I Did This For 2 Mins

Monday

Today was the day…

It was a holiday in South Africa but not for me. I had a lot of work to do, both with the rentals and with my regular work. Fortunately, Ruth was coming to clean the cottage which she did in time for the new guests to arrive. They have now checked in.

I worked most of the day with some breaks in between to check the cottage and do laundry. I also had a two hour lunch break.

We didn’t go to the beach. It’s blowing gales here right now.

I did get some exercise. When I was going to the gym, planking was regular. I haven’t been to gym for more than a year and I don’t think I’ve done a plank in that time, until this week. I surprised myself. All that swimming must work on my core. Today I did this for 2 minutes…

I don’t think it’s a very good plank, but there it is. I managed to stay horizontal for 2 minutes which surprised me. It also surprises me to see my hair is still not too grey from this angle! I do have grey patches. I also have some sun bleached locks. Anyway, apart from going up and down the stairs several times, that was my exercise for the day. It must be quite a slow day if this was the main event! But it was an achievement.

Now I just need to work on my form.

Today, we saw a beautiful pair of Cape Bulbuls. Here is one of them…

The birds have been very active around the bottle.Β  These crested bulbuls are not as common as pair of black collared ones which frequent the bottle more often.

They provide endless entertainment. Just so long as I’m providing an on-going supply of sugar water, they’ll be there to fight over it.

Dinner is coming next!

Autumn Begins

Sunday

Today was the day…

That was far windier than I thought it would be. I thought today was going to be calm – a brilliant swimming day. Nope! All I can say is the Cape Town Cycle Tour peeps must be really pleased the race was last Sunday and not today. It has blown gales. We officially start autumn today…

The leaves on the oak trees will start turning brown and falling. The days are certainly getting shorter with the sun rising much later and setting earlier. The temperatures are already cooler and I’m half in winter pajamas. And with all of this, what should also be evident are windless days! Not seeing too many of those this week!

Today, we took a drive back to Little Stream for breakfast. Another nice outing, with Mike this time. Last time, he didn’t come.

Afterwards, we drove via Kirstenbosch, to drop off a book, and then came home the scenic route. I did a bit of work, had a video call with Stacey and Elsie,Β  and Julian and I walked. Now, I’m going to heat our supper. Thanks to Freedom Foods who were open today, we have a lovely dinner to look forward to.

It’s going to be a busy start to the week. I work tomorrow, even though it’s Human Rights Day and a holiday in South Africa. Plus we have guests leaving the cottage and more arriving 4 hours later, so Ruth will come in the afternoon to do the clean. That will be super helpful.

A good weekend and a happy, albeit windy week ahead.

And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child.

You are cared for and cared about.

God bless you.

We Woke Late

Saturday

Today was the day…

We woke late. It was such a treat to wake up later than usual. No work today!Β  We had coffee & then walked to Fish Hoek with Julian and had breakfast at Peak cafΓ©. Afterwards, browsing in the second hand shops next door, we found a perfect pair of bedside tables. They will work so well for the Seaview apartment, so we bought them.

This morning when I’d stood on the balcony, I noticed the wind was not as strong as I thought it would be, so Mike and I took our swimming costumes to breakfast. On the way home, we stopped at the beach and had a swim. It was a super low tide. The net was in place and it was lovely to swim to the barrel and back a few times.

We spent most of the rest of the day taking it easy. I did some shopping later. Not much else!

Today Google reminded me of what the build was like two years ago. March 2020

April 2021

March 2022. Courage with the wall he has built!

I’ll have to take one from further down to get a complete comparison. But it is amazing how things can grow in 2 years. I sent the half built photo to each of the guests (in the Little Lookout and the Seaview Apartment) and they were amazed.

I also meant to post this unusual photo on my blog. It’s at sunset with the sun shining on the clouds and the clouds reflecting pink onto the sea. I took it about a week ago.

Ducking & Diving

Friday

Today was the day…

The wind seemed quite gentle and from our home perspective the waves gentle. Ah, good swimming weather, I thought, so Mike and I took off to the beach just after 7:30am. It was full moon so super low tide and still going out.

