Best Whale Sighting Yet

Wednesday

Today was the day…

We saw an absolute enormous Mama whale and her calf swim past. Normally, these whales don’t hang about. They are on their way somewhere and the come up for air and then go down to the depths, swim about 200m and come up for air again. It’s a case of now you see them, now you don’t.

But that didn’t happen today. For us it was the best whale sighting yet. It was as if the Mama whale was showing off her new baby. Welcome to the world little one. Mike’s photos…

I trawled Facebook looking for photos but found this. Someone (illegally) flew a drone above them. This video is wow! I hope you get to see it before it gets taken down.

Mesmerizing. They were so close to the shore and the sea was so clear today, even when they were underwater, you could see their outline.

Mike and I swam this morning. The difference between today and yesterday was today I was back in my summer swimming costume. No more spring suit. I swam half an hour and got in about 2km.

I worked 6 hours.

Guests in the Seaview Apartment left and so we cleaned it for the next guests who arrive Friday morning. And we got a 34-night booking for the Little Lookout.

I also had a good update from David. I’ll put those photos up tomorrow.

It’s been a beautiful spring day with no wind and bright sunshine.  We are grateful.

Laundry Roof

Tuesday

Today was the day…

We swam. It looked like it would be quite a calm day, so we went down at 8am and got home at about 9:15am. It was lovely. The wind has picked up now, but tomorrow looks like it will be a good swimming day as well…

That swim was so good for my body and mind. It’s worth getting back into it for sure.

David sent us an entertaining cycling video of him going through a long tunnel where the temperature dropped from warm and humid to icy – he thought the temperature dropped about 8C. This is him going in…

And coming out of it…he was only in it for about  minute. Light at the end of the cold tunnel…

Wish I could play you the video but I don’t know how to get it off Whatsapp. Those who have my number, let me know if you want me to forward you the video. David cycled 80km today. Quite a ride!  This useful website casts a bit of light on his journey…  Davids bike trip through SK

For me I worked 6 hours. We had a guest book the Little Lookout and arrive today. The Seaview Apartment guest leave tomorrow and the next ones are in on Friday. Things are beginning to pick up.

Meanwhile, Brian painted the laundry roof and now it looks a lot better. Before…

After…

Now we need to work on cleaning the roof of the cottage, repairing and painting that. We were quoted R24000, so didn’t jump all over that offer! It’s going to be challenging getting the roof cleaned and painted. Kick it down the road!

Amazing What You Can Do With Rocks

Monday

Today was the day…

Ruth came to clean the cottage. It was a reasonably good working day with about 6 hours done.

Mike and I walked to Fish Hoek in the morning as my regular Monday meeting was moved to tomorrow. In the late afternoon, we walked to the end of the street. While on the road, we met Gary and Sarah who live on Hillside Rd. Gary is American and Sarah South African. They said they watched our house go up during 2020. Each time they walked past they saw Werner and the workers doing something different.  They leave on Thursday for Europe where they will be walking the French Camino. Always fun to meet the neighbourhood folks.

I found this photo from more than 2 years ago before the house started being built. They had just built the stairs.

It’s amazing what you can do with rocks. The massive wall Courage has built has been built with the rocks from the land.

As we approach the two year mark of us having moved (it’s almost 23 months), we are still pinching ourselves that we get to live here.  The sea is never the same & the sweeping view is a front row seat to nature’s changing ways.  We are blessed.

Right now there is load shedding and the lights of Fish Hoek are out so it’s very dark outside. Our solar has been working well for us. Now that the cottage has been rewired, Mike connected our solar to the cottage lights. During load shedding, the guests in the cottage will at least have lights and WIFI.

Time for me to wind up for the evening.

My Statin Plan

Sunday

Today was the day…

…that dawned overcast and drizzly. It soon cleared and as it was cloudy, but pretty windless, Mike went for a long run – 11km in the end.  I rested in the morning and at lunchtime went for a walk to Fish Hoek, picked up, to be precise, 2l milk, a paw paw and 2 Woolworths chickens. I came back via Daisy Lane which is coming to life…

Home again, Mike carved the birds, froze one and we ate half the other.

