. Next month it’s 2 years. I haven’t always remembered the monthly anniversaries of us moving here, but today I’ve been aware of it. This is because this week there have been some things happen that we have never seen before and it reminds me of the uniqueness of the location. The one was the Mama whale with her calf,  that I waxed lyrical about the other day (I see the video has been taken down). Today we saw another sight I’ve not seen before. There was a little orange stunt plane that flew really low over the bay right in front of our house. It then flew vertically upwards before doing a somersault! It was both amazing and alarming at the same time. I heard the plane coming and could hear it was very close by. Then I heard a change in the engine noise and wondered what was happening. After the flip, it flew off into the distance.

It’s been a beautiful day which has ended with quite a lot of cloud cover…

Meanwhile, Mike had a job to do today – he needed to finish the lights on the cottage. He’s rigged up a sensor & put them on the solar system, so when night falls, the lights  come on and light up the main stairs.

This week Courage also finished painting the laundry. Part of the roof has been replaced to add some light…

Now we are gearing up to get the cottage roof cleaned. I was interested to see the house down the road (with a massive roof) being cleaned the same way we intend doing it…

The whole left side was once as black as the chimney side. Courage and Brian can get ours done before full summer starts.

This afternoon, I walked down to my flat in Fish Hoek. The final belongings of the tenant have been moved and I went to pick up the keys. Tomorrow is a special day because we meet the new tenants at the flat to show them around & leave them to start cleaning. They are beyond excited. There’s maintenance work to be done…

  • Broken window latches
  • No toilet cistern cover
  • Built in balcony roof is leaking badly
  • Woodwork needs sanding down and varnishing

For the rest it just needs a good scrub.

And so the week has ended and while I’ll work Monday, all my British based colleagues are taking the day off for the Queen’s funeral. I’ll work a few hours and then do the same.

This is the Bible verse from my diary today and it always reminds me of Stacey as she has embroidered it and it’s framed and on her wall…

Proverbs 24:3-4

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

David’s Mammoth Cycle Tour

Thursday

Today was the day…

We got more photos from David. He gave us an extensive catch up yesterday and I saved all the photos, but then the whale grabbed my attention & with that being the most exciting sighting of a whale in all my life, it took precedence (sorry David!) So from what I can gather Tuesday David cycled 90km, yesterday 60km and today 100km! So he’s really been moving through South Korea. He said today was really hard as there was a mammoth uphill section and he was exhausted so he went against everything in his head and listened to his body and got off and walked! But the view at the top was epic and the restaurant at the top fed him well. His expression says it all…

South Korean breakfast for a hungry South African – I thought it looked pretty bad. David says he’s burning through so many calories, all and any food he eats doesn’t touch sides. He knows he’ll be hungry in a couple of hours. (Don’t ask what that grey sludgy stuff is!)

Then from the last few days and maybe weeks in South Korea, he just sent me a whole batch of photos. So this is quite the photo dump. It’s for the future when we want to look back

That’s his fold-up bike and the rucksack on the back contains all his worldly

He also went to the Seoul Olympic village (Seoul hosted the Olympics in 1988)

So that’s David’s news. It’s crazy because time is zipping by and he will be in Johannesburg in a couple of weeks. He’s not coming back to Cape Town immediately.

For the rest of today, Mike and I went to the follow up appointment for the Moderna vaccine trial. I worked for 5 hours and Mike rewired one of the lights in the cottage which the electrician missed. A productive day for sure.

Meanwhile, as I write, Elsie is at her first sport’s day!

Best Whale Sighting Yet

Wednesday

Today was the day…

We saw an absolute enormous Mama whale and her calf swim past. Normally, these whales don’t hang about. They are on their way somewhere and the come up for air and then go down to the depths, swim about 200m and come up for air again. It’s a case of now you see them, now you don’t.

But that didn’t happen today. For us it was the best whale sighting yet. It was as if the Mama whale was showing off her new baby. Welcome to the world little one. Mike’s photos…

I trawled Facebook looking for photos but found this. Someone (illegally) flew a drone above them. This video is wow! I hope you get to see it before it gets taken down.

Mesmerizing. They were so close to the shore and the sea was so clear today, even when they were underwater, you could see their outline.

Mike and I swam this morning. The difference between today and yesterday was today I was back in my summer swimming costume. No more spring suit. I swam half an hour and got in about 2km.

I worked 6 hours.

Guests in the Seaview Apartment left and so we cleaned it for the next guests who arrive Friday morning. And we got a 34-night booking for the Little Lookout.

I also had a good update from David. I’ll put those photos up tomorrow.

It’s been a beautiful spring day with no wind and bright sunshine.  We are grateful.