The sea in the picture looks pretty flat. You can see the barrel and the waves look gentle, but it was not the case. Today’s swim was an exercise in ducking and diving. I swam to the lighthouse and back, but it was between breakers and currents and receding tide and was challenging. The waves come in sets and there’s always one big one, suddenly bearing down on me. As an ocean novice, I’m learning that with some you need to dive under it but with most,Β  ducking is fine. Sometimes if the wave has gained momentum and is about to thunder onto the beach, I would get rear whiplash, with the sheer force of the water wrenching my legs around so I end up facing in a different direction. Quite a rush of blood!Β  It reminds me the danger of the sea is so seldom sharks but the unexpected power of the water. When you look at the photo above, it beggars belief that such conditions came out of such a calm looking sea. But that was my experience. On getting back to the restaurant side, the boat had come to drag out the net, so I swam to the barrel and that experience swimming out to sea and back was far more enjoyable. It was great!

Mike ran 6km today and met me in the water when I had done about 2.4km. We ended up sitting on the bench in the sun lapping up the warmth of the morning sun before going home to work.

Work then down to the cottage to give it a final touch up. One thing that always needs doing. Shower drain.

It’s clean now!

Guests arrived this evening, so all units are occupied this weekend. We are in, Julian is here, so it’s a super full house.

End of the week. It’s been a good one.

Thursday Routine

Thursday

Today was the day…

We got to swim. We had a visitor coming at 10am, so we woke, had coffee, did Bible reading and went straight down to the beach. I hadn’t swum, for what I think was 4 days. It was wonderful being in the sea again, although, despite hardly any wind, the waves were dumpers & the sea was murky. It was not really a swimming day, but a bobbing up and down and swimming round and round for 25 minutes kind of dip. The sea was surprisingly warm and it was very low tide. We were there around 8am and the tide was still receding. It was at its lowest at 9:05. It was gloriously refreshing and I’m so glad we went.

Home, shower, breakfast, work for 25 minutes, then our visitor arrived.

I began work in earnest at about 11:30am and worked through to 5ish.

We walked to the end of the road and then had a delightful dinner on the balcony, during which we watched the moon rise.

When the units have longer staying guests my Thursday routine is to change their linen. I learned this the hard way. We had guests stay for 2 weeks in the cottage and to get round the linen change issue, I left a spare set in the cottage and half way through their stay, alerted them to it.

They didn’t have time to do the change so when the end of the visit arrived and they left, I did have a clean set of linen but the bed sheet was pretty gnarly. I spent a goodly amount of time scrubbing it before putting it through the machine. I have two very nice guests at the moment. One is in the Seaview apartment right now and is staying til the end of the month. Every Thursday since he arrived, he goes out in the evening and I go down swap out his linen, spritz his bathroom & replace his towels. The chap in the Little Lookout is here for 10 days and as today was day 5, I asked if he wanted a linen change. He said yes, so I did the same with him. Tomorrow is bin day, so it also gives me the opportunity to get all their rubbish out and put in fresh bin bags. I’m not born to clean, but I do get a kick out of doing this!

Now blog is done and I’m going to sit in bed and play my word game!

Oh, I’ll leave you with a picture of the moon by NHW member Alexia who said it was a balancing act between binoculars and cell phone.

Worm Moon

Wednesday

Today was the day…

Another long work day. 9 hours + of screen time, so this blog will be short.

The main event ended up being dinner, where we went to one of our favourites..

On the way home, we admired the almost full moon. I googled to find out exactly when the next full moon is due and I read it would be a Worm Moon on Friday 18th March. What is a Worm Moon? Never heard of it, so I googled that too. It’s actually a term used in the northern hemisphere who are bidding winter farewell and hoping for warmer times.

So it can’t be applied to us in the southern hemisphere but it’s a random piece of useless information you can add to your weather small talk!

The moon does look beautiful though. Cell phone camera doesn’t do it justice.

The change of seasons has become apparent these last few days. A week ago we were oohing and aahing over the warm sea water – we haven’t ventured down there since the cold wind began. Perhaps tomorrow!

There Was a Loud Crack

Tuesday

Today was the day…

I worked the whole day… close to 10 hours. The wind was blowing so there was no swim. There was a lot of work to do.

Today something really unexpected happened. I got dressed in the bathroom. I closed the lid of the loo and sat down to put my shoes on. There was a loud crack! I was shocked. I broke the toilet lid.

