A Grey Day

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that dawned cold and drizzly. There was a lot of rain overnight – someone said 31mm and it meant the tanks rose significantly. We needed a few things, so we walked down to Fish Hoek to pick them up. I took this from the top of the Sunny Cove bridge… the navy was out overnight.

We got home from our shopping trip, had breakfast and then I got to work. This week, our managers are out the office visiting clients, so I have been covering for one of them. As a result, I was busy! More than 8 hours later, I called it a day.

And that, literally was the day.

One thing about this blog, is you get the plain events of the day. There are always things going on behind the scenes which I don’t write about. Recently, I sent Courage the link so he could see some of the photos of the house as it was being built. He wrote to me to say my blog was very interesting! I told him it was my life one day at a time, with none of the bad stuff.

Psalm 65:2
You who answer prayer, to You all people will come.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Brother & Sister

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today you and your Mom and Dad headed back to Swellendam but not before a few photos were taken. Stacey and David

And it reminded me of other brother and sister photos that we had taken recently…

Julian and Helga

Michael and Monica.

Monica looks so pale here. Fortunately, she is getting better now. Sibling relationships are those that outlast your relationship with your parents.

Today it rained. First it was overcast with a little drizzle but as the afternoon approached the rain poured down and Mike was gleeful as he heard it filling the tanks. According to the weather forecast, it should rain until tomorrow morning.

We had a quiet day. I read more of the book Remote about St Helena Island and didn’t do too much else.

I was saddened to hear the passing of Mark Pilgrim. I had followed him on Instagram and watched some of his YouTube videos. He was so positive and motivated to live the best life he could. It reminded me that, as I write here every day, it’s not about now – we are only passing through.  This world is not our permanent home and neither do we want it to be. There is so much more ahead. We cling to this life because it is all we know, but one day, one day, we will breath our last and our future is secure in God and His salvation for us through Jesus. We don’t know what our eternal life looks like, but we know it will be a place of love, peace and security. We know there will be no fear there. No pain, no tears, no uncertainty. There will be no evil, no crime, no corruption, no illness. All the things that drive us crazy this side of eternity will be a thing of the past. It will be a great place to spend forever – that I know for sure.  I am so grateful for the hope we have in Jesus Christ and eternal life. There are lots of things here we don’t understand. Pain and suffering, unfairness and injustice, but God will see us to the end. We have that security. One day you will read these words and I will be gone – gone from this world, but so much more alive in the next.

Psalm 64:10

The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in Him;  all the upright in heart will glory in Him!

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Best Rainbow We’ve Ever Seen

Saturday

Dear Elsie

You were here! You were here! You and your parents arrived today and we had a wonderful time together as a family. You and I went shopping and in the afternoon we walked on the mountainside. You did so well. I take it for granted when I’m on the mountain that I have my stick and use that to manage the  uneven path and the rocks and shrubs. But you are so much shorter and you managed so well.

We’ve had a lovely dinner this evening on the balcony before the rain came. There has been thunder and lightening  and more rain is forecast. You enjoyed sitting with David and he showed you a seahorse. You never knew there could be a horse in the sea.

Then as the sun began to set, the most amazing double rainbow appeared in the sky. It is the best rainbow we have every seen. David took some photos, including this one…

Just amazing.

It has been a lovely family day. As we gathered for dinner and held hands in prayer, I was very aware that most likely this is the last weekend we will gather as a family for a long time. With David leaving for China, our family time will look different. That rainbow – God’s double banner of love over us wherever we are in the world.

Just so lovely to see Adrian, Stace and Elsie and to have David home for just a little longer.

Psalm 63:3
Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

No Water Again

Friday

Dear Elsie

This evening at just after 6pm, we found we had no water. The horrible news was that we also had new guests arrive from the UK who really want to shower. It’s been off for almost two hours. We spent some time walking round the neighbourhood looking for the problem. We enjoyed the beautiful evening, but didn’t find the problem.