The other night I was lying awake in the middle of the night. I checked my cell phone and one of the websites I open from time to time (Eat this, not that) had posted a story on some of the potential warning signs of clogged arteries. I’ve never really been concerned about having a heart attack, but as I approach my late 50s & know I have high cholesterol,  it’s time to take the possibility more seriously. As my family history is laden with heart disease, it’s not a forgone conclusion that despite not smoking, trying to keep my weight in check and exercising regularly,  I won’t be affected.  I opened the story. They mentioned  4 signs:

  1. Heart burn, 2. Chest pain, 3. Undue fatigue/ breathlessness, 4. High blood pressure

Working backwards, we have a blood pressure machine, so I know my BP is fine. I have a truckload of energy. I have experienced some heart sensation but never something that causes me to be out of breath or distressed. It’s almost like a stress pain. I remember when Julian had his stent put in. I had chest pain for a week.

It was the heart burn that worried me. I have been waking up several hours into the night and slugging back Gaviscon. Ah man! Now I had something to worry about. I also was getting headaches. Could my arteries be blocked? I was on the point of getting stressed over it (middle of the night anxiety is the worst).

Then last night, again awake in the small hours of the night, I googled this…

Oh joy! Headache, indigestion, sleep problems.  So, after taking 10mg for a month, I’ve jumped into full action and cut the whole lot in half.

They don’t have a line down the middle, so it’s ‘roughly’ in half, but ultimately I’ll be taking 5mg a day. At least now I know these little blighters are causing my distress,  I don’t feel like I’m having a heart attack.

The afternoon was restful and now the weekend is over and the new week is about to begin.

Perfect Day for Hiking

Saturday

Today was the day…

….that was windless and overcast – it was a perfect day for hiking. Our choice was Kalk Bay. We decided to walk the contour path from Kalk Bay to Clovelly and back over the Saddle down Trappies steps. From our house, we can see this route so it was a treat to walk it.

We first went up Trappies steps, but then cut across to the contour path.

The contour path above Kalk Bay – it was easy walking…

View of the harbour from above the fishermen’s flats…

Walking above BI, where Mike spent 3 important years of his life (1977-1979)

Edging towards the Fish Hoek side…

And soon our house came into view…

Overlooking Fish Hoek beach…what a view. Does anywhere in the world get better than this?

Overlooking Fish Hoek and the wetlands…

Part of the path above Clovelly was very easy going…

On the Clovelly side, overlooking the golf course.

And then back up the saddle and down Trappies to our start…

It was just under 4km and took us a very leisurely unrushed 2 hours. Such a wonderful morning walk.

From there we went shopping and got home around 2pm in time for a video call with Stacey.

Now it’s time to make dinner – the Berettas are coming.

The Sun Rose This Morning

Friday

Today was the day…

…after the Queen died. I’ve heard people say no matter what trouble comes, the sun will rise in the morning. And it did.

Mike and I went to the beach for a swim. Life just carried on. There is an old couple. He’s Arthur but I don’t know her name. They came to sit down next to us and I mentioned the Queen’s death to her. She said she was leaving for the UK tonight and would be there for 10 days – probably all of them will be the days of mourning. I updated yesterday’s blog so as to cover her passing which was announced early yesterday evening.

The swim was good. The water was cold – my watch recorded 13C,  but it was good to get back in and get some swimming done. It had no resemblance to a swimming pool. It was a good sea swim with rocking waves and a fresh little breeze. Home for breakfast and I got some work done.

When the 9th of the 9th rolls around, my memory turns to Arnold. Today it’s 15 years since he passed away. The pain of death never leaves – it may get slightly less, but the heartache remains.

Back at the house, Courage and Brian replaced part of the laundry roof. It had been leaking, so we had it covered with plastic. They stripped down the leaky part.

And then they covered it all up again with translucent roof sheets so the laundry would get some light.

That’s enough for this week. They are packing up and heading home.

It’s been a lovely day and we’ve been able to have the patio doors wide open…

Although it’s still quite cold once the sun sets.

And so it’s the weekend.

The Queen Has Died

Thursday

Today was the day…

…that began with a video call with David who was about 25km into a 40km or so day of cycling in Seoul. He stopped for lunch and a chat. It was a good catch up.

