The Restless Murky Sea

Tuesday

Today was the day…

I stayed at home almost the entire day. The only time I ventured out was to walk to the end of the road and back.  The wind continued to blow stirring up the sea to a milky green with streaks of darker colours. This is from our lounge doors…

And this is from our bedroom window…

It was murky and restless and I’d not want to be in it. Tomorrow the wind is forecast to drop.

Meanwhile, Courage and Brian started with the first two gabion baskets.

Lots more work to be done, but this is how it starts. One small step at a time.

Julian arrived. So did our next guest, but when he leaves on Friday, we have no more bookings for a couple of weeks. We’ll see if that changes.  Tomorrow, our electrician comes to look at the electrics of the cottage which are pretty ancient and need to be redone.  Today I worked 8 hours and paid my tax. Another job done.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

What’s With The Weather!

Monday

Today was the day…

The weather changed and changed again. We woke up to rain and a cloud came over leaving everything damp and gloomy outside.

As the rain fell, it no longer came from the north but the wind turned and we started getting rain from the south-east (black south-easter). This is always good for our windows, which got a free wash.  I sprayed them down with Windolene and then let the rain do most of the work. As the rain stopped, the sun came out but the wind picked up to a very strong south-easter & that has been pumping all day.

And it’s not expected to stop tomorrow either…

Wednesday and Friday won’t be too bad. It looks like rain on Thursday.

Today a funny thing happened. David has hardly sent any photos. He’s been really slow in showing us what he’s been up to. I had a whatsapp exchange with him today.  It went like something like this:

David: “Mom, I can’t pay my tax because I can’t get a one time pin here. Please can you pay it and I’ll transfer money?”

Mom: “Sure, that’s no problem. Send me the details.”

David: “Thanks so much.” (Details come through)

Mom: Goes into banking, does the transfer, prints the proof of payment – sends it to David via Whatsapp.

David: Sends 19 photos!

He’s in Thailand til next Monday and then he’s off to South Korea for three weeks mainly cycling.

This is the top of the volcano he climbed.

Talking of travels, today I paid for the cruise.

And the final thing about 29th August – Gerrie’s birthday! Happy birthday Gerrie!

May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way.

Scullery Makeover

Sunday

Today was the day…

We thought it would be a lovely cloudless day. It really only became warm and sunny in the afternoon. In the morning, when we were at the beach, a massive, gloomy cloud sat threateningly over the sun, obliterating the required warmth after a cold swim. In fact a little shower mercilessly came out of it.

The water was cold, but largely clear. I swam to the barrel and back a couple of times and enjoyed 30 minutes of being wrapped in cold. The air temperature was higher than the water, so it was warmer out than in. There is a sense that spring is coming. Today I watched a sweet robin sitting on top of the cottage roof and calling at the top of its voice. The binoculars helped in identifying it.  It had an orange breast and black over its eyes with a white stripe. With that description, the internet told me it is a Cape Robin-chat and the SANBI photo is accurate.

It’s incessant vocals reminded me our bird bottle was empty. I had taken it down to clean it out. I’d actually prepared the sugar water but not returned it. I did that little task and soon had the neighbourhood avian population started gathering with enthusiasm. The robin is not one of them. I haven’t seen the robin-chats at the bottle at all. Maybe they are not partial to my juice. Common are the little white-eyes as well as sunbirds, sparrows and Cape bulbuls. The long-tailed sugar-birds sometimes also swoop in, freaking everyone out and dominating the drink. Occasionally they will be challenged by a bossy sunbird who may not be deterred and will cheekily peck the sugar-bird’s under-feathers causing a little ruckus. It’s common for more than one breed to be on the feeder at the same time, but usually it’s the smaller birds – sunbirds and white-eyes may be patient enough to share, along with the docile Cape canary.

There were two other major things that happened today:

Firstly, I booked and paid for the ship internet package. This was mainly to see if I could do a ship booking with my international bank card. It worked, with unusual security.

