Cats Visit the Vet

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today I took the cats to the vet. We got them 7 weeks ago today and there is no doubt that trust has built up between us. The other evening, after dark, I went to find Raiku. As I went down the stairs, he started running further down until eventually he hid close to the upper cottage entrance. I went down to the patio and then came back up looking for him. In the darkness I spotted him and was able to pick him up. He’s the struggler of the two. He prefers not to be picked up, yet he not only allowed me to pick him up but he relaxed in my arms while I lugged him up the stairs. Free ride – he knows when to take advantage.

Today before leaving for the vet, they didn’t have a clue what was coming. With it cold and wet outside, they were all cosy on the chair under the table.

Getting them from their comfy spot into the cat box was initially okay until the door of the box broke and Claw’d escaped. I managed to get them both in while we struggled to fix the door, but then they both got out. It was through this incident that I really understood their trust of us. They didn’t run under the bed or go hide. They gapped it but only into the lounge to sit on the carpet and look at us suspiciously. Eventually, we managed to fix the door, get them both in and Mike carried the box down the stairs and put it in the car. I took them to the vet on my own & the entire visit went off without a hitch. I took them out of the box one at a time, starting with Claw’d. After he was done, I opened the box and Raiku gingerly crept out. Claw’d was then very happy to retreat back into the safety of the box. Raiku’s appointment was quickly over & he too was happy to rejoin Claw’d. Paid the bill and within an hour of starting the whole thing, we were home and they were happy. Here they are looking at David…

Well done boys! They have to go back in a month for their follow-up rabies jab.

Today, a friend shared a photo that St Helena Tourism Facebook page had posted of Jacob’s Ladder. Such a good one.

Here’s the write up…

Julian and I climbed it on the day it reopened after being closed for months for renovations. Because we were concerned they would close it again, we did this massive feat at midday on a very warm St. Helena Day. It was really hard work. If you look at the stairs, there is a wall that bisects it and you think, when you get to that point, you are half way. However, another bunch of steps further up, you encounter the half way sign.

That was a disappointing surprise as we thought we were further than we were. View from more than half way….

A good memory.

Last day of the month. Tomorrow September! Spring is coming.

Blue Moon

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Tonight there is a blue moon! We got to see it for a few minutes before the clouds rolled in ahead of the cold front.

But what we did get to look at was the morning sun. Before it got too bright it was covered by a thick layer of haze making it possible to look at it.

It was quite remarkable and something I’d never seen before.

The day cooled and tomorrow we are expecting rain in the afternoon and a maximum temperature of only 13! Also, tomorrow I take the cats to the vet, so I’ll be pleased to get that done before the rain sets in.

This afternoon the building inspector, Quentin, came to take a look at the drainage pipes the plumber has put in. He called for a level and said our levels were wrong. And he said some pipes should be vertical and not at 45 degree angle.

The plumber is coming on Friday to take a look and when he comes to fix  the problem, he will meet the building inspector (who he knows) to discuss the issues. Quentin gave us a lecture on drainage. Afterwards, we talked about what was needed for us to get our permanent occupation certificate. We have to put some changes through Council and once those changes are in, he will start the process. We learned that if you just ignore the Council requirements and don’t submit your paperwork for the OC, you’ll end up getting a massive fine. He’s very reasonable and gave us some good advice.

End of Wednesday & the penultimate day of August. One day closer to David getting better.

Monty Wins the Day

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today something crazy happened with the cats. Yesterday I ran out of their regular wet cat food, so I went and bought one tin of Pamper. They tucked in with great enthusiasm, but later, Raiku did not feel well and had an upset tummy and threw up. I didn’t know if he had eaten a bug or if it was the change of food. This morning, I gave them another third of the Pamper tin and to my surprise they wouldn’t eat it. Granted, Claw’d licked a bit of the gravy, but Raiku wouldn’t go near it! They had a bit of dry food but that was it. Today, their regular food arrived via Take-a-lot. 24 tins of Monty and Me. I opened the tin at lunchtime and they immediately came meowing to the kitchen. They got stuck in right away. Monty to the rescue!