18 months ago, when I was 10kg heavier, I would have been 10 x more upset. Today I was just shocked! Must have been a weakness in the lid.Β  In all my 57 years, this has never happened before. They don’t make toilet lids like they used to!Β

I see the cat walk will soon be closed…Mike and I will have to change our route.

Let’s hope they keep to the schedule. It closes a week today.

Last night, when I was on the Caracal Facebook page I found the email address of one of the facilitators, so I emailed her about the droppings I posted here the other day. She wrote back and said it looked like that was more like porcupine droppings than caracals. My neighbour was very relieved.

Not much else to say today except Julian arrived for a week. We walked to the end of the road and back.

What Does a Caracal Look Like?

Monday

Today was the day…

We didn’t go for an early swim. There wasn’t too much wind but it was chilly. Also Mondays are busy days for me and the engineer was paying us a visit about Mike’s plan for a retaining walls and foundations for more water tanks. It was a great relief that we didn’t go, because I sent a message to the cottage guests asking what time they were checking out. They had a night flight tonight and I wanted to say goodbye. I expected them to say at 2pm. Instead they said, ‘in ten minutes!’ They were going for some final sightseeing, so I dashed downstairs and said my goodbyes. They hope to return in January. That was the plan, until about 5:45pm, when I got a call from them from the airport. There had been a paperwork problem and they had to cancel their flight. Could they come back to us? Fortunately, the next guests are only due in on Friday. We had already stripped the bed and done the laundry, but that was no problem. We quickly went downstairs, turned the electricity and the fridge back on, made up the bed and put in clean towels etc. I also left the outside light on. I don’t know how long it will be before they make an appearance. Anyway, it’s no problem having them back.

I worked more than 7 hours. Mike and I took a walk to Fish Hoek for a little shopping.

This evening I got carried away looking at Cape caracal photos on the Caracal project Facebook page. This one was sighted this morning on Chapman’s Peak Drive. Amazing.

Photo cred: Oscar Barnes

They say they come across Chappies to hunt rock hyrax (like a dassie) and sea birds.

This one is tagged. His name is Hermes and he is often spotted on the Table Mountain Trails.

Photo cred: Scott Clarkson

These three are wondering around Kirstenbosch. Check the paws!

Photo cred: Kervin Prayag and Susan Miller

Cats to keep a look out for. It’s those ears that are the tell-tale features.

A full Monday.

Cape Town Cycle Race Day

Sunday

Today was the day…

of the Cape Town Cycle Race. That’s what it is now called. The day dawned with decidedly autumnal weather – drizzle and cloud with a northerly breeze – an absolute delight for the race organisers whose biggest fear for their day is a gale force south-easter. None of that today.

The north wind pushed the cyclists to Cape Point & provided a gentle headwind on the journey back to the city. We walked down to Fish Hoek and back enjoying the cycle race vibe.

Vicci posted this photo of the baboon at Fish Hoek circle during the cycle race….

On our return, we had brunch of bacon and eggs.Β  I did a bit of work and then this afternoon, when the race was over, the roads were opened, we drove to Simon’s Town, parked the car and walked 4km to Miller’s Point and 4km back.

As we were walking, suddenly we found ourselves with company.

Miller’s Point troop of baboons. They have no fear of traffic, wandering over the road as if they own the place. Mike & I increased our speed – we didn’t want them too close. We lost them when we go to the Black Marlin turn off. They seemed to stop there, perhaps lured by the smell of food.

Lovely to have a cooler day.Β  I feel rested enough for the new week.

More About the Baboon and Kittens

Saturday

Today was the day…

We did a few things back to front. I slept really badly last night, so was awake way into the small hours of the morning. Eventually, I fell asleep and woke up just before 7am. It was going to be a warm morning, so instead of having coffee, doing my Bible reading and then going to the beach, we went straight to the beach. The water was fantastic – it was easy to swim and there were loads of people.

While there, I got a message from my neighbour saying he didn’t know about the caracals. Look what he said…he’s white, I’m green. I couldn’t believe it! The baboon had come down from his tree, gone up our road and into our neighbour’s house. Our guest saw him too! Fortunately the baboon monitor was on site to shew him on his way and we haven’t seen him since. Talking of the baboon. His name is Rafiki, but someone who didn’t know that, started referring to him as Mr Boon & for a short while it caught on…

But that ended with this…

Oops! Whatsapp group politics!