And Mike has redesigned the scullery. It’s become a bit of a messy place with stuff (like spare drinking water for when we have burst water mains) on the floor. Mike wants it behind closed doors so he has designed storage. He’ll sit for hours, deep in thought staring at his design seeing where it can improve or how he will put it together.

I’m really happy with his plans.

It also comes with a desk on wheels that can be used in the space under the stairs. It rolls out for access to the storage boxes behind. When Mike does a diagram like this, you know he is serious about a project. It’s gone beyond the thinking stage to the  ‘about to order the wood’ stage.

Mike is on leave from all the outside work at the moment. Courage is working on the plot behind, ordering supplies and coordinating his helper. He seems to be doing well and enjoying it. He comes to Mike for advice or clarification every now and again.

The bookings have picked up. The Seaview Apartment is booked for most of October.

My sweet memory of Elsie is from our feet in the sand when they were here last.

Saturday Walk

Saturday

Today was the day…

Mike slept in and I went for about an 8km walk to Harbour Bay and back. I walked across Glencairn beach which was very pleasant. The (Elsie’s)  river is flowing steadily, so I needed to clamber under the railway bridge and across some stepping stones to get to the other side.

The train came past…

On the way back from Harbour Bay I went via the Glencairn community market and found the wetlands path goes from the old Glencairn side to Blackhill. I’ll definitely be exploring that a bit more in the future.

I laboured up Echo Steps and got home hot and tired. After a little rest, we video called Elsie and Stacey. Elsie was busy painting a printed out picture of a striped ball. She did such a good job.

Google reminded me of this photo from 2 years ago. Mike designed the front parapet of the house to resemble a whale, but when it got assembled, they didn’t quite get it right!  This is the view from the roof before the solar panels went on. It’s a view we seldom get to enjoy.

Another photo of 2 years ago…plastering the back of the house!

Now you can see how far we’ve come. The long window at the end of the photo above is the window opposite the stairs in the photo below. The door on the far left of the photo below is the door just visible above the nearer window in the photo above.

Such a lot of back fill and stone walls Courage has made.  One step at a time.

Quiet evening with rare take-aways for dinner. Mike has gone to pick them up.

Rainbows and Sunsets

Friday!

Today was the day…

We woke up to a little drizzle. When I walked out the front door, I was met with this majestic sight over the mountain…

Last night, I’d already posted the blog, when Mike and I decided to go and watch the sun set at Noordhoek. We had never done that before. It was a treat. Quite idyllic and so close to home. Worth the little drive.

Today we had a quick turn-around of guests. We had a guest, Ross, staying in the Seaview Apartment who said he may stay for the weekend and he would let me know yesterday, which he didn’t. His stay was Wed/Thurs night and the weekend was free, but then last night at 10pm, I had a booking for tonight and tomorrow. This morning, before I had a chance to message Ross who was due to check out, he sent me a voice note saying he got an early flight and was on his way to the airport. He had already left, which was super convenient. Mike and I zipped downstairs and did the clean. By the time 8:30am arrived, the apartment was ready for today’s guests.

I worked 6 hours today but also managed tea with my friends. Mike dropped me off at Harbour Bay and went to do some shopping. He was due to pick me up at just after 11am, so I left HB and started walking home. He fished me off the street outside Dixies. Twas a treat to get a little walk in.

Meantime, Courage spent the day working with Brian. Together they are busy preparing the land for the gabion baskets. This involves a massive ditch being dug.

This work is going on the left of the telephone pole. The have cleared a lot – it’s back-breaking tiring work.

This evening, we walked down to the beach. I took a photo of Fish Hoek Mountain, so now you can see the tower before it blew down…

And now…

No tiny little stick!

Weekend is here. Hope to get some hiking done tomorrow.

Elsie’s Peak Tower Blew Over

Thursday

Today was the day…

There was a massive storm last night with very high winds. We woke to the news that Elsie’s Peak Tower blew over…this is before, on a sunny day…

On a walk a few months ago…

This morning…it’s gone.

And this is a guy called Eras Gous posted to Fish Hoek FB group…

The winds were very strong and we heard furniture moving around on the balconies last night. This morning we found large pots had lost their plants and blown down our stairs. The lid had been blown off the Weber braai and the wind had lifted some of our artificial grass. It must have been very strong to bring down the tower. I don’t think it will be restored. It’s an old radio tower from a couple of decades ago…or so I read.