I worked for at least 8 hours but it was just in the final hours that I picked up on a story about the Queen’s health.  Apparently at lunchtime something happened with her that led Buckingham Palace to release this statement (royal.uk)

Immediately, her family rushed to be at her side.

CNN…

Sky news…

BBC…

She hasn’t really been the same since she lost her beloved Prince Philip. We’ll be watching to see what happens. I hope her end is gentle and kind – surrounded by her family. A great woman of faith, her eternal salvation is assured.

I wrote all of that and then an hour or two later, it was announced from Buckingham Palace that the Queen had quietly slipped away with Prince Charles and Princess Anne at her side. At that moment, Charles became King of England.

The Media were ready for their stories…including CNN.

The new line to the throne was also outlined by CNN.

But perhaps the most meaningful message doing the rounds was this one. The Queen was a woman of deep faith and did not hide it.

Not only is she reunited with Philip but also with Jesus.

David’s First Cycle

Wednesday

Today was the day…

We heard from David who did his first Cycle in South Korea. He said everything went fine and he got three stamps in his bike passport. Tomorrow, he cycles away from his Airbnb and onward to other digs, planning his stops to accommodate his teaching.

Today he rode along the river…I think it was this one in the middle.

Who knows where he’s off to tomorrow. He said he’d sent updates. Everything sounds really organised and most importantly, safe.

Meanwhile, this crazy thing happened in Cape Town the other day. A guy fell while climbing Table Mountain (the route up below the Cable Car). He was quite badly injured. A rescue team got to him and identified a helicopter wasn’t going to be able to get him off the mountain. The rescue team did what they had practiced but rarely implemented. They had the cable car stop overhead and after securing him, they winched him up.

Poor guy – for me that would have been terrifying!

Last evening the new guests arrived. It was a last minute booking so they didn’t read the write up too closely and didn’t know there were 64 steps. The lady is 8 months pregnant! Clearly undeterred by the stairs they’ve asked to stay on until next Wednesday.

The electrics of the cottage have be redone. However, the cottage has been left dusty and a bit disheveled.  Ruth will come to clean it on Monday.  Courage meantime, has some painting to do inside. There is a leak under the upstairs shower which needs to be fixed.

News from the Fish Hoek flat, moving day is 15th September, so the new tenant who I will soon reveal will be able to move in as soon as it’s cleaned.

Today we had a couple come visit. They plan on building down the road and they came to find out about building here and a few other things. It was a lovely tea we enjoyed together. No doubt our paths will cross again.

The Plan Was For a Simple Day

Tuesday

Today was the day…

That went from simple to really busy.  I didn’t have too much to do, I thought, and I think I have only worked about 4 hours, but it was full and crazy busy in the end.

First, I said goodbye to the guest in the Little Lookout.

Then I showed a neighbour through the cottage as he may need it for two weeks late next month.

After that I had coffee with Julian and then said goodbye to him. He won’t be back for three weeks.

I went back to work and was gearing myself up for a 1pm facial appointment when, at 12:35pm, we got a booking for TODAY. I didn’t know I had the ‘instant book and come today’ option on for the Seaview Apartment, but clearly I do. The guest booked but had an issue with the payment going through so it said she had 24 hours to pay. That won’t work because she was due to arrive today. She has to pay before arrival. By 9 minutes to 1pm, it had been sorted, I had her on Whatsapp and was arranging a time for her to arrive. The Seaview Apartment was clean & Courage had gone in to clean the windows, clean the braai and spray Q10 on a squeaky door.  All would be well, but there was some stress right there.

I made my 1pm appointment. It was a ‘super’ facial. You can’t turn back the clock but it feels wonderful afterwards.

Home by just after 2:30pm, did a bit more work and then the finishing touches to the unit and guests arriving imminently. They are here for 5 nights so that was worth the run-around.

We did a bit of a spring clean today as well. Some of the indoor pot plants have been taken outside and repotted. Courage cleaned our balcony and some of our windows. We did 3 loads of washing. Mike bought a new orchid for our bathroom. It’s beautiful.