Cats were happy.

Now I’ve ordered their dry food again. Best to stick with their original eating plan.  This was them after they had been fed Pamper. They were unhappy so got on their feeder’s lap in case things changed.

Today was a sizzler in Cape Town. Temperature rose to the late 20s and the sun shone brightly and warmly. The sunrise was amazing. Hazy and very still.

This afternoon the building inspector was due to arrive at 2pm. By 3pm, he hadn’t arrived. Their had been an accident on Ou Kaapse Weg and so we knew traffic was hectic. If he got stuck on OKW in a spot where there is no reception, it may happen that he is more than an hour late. So we wait.

But at least the blog got done.

The other notable thing about 29th August is that it is Gerrie’s birthday. This is my nephew, Julian’s son-in-law and right-hand man. Happy birthday Gerrie!

The Big Book Removal

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that tons and tons of books were moved out of Julian’s storage and onto a massive truck. Three years worth of book buying amounts to this.

The garage was packed full of them ready for loading.

Job got done.

It should arrive in Johannesburg on Wednesday and weather looks favourable all the way. Hoping for the best.

Today in Cape Town,  spring certainly made an appearance with the temperature rising into the early 20s and not too much wind to speak of.

I’ve made an appointment for the cats to see the vet on Thursday for their vaccines, so that will be a fun outing!

On the beach the other day, we saw a small dog doing battle with a massive piece of seaweed. He had got it from the sea and was pulling & pulling with all the strength he could muster. Eventually, it started to break and he couldn’t get a tight enough grip to get it going again. Where he intended to take it or what he planned with it is any one’s guess, but it was fun to watch as it was so much bigger than him. He was determined!

We need to push on with the big chunks of seaweed in our lives. Today David is exhausted. The neighbours across the street had a noisy high pressure spray machine going as they cleaned their driveway. The noise was so interruptive. Hopefully, they are done. Tomorrow is another day.

You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Walking the Simon’s Town Tracks

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we had some time together on video while we cleaned the Seaview Apartment. Guests left at 12noon. At the same time, I received a request from the guest who was due to arrive tomorrow, to ask if he could arrive today. Mike & I sprang into action, taking an hour and a half to bring it up to shape. The guest arrived at 2.30pm.

Later this afternoon, Julian and I walked from Harbour Bay to Simon’s Town Station and back, but we walked the Simon’s Town railway tracks. For some months now the trains have not been running between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town, so it’s safe walking on the tracks. We parked at Harbour Bay and headed off towards the lines.

We walked along the path which then took us up against the fence below a naval battery.

We soon got down to the rail lines again and walked all the way along to the beach.

When we got to the start of the railway wall, we hopped onto the beach.

I haven’t been on this beach for years. It’s actually called Long Beach.

In front of Simon’s Town station.

And from the car park there is this view of the yachts and navy vessels.

From there we went back up to Simon’s Town road and walked back to Harbour Bay. I had put my cell phone in my left pocket and as I pulled it out, out came a bunch of R100 notes that fell to the ground and then started to blow away in the wind. Julian jumped on one. I jumped on another. There were a few female naval cadets off duty walking on the road and one of them stomped on a third. Fortunately, all were recovered! We soon got back to the mall where we did a little shopping before heading home. Mike has just made spaghetti bolognaise and we are about to eat.

A good Sunday.

China doesn’t matter any more

Saturday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day that David had to be in China before his visa expired. He is here, in Cape Town, moving forward as much as best as he can. Keeping his sense of humour. Showing resilience. Trusting the Lord.

But it’s not easy. Today, Ingrid posted this on Facebook.

My prayer is not that David gets to China. My prayer is for David to be completely well again. He is half well and for that we are so grateful. He can get up in the morning. He can entirely look after himself. He can cook for himself and does not need help in managing his life. He could be so much worse. As the dream of China slips away, there is one thing he has said a number of times: ‘China doesn’t matter any more. What does matter is my health. I need to get well.’  Perhaps once he is better, China could become a dream again, but for today, China doesn’t matter any more.