Meanwhile, back at home, Mike & Courage designed a gabion basket.

…and to make it easier to visualize, he made a paper 3-D version..

….which Courage made into reality…

One down, 14 to go!

Believe it or not, it would cost about R2500 to buy one of these ready made.  To buy the material and skill Courage, apart from his labour, it costs R300.

End of the work day and tomorrow I think will be quieter.

KLM Flight Changed

Wednesday

Today was the day…

I got a KLM flight changed. The best made plans can go awry and ours did. We had booked Cape Town to Milan via Amsterdam for us and Johannesburg to Milan via Amsterdam for Julian. We would meet up in Amsterdam and then get on the same flight to Milan. Sorted & paid. Then KLM changed our flight from Cape Town to half an hour later and we couldn’t make our connecting flight. This left Julian on a flight to one airport in Milan and us on another flight to a different airport in Milan. It was suddenly all very messy.  I tried changing it online, but they said I had to phone. I procrastinated and then today called to see what I was in for. After hanging on the line in a holding pattern for 6 minutes, I hung up. A little later I again took the plunge, phoning from my cell phone so the line would be better and put it on speaker phone so I could work while waiting. 21 minutes later, the job was complete. Julian’s flight from Amsterdam to Milan was changed and now we are all on the same flight again.  Big tick. Let’s hope KLM doesn’t make any more schedule changes.

The other thing that happened today is they fixed the manhole. The other day we were out walking and discovered a manhole cover had fallen in, making it hazardous.

I reported it on the street whatsapp group. Felicity Purchase reported it to Council and today this was there…

At least a temporary fix.

I walked to Fish Hoek to pick up my favourite tea -it used to be Rooibos ginger, but now it’s Rooibos Chamomile & I had run out. On the way back I sat on one of my favourite benches. It’s on what I call Daisy Lane…

And it has this view…

Lovely place to sit for a few quiet moments.

6 hours of work and now time for a quiet evening.

We Swam

Tuesday

Today was the day…

We swam! It was the first time we got into the cold winter sea during August 2022. Last year we were far more gung-ho. I found about 4 photos from August last year.

The water was cold. I thought 12C but I always think it’s colder than it is. It was a little on the murky side and the waves resembled at times, dumpers! I swam for 20 minutes and then got out. It’s always invigorating afterwards. I’ve just checked what my watch said. It said the temperature was 11C!!

Came home and enjoyed warming up in my rocking chair where the sun streams in.

I worked for about 5 or 6 hours. Mike and I enjoyed the rest of what is a stunning windless, sunny day. Winter days don’t get better than this and we certainly didn’t regret going for a swim.

On the family front. Julian returned to Johannesburg. David slept well with no earthquake worries and this morning when he woke up he had pretty much recovered from his endurance hike. Elsie had her first pre-school outing to the Library.

I took my car back to the old house and walked most of the way home. Mike came to meet me and  found me on Ranger Rd.

While I was walking, I was drumming this into my head – such familiar words but to get them perfect is a different story.

David’s Most Memorable Day

Monday

Today was the day…

David summited the highest mountain in Bali.

Notice it is a volcano and there was steam coming out of it and ash all the way up it. David described the trip down as perilous. He fell once, scraping his arm, but got down without further incident. One of the problems though is that he was picked up at 9pm and they drove for 2 hours before starting the climb at 11pm. They summited at sunrise.

They rested for 45 minutes or so and then began the dreadful descent, exhausted from the uphill journey, sleep deprived, hungry and not hydrated enough. By the time he got back, he was physically finished. He had an hour English class to take on his return, so rushed into his room and immediately had a shower to wash off the dirt and the ash.

And that was when the REAL drama began.  While in the shower, he started hearing what sounded like banging on his door. He waited and then it was really hard banging. What the heck. He opened the shower and saw the door moving on its own.