So that was the baboon antics of the day. The neighbour told me more about the kittens & sent me photos. Their names are Sybil and Basil and they are adorable.

I hope to see a lot more of them. It will be lovely having cats close by.

We had quite a busy day. After the swim, we had breakfast, did my Bible reading and had coffee. Then we went to put the finishing touches to the cottages as guests arrived. After that we went shopping, which took us to Whitehouse, Gelmar and Checkers.Β  Home in time to clean the Little Lookout and then we showered and went to the Beretta’s for dinner.

Home, blog, bed. I’m ready.

The Baboon Came to Town

Friday

Today was the day…

The baboon came to town. Early this morning, we heard it had been at the end of our street by the new build.

And he had been on the mountainside…

Then he sauntered through Fish Hoek and was seen running on 1st Ave behind the Pick n pay centre. The last we heard he was on a tree in a garden on Simon’s Town road. I went for a walk to see…yup…there he was in the tree, enjoying the view, contemplating the meaning of life…

Closer…

He was expected to spend the night in the tree. The monitors were keeping an eye on him. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

It was about a 6+ hour work day.

The weather was really still, so we got a lovely swim in calm water this morning. Then at lunchtime it clouded over and there was a massive clap of thunder that surprised me. There was some lightening, some more thunder, a bit of rain and then it was just cloudy. It’s been a beautiful evening…this kind of evening…this is my view for my blog this evening (although a gust blew the candle out!)

But perhaps the highlight of the day has just happened. We were sitting on the balcony when we heard a couple of rocks falling. We have lots of rocks, so we looked over the side balcony to the steps and there we saw….

KITTENS!!

I rushed down immediately. There was a black and white one which stood still for a minute so I could get a photo…

There was a smaller grey one that had springs in its feet. It bounded up and down the stairs, mewing and greeting and looking excited to see me. Although I got to pick that one up, in no time, it was off. I was ecstatic. I messaged the neighbour to ask if they had got kittens. Before I could reply, I saw the little pair disappear into their back door. I’m so excited. The idea of having cats around makes me happy.Β  I’ve not wanted to get cats because of the caracals but with the dogs next door, perhaps the caracals will stay away. I’m nervous for them though, because the other day I was walking behind our property and came home along the path close to our neighbour’s fence and I saw some droppings there that quite possibly could be caracal’s.Β  This has now sent me off on a trip out back to take a photo of what the internet term’s caracal scat. This is the internet photo…this is form the urban caracal project…fresh caracal scat…

And this is from behind our house…there were two piles…

The project describes it: Wild cat scat has very distinctive characteristics- it should be comprised mostly of hair and bones and it is the largest carnivore scat you will see in Table Mountain. Also, cat scat is very different than dog scat because it has blunt ends that often fall apart to look like a little pile of pellets.

Okay, the kitten story went downhill pretty quickly then!Β  I’m ending and will leave the reader to decide if the two look the same.

Twilight view…

Satisfying Thursday

Thursday

Today was the day..

The wind blew – we didn’t swim and I don’t think the wind will be any gentler tomorrow.

It was a satisfying day because:

  1. I did almost 9 hours of work. It was fast-paced and productive, which made it fulfilling.
  2. I welcomed Melanie to the Little Lookout. A new guest is always enjoyable.
  3. I changed the linen & towels in the Seaview Apartment.

And when that was done, I was sitting down to do this blog, when I suddenly heard a siren very close by. To my surprise a fire engine drove past. That was worrying. With a stiff south-easter, we don’t want a fire south of us. Mike and I went to investigate. It turns out there was a medical emergency. When I got to the house, a group of people were in the swimming pool. A person looked like they had been stretchered out and were being taken into the house, making it look like a possible near-drowning. From the distance I stood, it looked like a little girl, but when the drama had ended & I got to speak to a family member, he said it was a 29 year old man. What exactly happened, I don’t know. Gratefully, it’s not a common occurrence on our street.