On getting home, we heard there was a burst water main in Sun Valley, so we decided to drive across there and find what was being done about it. We found no burst water main and encountered no water department so now we just have to sit and wait it out, hoping it will suddenly spring back into life. The one thing about these guests is they spoke about the glowing reviews we have had for the Seaview Apartment. Oh dear. We hope water will come on soon. I think tomorrow, I may invest in a camp shower.

This afternoon I visited friends in Glencairn for tea and walked home. Beautiful views from Glencairn.

What’s interesting is the bushes on the mountainside are all being cut back and have been heaped up in clumps. All the little bumps on the mountainside are piles of brush. As I walked, I could hear the sound of chainsaws hard at work.

A beautiful calm evening, but the lack of water is making it less than satisfactory (I can’t say putting a dampener on things!)

Psalm 62:1
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.

Be still my soul.

The best is still to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx

Mike’s Gecko

Thursday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day I saw a bunch of photos and a couple of videos of you at your swimming lesson. You can jump off the side of the pool and into your swimming teacher’s arms! And you can paddle using the noodle on your own. You are doing so well and we are so proud of you.

Today was the day the wind finally died down after days of it blowing, so we got to go to the beach and do some swimming of our own. The swell was quite big and there was an undercurrent which made my swimming slightly more difficult. It was the kind of day that it would probably be better to keep your head above the water. I still got in 2km and the water was wonderful. Out by the barrel it was warmer and to my surprise I saw a large shoal of fish – bigger than the tiny ones I sometimes see. I didn’t hang around. I didn’t want to be around someone else’s food! Talking of fish, this afternoon I saw something I’ve never seen before. The dark patches in the photo below are fish skimming the surface of the water. Very unusual. I was surprised there were not more birds around.

But the event of the day was Mike making his gecko! He used the “Echo Gecko” from Reunion as a template…

Then he cut it out…

He spent a goodly amount of time making it look like Echo Gecko.

On completion, he took it to the pottery studio to dry out. The pottery teacher loved it and said she wanted him to make her one! Mike is so talented. For me, it’s easier to buy pottery than to make each item. It’s such a lot of work. Next time someone gives you something made of pottery, appreciate that a lot of work has gone into it, that’s for sure!

I worked for 7 hours or so.

David has got his appointment for the Chinese embassy in Johannesburg for next week. The plan is to get that sorted and leave for China at the end of the month. I’m so excited for him.

Psalm 61:2-3
From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

David’s Birthday Gift!

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was Uncle David’s birthday! And he got a long awaited gift. The invitation arrived for his China visa. The next step is to upload everything onto the portal for the Chinese embassy. That will result in an appointment at the Chinese embassy in Johannesburg. He will have to fly to that appointment & hand in his passport for the visa, which will take a week or more to process. He may be able to get someone else to pick it up but once it’s processed, it will be time to book his ticket. It still may take another few weeks, but China looks a whole lot closer than it was yesterday.

He had a few appointments today and had to work, but we got to have afternoon tea with him and went out for dinner. Right now we are all sitting in the lounge watching (excitement) live streamed snooker!

I worked for 9 hours.

My brain was fog at the end of that. A walk was required, so I headed off towards Harbour Bay – our dinner destination. The wind was howling and the sand down in Glencairn gets whipped across the road. Exfoliation 1-0-1. I wasn’t about to subject myself to that so I took a walk through the upper Glencairn parking lot and down to the beach, crossed the railway line and skipped across the dry sand onto the damp. There I was safely behind the sand and right on the seashore. It was lovely.

Mike and David picked me up outside Dixies and off we went.

Grateful.

Psalm 60:4
For those who fear You, You have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Happy Birthday Mike

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today is the day Grandpa turned 72! We are so excited about you coming on Friday, when we will celebrate again.

We had a lovely day together.  Mike does not have big needs. He wanted to lie in bed today and read the newspaper – something we haven’t done in a long time.

By the way, I found the cheapest place in Fish Hoek for croissants. It was 6:30am, so I went to Fresh Stop, Fish Hoek, which is on the Main Rd opposite Shoprite at the petrol station. As I walked in, the owner asked me if I’d like coffee! That was a surprise. I declined, but said it was my husband’s birthday and he wanted the newspaper to read. I picked up three croissants and the paper. The croissants were R4.50 each and the newspaper R12.50 – total cost R26!  I couldn’t believe the croissants were so cheap and they were fresh. Good to know!