This morning was very overcast but by lunchtime, the sun had come out and now it’s a lovely evening. It looks like it may stay like this for the rest of the week, although Thursday may be a little windy. It’s soon going to be time to get back to our daily swims.

Shew, a busy day comes to an end. Time to let the guests in and have some dinner.

David Arrives in Seoul

Monday

Today was the day…

David arrived in Seoul. There’s not much more to say except he did. I haven’t heard from him since he walked through the airport admiring what he described as ‘astonishing’ infrastructure.

Very empty and very very clean.

Since then (5am SA time this morning), I haven’t heard from him and as Seoul is 7 hours ahead of us, it’s not likely I’ll hear from him this evening.

Meanwhile, back at home two major things happened. Firstly, Courage and his assistant Brian cleaned out the cottage laundry. This looks pretty bad on the photo but it’s a start & once it’s been painted and the ceiling & roof fixed, it will be a far cry from the dingy room it has been.

We’ve also had electrician Alfonso in to rewire the entire cottage. The wiring was really in tatters and it was pretty dangerous.

They have quite a long way to go because it’s every plug and every light and that includes upstairs, downstairs, outside and the garage. I’ll be happy when it’s done.

Today it rained mainly in the morning but the afternoon turned sunny. The wind has dropped and the next few days appear to be a bit more like spring.

I’m looking forward to the rest of this week. When September comes, my work load drops a tad and that’s what I feel has happened already. I only worked 6 hours today. Mike and I cleaned the Seaview Apartment so that’s ready for the next booking

An easy going Monday.

Brain Gym

Sunday

Today was the day…

The cold front rolled in. I woke in the night and peered out the door. It was still and the stars shone brightly in the sky. For a short while, I thought a morning swim was a possibility, but by day break, the wind had picked up, the clear sky was replaced by looming clouds and the threat of rain was real. The sea was choppy with the northern wind blowing it  away from the coast. There would be no swimming today. We had some shopping to do and on my return, I sat in my rocking chair and enjoyed some brain gym.

Crosswords. Sudoku, Code Breakers and these:

You get given the clue and you have to decipher the quote. It makes your head spin! If you got numbers for letters, it would be easier, but making your brain identify one letter as another is  really good mental work.

It was good to have a video chat with Stacey. I heard from David as well. He has trimmed down his luggage and left it with a friend in Bangkok (a Fish Hoek friend who is teaching in Thailand). He’s ready to take his collapsible bike and head off to South Korea. The third part of his adventure starts tomorrow morning with a 2:30am flight from Bangkok to Seoul.

We watched a bit of Persuasion with Julian. He’s gone off to an appointment and Mike’s bread is about to come out his bread-maker. The rain has been pouring down. The tanks are 90% full. I have some work to do, so will get on with that shortly.

A new week begins.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.

Darling!

Saturday

Today was the day…

We went to Darling! The day began early because late last night we got a booking for the Little Lookout so we were up early ensuring it was ready. I knew it had been cleaned and it was just the bed that needed making. We got that sorted and I also washed the linen from the guests who left yesterday and hung those up on the scullery. Then we went out for breakfast before coming home to see the new guest in.

Then it was off to Darling. Our first stop was this little restaurant. Darling Main rd. doesn’t have too much to recommend it, but when we opened the door of the Marmalade Cat, it was jam packed with visitors.

Fortunately for us, a table had just become available so we had a slow-paced lunch. Then it was time to find us some flowers.  It’s a matter of driving around.  Some, like this mass of lilies was right next to the road.

Then there were Canola fields for as far as the eye can see….

White daisies by the millions…

And a single one…

Just so perfect.

It was a good day and fun to do something different. We didn’t find the massive display of variety but I think Hopefield is the place to go for that. Perhaps another year we’ll venture out again. What is evident – spring is coming.

Mike and I walked down to Fish Hoek to buy some fruit salad. It looked like a spectacular evening in Fish Hoek, but the photo doesn’t show the strong north wind bringing in a significant cold front which will arrive tomorrow.