Fortunately, it didn’t cause the ceiling to fall in, but it rattled him for sure! What an experience. He had a super adrenaline rush that geared him up for his English class.

We had a video call with him after that and he filled in all the details of the massive hike up the mountain and the drama of the earthquake. David’s most memorable day. We are grateful for his safety.

For me, I worked 8 hours, did the washing and am about to go for a walk.

Whale off Fish Hoek

Sunday

Today was the day…

We had a leisurely morning, which started off at Blue Water cafe for breakfast. It was a good one. We have been going to Blue Water cafe for  more than a decade. They are at Imhoff Farm and with the ups and downs of the last few years, I’m glad they have survived. The food is good and plentiful & the view is beautiful. This photo I took in February 2012. Not much has changed except the massive ‘Faraway Tree’ has had to be cut back to it’s trunk.

From breakfast we came home and had a quiet Sunday, punctuated by a video chat with Stacey. In the afternoon, the guest checked out at 4pm and the next ones are just about to arrive. Mike & I were waiting with our supplies as the 4pm guest left and we jumped into action. It took us 1 hour to pull the place back into shape.

Right afterwards, I noticed the whale watching boat off Fish Hoek. If the boat is off Fish Hoek, it means a whale is off Fish Hoek.  One day we’ll be on the boat. Today was a potential day but needing to clean the Seaview Apartment and see guest in meant we had to forgo the opportunity. It was the ideal day as the boat went right past our house, so did the whale they were following! Mike got some great photos through the telescope. It looks like a Southern Right me.

I’m hoping in a couple of weeks we can try get on the boat and hopefully a whale will obligingly be in Fish Hoek again. I sent the photos to the boat company for fun! They enjoyed that.

So it’s been a satisfying day and I’m ready to jump into my email tomorrow morning.

New Binoculars

Saturday

Today was the day…

I bought a new pair of binoculars. These are a very generous early birthday present from Mike.

I’m so excited. They are fabulous.

For the rest of the day, we have been trying to get on a whale watching trip across False Bay but it keeps getting cancelled. It was due to be this afternoon, but the weather wasn’t good enough so we’ll wait for a better time.

In its place, we took Julian to Alphen Trail and did the shorter walk enjoying the beauty of it.

We came home via the Alphen Hotel where we enjoyed afternoon tea.

On our way home, I got a call from a neighbour a little up our road who invited us for last minute cheese and wine at her house to meet a few of her neighbours. I think what happened was she invited others who couldn’t come, had too much food and needed some extra bods, so we got the call.  We got all the news from the plots and purchases of property that side of the street and it was interesting to say the least. It’s always good to keep in touch with the people in the neighbourhood.

Home and now I’m ready for bed.

Nice Early Blog

Friday

Today was the day…

I was planning on taking the day off because I knew that yesterday’s vaccine may cause some headache and fatigue. While I did feel a little woozy for part of this morning and I have a very stiff left arm, ultimately, this afternoon I’m pretty much back to normal. Mike has hardly had any symptoms. I worked the morning and am now writing a nice early blog, so I can chill the rest of the afternoon and evening. We may even take a little walk.

The day began overcast with the sea flat. It was perfect weather for the rowers to get some rowing done…

I heard from both David and Stacey today with different stories as to their day’s activities. David, being 6 hours ahead of us was winding down. He had been to this place… It is an Indonesian Island – Nusa Penida.

He enjoyed exploring, but had to scramble to get to the ferry and back to Bali to meet his teaching responsibilities. With a week left in Bali, he has plans to climb the highest mountain in Bali and also to go canyoning. No doubt, he will find both adventures challenging but fun. He’s looking like he’s lost some weight. While in Bali, he has joined a gym to get cycling fit for his bike journey through South Korea.

Meanwhile Stacey discovered the online option for car licensing and has renewed her car virtually. The deal is the car license disc will be couriered to her. I’m excited she will be our guinea pig to see if this works. Talking of which, Mike is our resident pensioner and he gets queue benefits at the FH licensing department. He went there this morning to get my old Atos transferred out of my  name & into Julian’s as, after David bought it from me, it was left in my name. Then Julian bought it from David, so it’s time to go from a CA number plate to a Gauteng one. We will miss the number plate CA84888! While Mike was there he renewed my car’s licence.