Coming home, the light was failing and it was loadshedding, so as we were arriving at our front door, the solar lights of the hand-rails came one. Did you know we have hand rails most of the way up the stairs now?

The lights are a great help when guests arrive home late.

I sense the weekend coming.

Swimming in the Shallow End

Wednesday

Today was the day…

I swam breast-stroke to the lighthouse and back. I’ve never done that before, being a bit of an impatient swimmer. Doing breast-stroke when you can do crawl is like walking whenΒ  you can run. But today the tide was high and there were waves for the body-boarders. It meant that the last breaker was out of depth so swimming between the waves was safe. I swam in the shallow end of the sea, always very close to the ocean floor and as a result I was constantly diving under the breakers. Crawl was pretty much out of the question. I mean I could have, but I would have been constantly dunked. It was best to stay above the pond to keep an eye on each rolling wave, allowing me to gently duck under them.Β  The water was lovely and warm. Probably about 19C.

We came home to shower and have breakfast. About 7 hours of work followed.

Ruth came and cleaned the top floor, the Little Lookout and the cottage, so that was helpful. We blocked the calendar for the Little Lookout for last night and tonight because the bathroom door had got a little bit of an issue. Guests are showering with it open, which is fine, but it has caused a bit of water damage. Yesterday, Courage took the door off (after Greg the amazing guest checked out) and did the repair. Courage also did some painting today. By the end of the day, it was booked again. As soon as the booking came through, I recognised the name. I’ve seen this name on the internet before. She arrives tomorrow for two nights.

It’s been a super late summer’s day. The weather is turning, slowly but surely. The sun is rising later and setting earlier. This was taken on our way home this morning from the Sunny Cove bridge…

Mike and I walked to the end of the road early evening, and encountered the builder who is building one of the houses on the street. His name is Sten. He said there had been some issues with the site, but the owners were very sweet and understanding.Β  He told us how much it had cost for the shell, excluding the electrics, plumbing and finishes : R1.4m for about 140m2. He did say he quoted for piles for foundations, but due to cost constraints they selected pads. We will continue to watch with interest.

And so the 9th March has ended. We enjoyed today.

Big Fat Green Worm

Tuesday

Today was the day…

We found a big fat green worm eating one of our vines. We had noticed one of the vines was not thriving…

Courage took a closer look and found one of these. It’s a vine hawk moth.

I forgot to take a photo, so this one comes from Oz Animals. This thing had chewed through most of the foliage. Fortunately, it hadn’t got to the others. We still have two sticks…

The 3rd stick finally came to life and now looks like this…

While the ones that are flourishing look like this…

There was a little more progress made on the funicular path today. That’s going to be it for the moment. Tomorrow Courage has other work to do…

And all that sand and stone has gone behind the house. Today I took a photo to capture the progress…

This is the beginning of a courtyard, if you can believe that! Time will tell.

I worked almost 8 hours. With the wind, there was no swim and because it was a full day, there has been no exercise at all. Julian left – he’ll be back next week. We are expecting the wind to drop overnight. Tomorrow, God willing, we swim.

On the guest front, Greg left. Such a nice guy. He’s welcome back any time.

Clearing the Funicular Lane

Monday

Today was the day…

More clearing was done on the funicular lane. The plan is to (one day in the next couple of years) have a funicular – a mountainside lift – that will transport us up and down the hillside. It is really so we can age in place. My opinion of these things is to get them done as soon as possible because they only go up in price. When we opened the land up at the top, it was the start of it…this was Feb 8th.

A month later and Courage and Elijah started clearing further down the stairs…

A couple of hours later and good progress had been made

We still have a long way to go. The actual funicular with tracks etc will only be installed after the house behind ours is built, so that will be quite some time. The main reason for doing this right now is because we need to fill behind our current house. There is to be a patio there and we need back fill for it, so this is where we are getting it from. The funicular lane will initially carry a path up to the back plot. When the building there starts going up, builders will use the funicular lane to carry equipment and not our stairs. Our stairs got covered in rubble when our build was going up. We want a division of land when the build behind begins to prevent this…which was 8th September 2020.

We have come a long way!

We did not swim today. Mondays are always busy for me and I like to get on top of everything. I started work early, had done 7 hours by 3pm and then Mike and I walked to the village for milk.

Now we are about to have dinner.