There is greater gratitude, when you look at what you have and not what you don’t have. That helps the pain turn to peace today. David is half well. He is not completely sick.  As I sat in my rocking chair this morning, this Bible verse came to mind.

Romans 5:3-5
We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

We don’t walk this journey alone. Far from it. We have God’s great Comforter who is our constant Companion if we choose to acknowledge it. He fills us with the peace that passes understanding. We don’t have to wait for the pain to pass before the peace comes. Supernatural peace trumps the peace the world may offer. Even in our greatest success, our most abundant joy, our least pain and with no suffering, let the peace that God offers be the peace that floods our soul. That peace is the lasting peace. It’s deep, solid peace – far from the fragile, fleeting occasional peace that we have on earth.

Grateful for today.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

We Journeyed Home

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we came home, but we took the long route. This meant going via Betty’s Bay which is where we honeymooned 37 years ago. The place has grown up, but the road on which we stayed is still a dirt road. There was no electricity in those days. The place had gas. This is the house from the beach…

Since then it has been built on, but I forgot to take a photo today. So after Betty’s Bay we headed home but on the N2 there was a sudden downpour of rain and we missed the Baden Powell turn off! That became messy because the next two off-ramps you want to avoid. Eventually, we took the 3rd and went through Mitchell’s Plain, onto Spine and then onto Baden Powell. I don’t like going odd & unfamiliar routes in unsettled Cape Town suburbs. While all this was happening, a booking came through for the Seaview Apartment for today! So amidst the rain and the Garmin lady giving directions, I was confirming a reservation for a couple who would arrive at 4pm.

We got home later than expected and within half an hour we had an appointment on the hillside with the building inspector and engineer.

Everything is fine except he wants to see the plumbing joins and double check the plumber’s work. This means we have to dig those open and he will visit on Tuesday. Quentin got on very well with Mike especially when he saw Mike’s theodolite. He stayed way after Paul left and we picked his brain regarding the build and expectations. He’s coming again on Tuesday.

Dinner is done. Some TV is watched. The rain is falling. My electric blanket is on. I’m going to shower.

Psalm 145:14
The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Making Memories

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you and I had tea! I wonder if you will remember this day. When you are older and reading this, let me know if you do. We came through for a few hours  and had a grand time playing in the back garden. You ran and ran and ran (and wore me out). We played ring-a-ring of rosies and you showed me how you rolled down the bank. I showed you how you could climb the tree!

Inside, we watched as you very quickly and smartly put together a tetris kind of block building game. We really enjoyed spending the afternoon with you.

Apart from those memories we made today, last night Mike and I went into the art photo booth and had “Rembrandt” sketch us. I will try to dig out one we did about 14 years ago. This was last nights.

We are now back in Caledon and soon will head for the some more soaking in the water. Last night we spent some time in a few different pools. I also swam 10 lengths and then gingerly got into the cold pool. That was a bone popping experience, but really did my shoulder good.  Tomorrow we go home. And we look forward to it. This is the photo David sent this morning…

To Cape Agulhas We Went

Wednesday 23/8/23

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we went to Cape Agulhas. What’s really exciting is tomorrow we get to see YOU!

Last night it poured with rain and we got caught in it while we were in the hot springs. It was cold and windy but the water was hot and I enjoyed swimming a few laps in the hot water. We did the same this evening but the cold front has passed and it’s not so windy now. Last night I had an idea of driving to Cape Agulhas today. After all, there are these signs posted along the N2 and we never have the time to make the trip. Today we did.

The road to Cape Agulhas from Caledon goes through Napier and Bredasdorp. As far as Bredasdorp it is fantastic – really good condition, well kept and no potholes. Farmlands as far as the eye can see.

Entering Napier…

Between Bredasdorp and Agulhas the landscape becomes more scrubby. The road is a little less kept although there are not potholes. There’s mainly no road refuge for cyclists or pedestrians. The tar has worn away at the edge. Arriving in Agulhas, there has been a lot of development.

We walked the picturesque boardwalk to the most southern tip of Africa.

Fortunately, there were lots of people around to take photos.

From there it was off to the lighthouse, built in 1848 – not the oldest lighthouse in South Africa. That honour belongs to the Green Point lighthouse!