Next up: pick up  my new reading glasses & biscuits from Aunty Ivy. So that was a profitable day.

Extra Protection

Thursday

Today was the day…

It POURED with rain and we spent three hours at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation in a slow moving queue for extra Covid protection. With us heading to Italy in 3 months time (DV), and then coming back on the ship, we thought it best to booster on up. When the Sisonki Trial people phoned us the other week saying we could be part of their next Moderna trial, we contacted them this morning and trotted off to get the shot.

I worked before and after and enjoyed chicken soup for lunch. The day was cold and drizzly and still is. It’s wonderful to have the rain.  So much rain there has been, the tanks are about 2/3 full!

The access coming up to our level once was a complete mess…this was July 2020, a few months before we moved in.

This is today! All those rocks…hundreds and hundreds of rocks have been re-purposed into Courage-built walls.

I asked Courage to etch his name into one of the columns.

God willing, one day, there will be a funicular running down the left side of the stairs. That will be a photo to take!

After no guests for a while, tomorrow we finally have someone coming. A writer! He needs a weekend to be still and get some serious writing done.

Tanks a Quarter Full

Wednesday

Today was the day…

We had enough rain to fill the tanks to a quarter. Mike was a happy man!

The other day, I forgot to mention, we trotted off to Valley Timbers and picked up a couple of sheets of lattice. We loaded them up on the roof rack and bought them home for Courage to install on Monday. They conceal the tanks nicely.

We have an ivy plant just waiting to grow up over them and it will do a good job in providing a green cover.

This is what the back looked like in June…

And in May 2022…

And March 2022

Mike and David in the back foundation trench…

Before the house was built. We didn’t know there would be tanks at about Mike’s waist level. How far we have come. How to eat an elephant: one bite at a time. It was a mammoth task!  Maybe tomorrow, I’ll post some photos of the steps to remind us of our access journey!

I had a solid day’s work and attended to a few other chores like getting a bank account FICA’d without leaving my office.

We have just got back from a walk which we managed to complete between showers. Now it’s dinner time.

A Break in Routine

Tuesday

Today was the day…

I broke from routine and left home just before 8am to drive to Claremont.  I had an appointment for my new tooth to be fitted. The traffic was crazy. My Garmin led me off the M3 and up Wynberg Hill, finally along Main Rd Claremont before telling me to turn right down to the taxi rank. Completely out of my range of familiarity I blindly obeyed and found myself on a broad and empty boulevard going round the back of the building I was due to visit. I soon found a familiar set of traffic lights and was relieved to get there with a few minutes to spare. It had taken me best part of an hour to get from Fish Hoek to Claremont.

The outcome – the crown is still the wrong colour. He put the temporary one back and I have to return in 2 weeks.

The view from outside the dentist building. A view to stop and admire.

From there I went to the Southern Sun hotel next door and spent the morning working. Julian flew in from Johannesburg and caught an Uber to the hotel and then came home with me.

I worked this afternoon and then went for a short walk to the end of the road. End of Echo view…

Storm clouds are gathering and it’s chilly.

Tomorrow, we should have rain.

There are a couple of things, I have forgotten to write about. The first pertains to my mud  mishap. That happened on Saturday. I felt fine and completely uninjured but on Sunday I woke up with sore muscles down the inside of both my arms. When I slipped I fell forward and both my forearms hit the ground with a rough thud. They are better today.

The other thing I meant to mention yesterday was I saw a shooting star! I was up early and standing at my bedroom windows, when I suddenly saw something shooting across the sky. It was not very high up in the sky. It was dark and all I could see was a small light moving at speed. At first I wondered if it was some sort of helicopter but it was going too fast & there was no noise. I thought it could have been a flare but it was too small. It wasn’t falling – it literally was shooting horizontally. I watched it cross the length of my windows and then in a split second the light was gone.  Memorable.

Blessed be the Lord! Day after day He bears our burdens; God is our salvation.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

God bless you.