Looking at Couches

Friday

Today was the day…

We took the afternoon off and went on a couch hunt. We actually didn’t know this was our mission. Initially, we were off to look for a laptop. We left later than intended and went further than we needed (Canal Walk). After looking at a couple of computer stores, we stumbled upon a furniture store and a little lightbulb went on! Aha! We are on a couch hunt. We have been in our new house for almost two years and bought over all our old furniture so we could settle in and decide what we wanted. Now we know. We don’t want our decades old leather couches. They are still great and I love leather, but they can go spend the rest of their life in the cottage and we can get something new. A lighter colour leather L-shape couch is what we have in mind. We looked at three main ones.

This humungous one was first…. massive couch – big price tag! Imported from Italy. Press a button and the chair on the left reclines. Press another button and sun bed on the right extends.

Onto another store…this one was too small…

This one was more of a possibility…

We need to look some more. There is no rush. Possibility 2023 will be the year of the couch.

We bought a whole lot of things including gifts for Elsie!

Meanwhile, over the sea in Bangkok, David made a purchase of his own!

It’s a foldable bike for him to use in South Korea and then to fold up and bring home. He bought it & then cycled 10km. He had joined a gym while in Bali and done some serious spinning, so his 10k jaunt was easier than expected. He is looking very fit and trim. He said he is always trying to compare his fitness to 10 years ago. David doesn’t read my blog so he didn’t know Mike had run 12.5km the other week. Here (for Future Family benefit) is our Whatsapp exchange.

You can imagine how much Mike laughed at “Dad is such a beast!”

Before we left for our outing, Mike and I cleaned the Seaview apartment because another couple of guests checked in this evening. They arrived not long after we got home from Canal walk. We were late because as we were leaving,  I discovered the parking ticket had got lost in the Mall when I pulled the shopping list out of the same pocket it was in. The penalty was less than 2 Euros (this is when converting to a foreign currency is helpful!) It did delay us getting home though.

Words Can’t Describe How Happy I Am Inside

Thursday

Today was the day…

“Words can’t describe how happy I am inside” – this was what our next tenant said when he heard he could move into the flat. He was so happy and excited. For him and his family, it is such a blessing. Today we had more communication with Penelope’s family. They will try and move her belongings into storage as quickly as possible. I’ve waived the bulk of this month’s rent in return for them emptying the flat swiftly. It will then be a matter of checking it out so the next tenants can move in.

1 September dawned with a hazy sunrise.

This after the night before where we were surprised by a random display of unexpected lightening, especially as there was no rain. The weather office explained….

Tomorrow, we expect rain in the morning. The guest checks out of the Seaview apartment and another couple arrive later in the day. Saturday should be relatively okay before a big cold front sweeps in on Sunday. Winter still but spring is coming.

I worked about 7 hours today. A good first day of September.

Monday Alfonso comes to start rewiring the cottage. It will be great to get that done.

And now it’s time for a walk.

My Flat

Wednesday

The dawn revealed the promise of a beautiful day…

It was a sunny day with the temperature rising to about 21C and the wind slowed its pace from yesterday’s enthusiastic gale. Today, there are no rattling doors and drafts.  The sea still looks murky and milky with varying shades of aqua spreading across its surface. The rollers and surf down at the beach still resemble the inside of a washing machine, which is not the type of sea I want to dive into.

For me the day began with a drive through to Claremont for ‘Tooth repair round 3’. The tooth colour technician was there to get the proper perfect shade for the new crown. The appointment lasted all of 5 minutes before I was ushered out. Home again in time for my 11am meeting.

In 2009, Mike and I bought a flat in Fish Hoek – it was right after the financial crash of 2008 and property prices plunged. At that very time, we had the opportunity of picking up a bargain.  Adrian and Stacey were getting married, so we bought the flat and Adrian and Stace moved in. When they went overseas, David moved in. When he moved out, Mark moved in. When Mark moved out, Penelope moved in. Very sadly, Penelope has been extremely ill and after an extended stay in hospital, it is clear she will not be able to return. Today, her family gave us notice and we will get the keys back in a month. Our next tenant is (hopefully) lined up – we will hear back from him for sure in the  next day or two. There is never a shortage of people needing accommodation.  I was sad to hear about Penelope. Her health is dire and I am sorry her tenancy has come to an end this way. It’s going to be a new season.

Psalm 95:6-7
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care.

Everything we have comes from Him – we are only passing through and the best is yet to come.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