Courage led a merry rendition of Happy Birthday!

We went to Chalk and Cheese for breakfast which was great. When we got home, the cottage guests had left, so we went and stripped the beds. I got all the washing done. Ruth came this afternoon and cleaned and the neighbours have moved in for a month. The neighbours rent the house next door and the owner is coming out from Germany for a month.

David bought Mike art classes! He also went online and bought a month of DSTV so the family can watch the cricket.

This afternoon we went across to the Blue Route and bought David a few gifts for tomorrow. With him heading to China in the next few weeks, big gifts are out of the question, but I found him something he may want to use when he gets there.

After we got home, I invited Graham up for a drink. It is his last night in the Seaview Apartment. We hope to have him back again during the course of the year.

And then there’s been dinner at home and a quiet evening.

A good birthday for Mike I think. We are so grateful for good health and lots of energy. I hope when I’m his age (5th November 2036!), I will be in the same state of health.

Psalm 57:5
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

Professional Development!

Monday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day I worked for 8 hours. The day began with Courage and Brian coming into the kitchen for some professional development. Outside the back there is a massive rock (or two) that need to be broken up. It’s been hard work thus far, so this weekend Mike looked up a You Tube video on breaking rocks. A video from Peru showed  how it was done, so Mike wanted them to see it. They were so interested.

Such a good lesson. Mike then went off to buy the required rebar for the job. Once they’ve got everything they need, they can make their attempt.

Last night Julian met Elizabeth which was a poignant moment.

She’s a little yellow today so is under the lights before going home. Such a precious poppet.

After 8 hours of work, we walked to Fish Hoek for a few things. It has been so windy.

This evening we had a lovely visit from David. Tomorrow is Mike’s birthday so we are planning to go out for breakfast.

I felt today has been a day that I trudged through mud, but I got through it. Some days will be like this. You just have to press on.  I am looking forward to some downtime.

Psalm 57:1
Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Welcome to the World, Elizabeth!

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the exciting day your cousin was born! Now, on my side of the family, you have two cousins – Ella and now Elizabeth. The three Es!  Elizabeth Heila was born just after midnight and weighed 3.3kg. All is well and we are grateful. Julian gets a new title of Grandfather. It’s a day to be remembered and celebrated for many years to come!

Proud Dad…

So very cute!

We went to church and then later in the morning, I walked to Fish Hoek to buy chicken. It was blowing gales. The beach was buzzing in the breeze. This time it was the Lifesaving competition.

The flag straining at the flagpole shows just how strong the wind was today and it’s expected to continue through tomorrow.

The sea was rough and conditions difficult but the competition went on. I walked home directly and chilled for the rest of the day.

It is going to be a busy week with two birthdays and 2 lots of guests leaving and others coming. Tuesday is Mike’s birthday. Guests in the cottage move out, the cottage gets rapidly cleaned and the neighbours start moving in as the owners of their home arrive on Wednesday. They move in with cats, Basil and Sybil & dog Badger. Wednesday is David’s birthday. Graham moves out of the Seaview Apartment. It gets cleaned on Thursday & new guests arrive on Friday for a week.  I’m ready!

Psalm 56:3
When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Fish Hoek Sandcastle Building Day

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day there was a sand-castle building competition at Fish Hoek Beach. Ah if you and I had been there together, Els, we would have had a bucket of fun. It was also wonderful speaking to you and see all you have been doing. You are so good at lego and at maths.

This was a walking along the cat walk…

The beach was busy with lots of sand creations…

An octopus…

This was a good one…castle with a moat and underground tunnel…

And a hippo…

A lot of work went into all of them. I’m not sure which one won. It was fun to walk down the beach and look at all of them.