We had to climb to the observation deck. Three ladders took us up there, making up 71 steps. Mike starting up.

View from the deck.

And then down we went…

The viewing deck from below…

We learned Agulhas means ‘needles’ in Portuguese. The reason the Portuguese explorers gave it this name is because when they laid a compass down on their map, the needle corresponded with true north and not magnetic north (thanks Mike!) Altogether a memorable day and well worth the drive.

I managed to get a couple of hours work done this afternoon and then we had our hot spring swim. Next it’s a very late dinner.

Psalm 145:10
All your works praise you, Lord; your faithful people extol you.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Mini Holiday

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we drove towards where you live, but stopped about an hour away and we’ll be here for a few days. The weather today was cold and wet and in Caledon it is very windy. The journey was uneventful. The canola is beginning to bloom and the countryside looks beautiful. I love road-tripping.

View from our room. It’s a very windy day here and rain is expected over the next half hour or so.

The wind is cold, but the water is warm!

This is just what we need. I can do a little work but at the same time get a lot of rest.

R&R.

Rain and Wind

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that the wind blew and it rained. Meanwhile, guests left and the pile of washing grew, so we did 3 loads, which put a mighty strain on our washing line facilities and my patience. Fortunately, one load was in the cottage and there is a line in the laundry so that was that. The other loads were put out on the balcony. I selected a spot outside my study which was a little more protected from the a fresh north wind which blew in a number of squalls. This had me scurrying outside to move the washing inside before the rain blew over them. Once passed, out it went again. Eventually, I used the tumble drier which cork-screwed a corner of a sheet into a long thin twisted knot that resembled a rope. That is now hanging on the indoor line. Most of it is now dry. The reason for the rush is because tomorrow we are going away for a few nights. David will take care of the cats and Courage will take care of everything else.

Claw’d has come to keep me company. While Raiku may be the hunter, Claw’d is the acrobat. He has the ability to twist and cork-screw, flip and fly. Hungry, he will almost walk on his hind legs while the food is being carried. For now, he’s just chilling & I’m (finally) going grey! 😅

And with that, David has come down for dinner, so let me go.

Dinner is done, tea is drunk and now it’s time to wind down for the night.

Psalm 145:8
The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The Alarm Went Off

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I didn’t get dressed. I stayed in my pajamas the entire day. Shortly, I will go and shower and then get back into clean pajamas and climb into bed. A storm is brewing.

Last night we went to Peter and Riana for dinner. When we got back the guests in the cottage were packing up after braaiing. All was well. They just said they were really tired. It wasn’t particularly late – close to 8pm. I went home and popped in to see David. It was then that a very loud house alarm started going off. It wasn’t one of the regular ones and I was curious as to who it belonged to. I went out on the balcony to try to distinguish where it was coming from. I couldn’t decide. Eventually, as it was still blaring and about 10 minutes had passed, I went down to the road to investigate. To my astonishment, it was our cottage alarm that was blaring! It has not gone off since pre-Covid. I phoned the guests. The wife answered the phone (I was right outside the door) and tried to trouble shoot over the phone. With no success, she let me in I tried turning it off at the key pad. That didn’t work. I opened the one cupboard thinking I could pull a plug, but that didn’t have what I needed, so eventually, I crawled on the floor by a bank of plugs and turned off the main switch. Relief! The blaring stopped. I turned it back on again and then pulled out the plug that wasn’t the bedside light. I was so shocked. The guest was very forgiving. I left and (somewhat shattered) went back upstairs. I can’t believe the alarm is still working. I’m so glad it didn’t decide to go off at 2 in the morning. That would have been so bad. At least when the guests leave tomorrow, I can send Mike in there to sort it out.

Last night I hopped into bed and Claw’d and Raiku joined me. Claw’d is the “cleaner” of the two cats & he manages feline personal hygiene.

Raiku just lies there and enjoys the spa.

I’ve had a very restful weekend, despite doing some work and I’m now ready for that hot shower & clean pajamas!