Earlier in the morning, we had the guests who are in the cottage up for coffee. It was interesting speaking to them. They are German and have been coming to Cape Town annually for more than a decade, just to escape the warmth and enjoy the golf. We’ll stay in touch and maybe later this year, they will stay with us again.

Now we have friends coming for dinner.

Psalm 55:16
As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Pottering

Friday

Dear Elsie

Last night we went to our very first pottery class.  It was interesting. I am very unartistic, but Granpa is the opposite. We learned the first thing we had to do was throw the clay to get rid of air bubbles.  Throwing the clay is something akin to anger management. You throw it onto a piece of calico with great force.

Once the air bubbles are largely out, you get to roll it out and create whatever you want. Last night we made numbers for the house and I found a dolphin template, so used that as well.

Mike bought home a chunk of clay planning on making a gecko! We’re thinking of going back next week. Now I know what is expected of me, I may branch out and go as far as actually making something. We left early last night because there was loadshedding and it was hard to see details. We’ll be more prepared next time.

For today, we went swimming early. I did something I’ve never done before but often thought of doing. I got in at Skellies pool and swam to the beach from there. My watch battery died but it did register that little bit. Getting out of Skellies was slightly harder than I thought it would be. It was high tide but there were still some rocks. Once I’d navigated those, swimming over the kelp was a challenge, but I soon got into the open sea and had a good swim to the barrel and then onto the beach.

Swimming always makes me hungry. This was what Mike made for lunch…

The day was glorious and when I spotted dolphins far out in the bay, I took our telescope out to get a closer look.

After 6 hours of work, Mike and I walked to Fish Hoek to get some salad ingredients. We went down steps we’d never been down before. Ballycline steps. We have walked up these but never down.

I’ve done something unusual for tomorrow and invited the cottage guests up for cappuccino at 9am.

Chill time.

Psalm 54:4
Surely God is my help; the Lord is the One who sustains me.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Walk and Work

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I worked and I walked, but not in equal quantities. It was a day that I should have swam, but the wind was blowing a bit and we decided not to go to the beach. I hope you don’t sense some laziness creeping in!

I worked 8 hours and at the end of it, decided a walk was in order. We walked down Echo Steps and up Sunnycove Steps, crossed Highway and up the rest of Sunnycove Steps onto the upper part of Highway. There I looked longingly at the sea – it was a ‘I should have swam’ moment.

Then we walk up to Contour to Mountain Rd.

We walked across the mountain to the other section of Mountain and carried on walking until we were on Berg Rd. We walked up Berg to Peak and all the way along Peak until it ran out. We walked the little bit of mountain to Ranger Rd. That was the turn. We walked home – it was more than an hour and we were hungry at the end of it.

The other thing I did today was ordered from ASAP! which is Pick n Pay’s new delivery App. After a few initial obstacles, I got registered and made my first purchase. There were just a few things and they arrived within an hour. The best thing of all? The delivery guy came up the 85 steps and delivered it to our front door. I will definitely do that again.

With dinner eaten & the blog almost written, we are doing something completely different tonight. We are going to a pottery class. Mike is eager to make things out of clay, so I’m tagging along. The most unartistic of the family, I will follow directions and do as I’m told.

Psalm 53:2
God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

259 Steps

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I went for a ‘milk’ walk. It’s when we wake up in the morning and realise we don’t have milk. Fortunately, that was after the first coffee was made. I set off just after 7am and encountered a holiday maker who had come from a guest house to get something out of his car only to have the guest house door close behind him and he didn’t have the keys. He was stuck outside. An older American with a Texas drawl – no cell phone. No keys. He would have to wait until someone came to rescue him. I phoned the guest house, but when the Google number was wrong, I sent them a message as they are on the street WhatsApp group. When that didn’t go through, I put the next message on the street WhatsApp group and assured him that someone would come to let him in. I left on my walk down to Fish Hoek and about half way there, I saw the message had 2 blue ticks and knew he would be sorted.

Meantime, on my return from buying milk, I decided to walk up the Ravine steps – all the way up from the car park next to the Garden of Remembrance.

I counted all the steps from the car park to the start of Elsie’s Peak Trail and there were 259. This is at the top…

I then walked along Mountain Rd and cut up onto the mountain towards the other half of Mountain Rd. This is looking back…that’s my shadow in the photo. The path in the distance is one of the tracks up Elsie’s Peak.

And this is the view from the path.

On the right you can see the barrier. The other side of that is Mountain Rd – the section that goes to the Shark Spotters. The section of road heading down the mountain is Contour Rd and that’s the way I went home. How blessed we are to live in such a city.

I worked for 6 hours. Midday, we went shopping and now we are ready for dinner.

I finally watched this cute video. If you wonder why I’m happy to climb 259 extra steps apart from the 85 that take me to my front door, it’s because of Jacob’s Ladder, Saint Helena Island. Julian got me onto this quaint video.

I definitely want to do some of those hikes and the challenging Jacob’s Ladder, if it’s open. I can’t believe I’ve booked for Saint Helena Island!

Now, it’s time for dinner.

Psalm 52:8
I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Mike Had Covid

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Unexpected news today – Granpa had Covid!

Last Thursday when we went to our final visit of the Sisonki trial, they did a Covid test on us both and Mike’s test was positive. That was last Thursday and we only got the call today. He’s been fine, although, when we think back, when we were in PE, he felt a bit off colour. He thought it was the burger he had for lunch but maybe it was the lurgy. What an unexpected result.  Hopefully by now he’s negative.

It was a beautiful cool windless morning, but instead of going to the beach, we went for an hour long walk. This took us down Highway onto Hillside, up Ravine Steps, over Highway, up more of Ravine steps, up onto the mountain, along Berg to the shark spotters hut. Here we met the fishermen shoal spotters. I told them I sometimes swim and am always happier when I see their bakkie up on the mountainside because I know they are watching out. They said when they are up there, I can know I am safe! They are looking out for shoals and if they see a shark, they alert the fishermen on the beach. I told them I was once in the sea when they saw two sharks come into the bay & they alerted the fishermen who got all the swimmers out the water. The sharks were ‘only’ bronze whalers – not that scary, but you don’t take a chance. I had the opportunity of thanking them. Then we went home and I worked for 8 hours. In between, Julian returned to Johannesburg and new guests came into the cottage.

After work I planned on walking to Fish Hoek to buy Covid tests so I could test David to see if he was positive. I dropped battery operated lights off at the cottage on the way and had a chat to the guests. That took more time than I had. By the time I was on my way down to Warren’s Pharmacy,  it was gone 5:45pm & they close at 6pm. I had to run as fast as I could. I arrived puffing and panting, red faced and exhausted, but with 4 minutes to spare. I walked home very slowly. And I got to stop and admire a beautiful evening at Fish Hoek beach. Perfect light.

I got home, tested David and it was negative. Very pleased about that. We had dinner, watched some TV and here I am at the end of Tuesday 21st February, having hardly had a down moment since I woke up before 6am this morning. It’s time for me to hit the hay!

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Two Mountain Walks

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I did two mountain walks. I woke early and it rained. It actually poured with rain which is very uncharacteristic for February. By lunchtime, it had cleared, so after I’d done most of my work, I walked to Fish Hoek to pick up a few groceries. On my way back, I went via Daisy Lane which has now been cut right back. No signs of daisies now…

I went home the mountain route and found this little friend grazing…

Further along, there’s this piece of hillside I just love. I walk across other peoples’ plots and one day they may be built upon and not open to the public, so I enjoy the walk while I can.

Home, lunch was had and then I had a little snooze. It was after that the real exercise happened. Julian and I went to walk up the steps to Just Nuisance’s grave.

340 steps but there was also quite a lot of stone pathway in between. It took us about as long as it’s expected for us to take if we get to climb Jacob’s Ladder on Saint Helena Island. Hey, the views from this staircase rivals anywhere in the world.

At the top, there is a memorial to those who lost their lives in WW1

And there is the grave of one of South Africa’s most famous dogs…

Julian reading the plaque…

Views…

We live in a beautiful city – that is for sure.

Psalm 50:1
The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.