They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works

The Sunniest of August Days

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you and I spent quite some time hanging out on video chat. You took me to your bedroom and showed me your tent and all your ‘friends’ (toys) who were sleeping in the tent. Woofie, meanwhile, had not been listening so he was put ‘under the steps’ – yup…that’s what needs to happen to Woofie when he’s disobedient. Then you wanted to see the cats. Only Claw’d was nearby so you watched him chasing the laser light and playing with his turtle. We had good time and I am so looking forward to seeing you soon!

Afterwards, Mike & I walked to the shops and back. It was the sunniest of August days and we got home toasty.

Meanwhile this afternoon David is commentating chess. He’s good at it but it wears him out. He taught a little less this morning, so has a little more energy this afternoon. If you see this in time, you can look him up on YouTube under Bronze Serpent.

He looks so normal doing this – it’s hard to believe his health is so compromised. It won’t be forever.

Google reminded me of 3 years ago when this was our front door entrance. Our doorstep was under construction.

We sure have come a long way since then.

And things keep on developing.

The wind picked up this afternoon and now it’s turned to be blowing from the north. I think we are expecting some cooler days ahead. We are excited to be going away for a few days this week.

The Wall is Getting Bigger

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the guests left and we prepared for more to arrive tomorrow. However, they are going into the cottage, leaving the Seaview Apartment available.

I worked for several hours. This afternoon, I went up to see how the wall is coming along. It looks like great progress is being made. This is a foundation wall that will largely be below the ground. It’s being done in sections. Courage is learning a lot about concrete.

This it looking down from the front towards the mountain.

And this is looking down from behind..

Cat news is Raiku caught another something. I am not sure what it was because, he has quickly learned that if he puts his catch down, it will suddenly disappear. His humans steal it and squirrel it away never to be seen again – well that’s what happened with the last two mice and the scorpion. He doesn’t want this happening again, so he bought something in in for show and tell but then kept it firmly in  his mouth. There was a tail. When approached, he let out the biggest growl he could make with his mouth full. He then shot out the study window and came back an hour or two later looking very satisfied and proud of himself. Claw’d meantime, is far more of a lap cat, but does initiate the wrestling matches. Raiku will often come bounding in to where Claw’d is sitting on my lap, run up and climb on his hind legs and give Claw’d a little nudge, just checking he’s okay. It’s very cute.

I’ve done some late work this evening & am now ready to call it a day.

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Night Fire Below the Street

Thursday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day you stayed at home again while things settled down in your home town. Your Mom sent me a lovely photo of you doing a work sheet. You are so good at writing.

This morning I got up early, fed the cats and made coffee. I went out on the balcony and heard a rumble. Looking down, to my surprise I saw a fire engine heading down the street. I wondered what had happened and thought there must be a backstory. I went onto the Whatsapp group to discover that (probably) a vagrant had lit a fire below the houses on the street in open land between the street houses and Simon’s Town Rd below. The brush caught and it flared up. The home owners took these pictures…

The wind was blowing from the north so it was blowing towards Simon’s Town. The fire services came quickly with 2 posted onto our street while more fought the fire from below. Photo by Charles Booysen.

The residents of 53 and 55 were up with their own hosepipes at 3am. Fortunately, there was no damage or injury but it scared them. It flared up this afternoon, so the fire engine was again at work to dampen things down. Hopefully, that will be the end of it.

For us who live on the mountainside, the threat of fire is something we have thought of often. Mike has spoken about cutting back some of the dead bush close to our boundary before summer. We never imagined a fire coming from below. It’s always a thought that it will come from the mountainside. There is a wooden house high up on the mountain that has stood for decades, which is a comfort to us that fire doesn’t come this way often. We need to be diligent in keeping the dry wood away, especially before the heat and wind of summer becomes apparent.

It’s been a quiet work day. I’ve done about 4 and a half hours.

David went out this morning and came home exhausted. He took 11 minutes to get up the stairs. He purposefully takes his time so he doesn’t overdo it. The fatigue is the thing that he needs to  manage. If you look at him, you’ll think he’s fine. When you see him get up to walk, you’ll realise he’s not.

Psalm 145:2

Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂
