Silvermine Waterfall in Full Flow

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today is Father’s Day and it was your Oupa’s birthday so you had a happy day celebrating both events.

Back in Fish Hoek, I did another two walks today. The first was to Harbour Bay. I walked across Glencairn Beach…

This river running under the Glencairn bridge is known as Else’s River

I found a photo of the area in 1910 on this website – https://gosouth.co.za/glencairn-the-early-years/ That’s the Glencairn Hotel built in 1905

I did the shopping at Harbour Bay and started my return walk. The plan was for Mike to pick me up. He was following me on Google and he found me just before Dixies. It was a good walk.

But my walking was not over. This afternoon we went to the Silvermine Waterfall (Gate 2 side). We haven’t been there for 8 years. The amount of water coming off the mountain was phenomenal & the track is wet.

Stepping stones…

The waterfall hidden amidst the surrounding shrubbery…

The bubbling brook above the waterfall…

Everything is so green…

Down at the waterfall…

Steps back up to the path…

It was a lovely afternoon walk.

I’m ready for the new week.

Psalm 119:90
Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

Admiral’s Waterfall

Saturday

Dear Elsie

It was good to speak to you today and to find out you are feeling a little better.

Today was the day I had a couple of walks. The first was this morning when I braved the possibility of rain and walked to Valyland to buy a few groceries and more wool. There was a light shower but nothing my umbrella couldn’t handle. Having said that, the umbrella broke on the way home. It’s served its purpose. I used to walk to Valyland quite a bit when we lived in Sun Valley so it was interesting for me to compare the distances. From Sun Valley there are not really any hills involved but it’s half a kilometer longer. From our current home it’s 2.6km but there are hills both way. I walked there via Hillside Road and back along Highway. Views from Highway – on the Main Rd side.

The second walk was later this afternoon when we headed for Simon’s Town to take a look at the waterfall. Earlier on in the day someone had posted this photo to one of the whatsapp groups. There was a lot of rain last night again and it’s coming off the mountain in floods.

That peaked our appetite to see the waterfall for ourselves. The path starts at the end of Barnard Rd in Simon’s Town.

The path is very wet and in one place it’s narrow as there has been a rock fall. All along the path you can hear the sound of rushing water. A short scramble up a rough rocky rise leads around a bend to the falls . They start quite high up and come cascading down

The water then rushes over the rocks…

…and plunges down another steep cliff creating a spectacular sight from below. This photo by the talented Nigel Riley captures it’s splendor.

I also got a photo of it from one of the roads below.

I took a little video of the upper falls.

Back along the path, Simon’s Town looked very pretty in the fading sunlight.

It’s not a long walk and really worth the effort. Home and tonight is pizza night.

The other notable thing about today is it’s three years ago I had my jaw surgery! Amazing that 3 years have passed. I still have a little numbness in the left corner of my mouth but not enough to impact my life. I only notice it when I think about it. It’s probably there for good.

Psalm 119:89
Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

A Good Day for David

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was a good day for David but not such a good day for you! You have tonsillitis! This seems to be a right of passage for 5-year olds. It’s very uncomfortable, but you will get better soon.

Yesterday was not such a good day for David. His fatigue was at a different level and he had unexpected chest pain and palpitations. Worse symptoms = good news. The medication is working. Today he feels he has a bit more energy and is not as bad as yesterday. He took it super easy today. He had some work to do & once done scheduled a call with his manager. He had a frank conversation with him regarding the slowness of his recovery and said the August deadline may now not be possible. The response was more than David could have hoped for. The company will let him take as much time as he needs, even if he only goes to China next year. They have had to wait for teachers before and they are happy to wait for David.  After some discussion about how many of the classes are moving from being online to in-class,  David has said on a Saturday and Sunday he can start at 6am SA time, which will open up more opportunities for him. The outcome was very positive. The school will accommodate him for as long as needed.  Lots to be grateful for.

Despite it being a public holiday, I worked most of the day. I also went and did a big shop. Another storm is brewing and more rain will lash the Cape tonight and tomorrow. The dam levels are going to be close to full by the time this week is over. I’ll be sure to watch out for those details on Monday.

Last night we went for a walk to the end of the beach. It was good to be able to do this again. Sea, surfer and navy ship.

It’s looking very foreboding now.

Weekend! Tomorrow I think I’ll be hanging out at home.

Psalm 119:77
Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

We Woke Up To Dripping

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Last night it poured with rain again. I’ve mentioned this before but never in my time in Cape Town can I remember such consistently wet weather for so many weeks late May and into June.  There are significant days in these two months that I remember well on their respective years. The first is of course, your birthday Elsie. On 21st May 2018, the day you were born the heavens opened! We travelled through to Worcester where you were born and along the N1 as we drove towards Paarl, we had our windscreen wipers on full blast. It was such an inconvenience because we were trying to rush to be at the hospital, but with the amount of water we couldn’t go too fast. Also, at the same time, 2017 had been the year of the most terrible drought, so we were rejoicing in the water coming down in sheets. It certainly marked the end of the drought and the dreaded ‘Day Zero’ that all the city had been talking about. It was a good day!

The other good day I remember was 20th June 2009, the day your parents got married! That day we enjoyed beautiful blue skies and brilliant sunshine.

Last night I woke up around 3am to the sound of dripping. It was raining heavily and I couldn’t decide where the drips were coming from. It turns out the rain was coming from a completely new direction – from straight off the sea. It was driven hard into our bedroom window and to Julian’s above. At the higher level it went under flashing and inexplicably dripped down into our bedroom. We have a dresser with two drawers in which we keep some technology. One was open and it was into that, that the drips of water dropped. There wasn’t a lot but it shouldn’t have been there in the first place. It is rare to have rain from that direction, so hopefully it won’t happen again.

I worked for at least 7 hours today and soon we will walk down to the beach, hopefully missing a shower that seems to be heading our way. At least there has been a little sunshine today and I managed to get towels dry.

I have started knitting Mike a scarf. That’s the next knitting project. I’m knitting 4 stitches of rib each side to prevent it from curling in.

David had a busy day yesterday so today he is kaput. No blood test results yet. We just carry on going.

Psalm 119:76
May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

A Lot To Be Grateful For

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that we woke up in the very early morning to hear lashing rain and high winds. Chairs were being blown over on the balconies and it turned out to be a storm of note. I wondered if there were any planes in the sky, so I looked up flight radar and to my surprise saw a Cargo plane weaving its way towards Cape Town.

At this point (around 3am) Mike and I both went upstairs to Julian’s balcony to retrieve cushions and a chair that was being blown around. By the time we had done that, I was pleased to see the plane had landed.

It hardly rained today but has been very overcast and moody with grey skies and grey sea and low clouds.  Every Wednesday I have a work meeting at 11am, but today’s was moved to 3pm. This meant that I could join a gathering to say goodbye to Leanne who will soon be calling Scotland home. Some of the photos…

And then all of us…

A number of the conversations I had with some of my friends were about David and his health. Last year, I was very aware that trials and adversity had hardly touched our family. That has all changed now. To my future self, I want to look back and see that I managed this well. Am I praising the Lord in all circumstances? Not nearly enough! There is a lot to be grateful for. David is no different today but the Dr did message to say it’s early days and we must keep going. We’ll see what the blood tests show when we get the results tomorrow. There is a lot to be grateful for because David is mentally and emotionally strong and he is not depressed. There is a lot to be grateful for because he is trusting God and knows He has a plan. He can continue to work and is managing to do some YouTube work as well.  Yes his life is a fraction of what it has been, but he is able to process, reevaluate his circumstances and lower his expectations. As much as it’s really hard for us to watch, he is doing okay, despite his debilitating fatigue.  Yes, there is a lot to be grateful for.

Psalm 119:73

Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

David Had His 2nd Round of Bloodwork

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day David had his 2nd round of blood work. My expectation with him and his treatment would be what the Doctor predicted. Two to three weeks on the medication would lead to a few days feeling terrible and then he would start getting better. Today marks 4 weeks on the medication. He hasn’t really felt terrible on it, but he is definitely more fatigued. In the morning, he has a bit more energy as he has had a good night sleep, but by the time the afternoon comes, he is super tired. Everything is just such a lot of work. I think the worsening fatigue is a good sign but the fact he hasn’t turned the corner is not what we want to hear.

It’s a case of lowering expectations and just waiting this out. David has mustered more patience than I. He is philosophical but last night we had a realistic conversation and it doesn’t make him feel great that China may now not happen this year. It’s a case of constantly re-evaluating his life, trying to find new things to do…things that don’t take a lot of energy. Almost everything takes a lot of energy. When he’s around, I try to stay positive. When he’s not around, I’m a mess.

The other night to get some laughter going, we looked up YouTube cat videos. They never let us down!

Today I went shopping and almost missed the rain. I got caught in a bit of a prefrontal shower. Now it’s cold and drizzly and looks set to be rainy for the few days ahead. Tomorrow Julian arrives to cheer us all up! No pressure.

I worked and now I’m off to knit.

Psalm 119:68
You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.

The other morning, I was sitting in my rocking chair. It was still dark and clouds filled the sky. As I looked up, I saw a glow of light pushing through the cloud. It was the the moon. It came into view and then another cloud covered it. It was a good reminder that even though we can’t see God, He is there.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

David’s Smashed Camera Lens

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was a big day for you! Your finally found your voice at school! My darling shy little one, you spoke! We are so proud of you. Small steps. The other thing that happened today is the blanket strips began to be sewn.

I’m going to finish the 6th strip of 10 squares and then courier it to Swellendam and my part of red blanket making will be over. It’s been fun. Knitting is very therapeutic and a good stress reliever. Mike wants a scarf next so my knitting days are not over.

I worked for close to 10 hours today. It’s because I woke up early and began at 7am. While I was working, Courage was overseeing a delivery of sand being lugged up the stairs. It’s now in a big heap behind the house.

As we had extra help, they also bought the very heavy window frame up. I don’t even know how they got it round the house, but they did. It’s super heavy and awkward.

While I was up at the top, I took a photo of the long stairs going down. It also shows Mike’s stamp on the front entrance, with his lamp, new gate and the portico just in view.

It also shows the ‘fancourt slate’ day. It’s cold out there. Another day we would light a fire if we had a fireplace!

So while I was working and sand was being lugged up the stairs, Mike went into Cape Town to take David’s smashed camera lens to Cameraland. It needs a damage assessment for the insurers. The tripod got knocked over a few weeks ago and it crashed either into the wall or onto the floor. The outside looked fine. The inside was in smithereens. Poor David was very bleak. He returned from his Joburg trip to find it like this.

Anyway, tomorrow, we should get the formal damage assessment and we can submit it to the insurers with the quote.

Now it’s time for dinner.

Psalm 119:66
Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Traffic Drone & We Beat the Cold Front

Sunday

Dear Elsie,

It was a treat to see you yesterday and today! You are growing up so fast. You are so very entertaining and say all sorts of fun things, like when eating jelly you asked, “Does jelly come from animals?” Thankfully, your Mom had the right answer in the simplest terms! We enjoyed being with the family to celebrate Adrian’s birthday. I also handed over the 5 strips of knitting.

Last night we slept over at a guest house around the corner.

It was nice to have fireplace.

Early this morning, I was summonsed! The family were up and so just after 7am, leaving Mike sleeping, I walked out into a cool sparkling clear morning. I looked up and there was a massive contrail.

We spent the morning with the family and then just after 11am, we headed home, hoping to beat the incoming cold front. We didn’t spot any traffic drones. Yesterday, I was driving a bit over the speed limit on the N2.  I saw what looked like an unmarked police van on the side of the road, so I immediately slowed down. Then to our surprise, coming straight towards us in the air right down the middle of the freeway was a massive drone. By then I was going about 100km/hour. It swooped down to about 30m above us and was really front and centre. I’ve never seen such a thing. I googled them and found this photo which is exactly what it was.

So, we’ll see in a couple of months if I get a fat speeding fine. This was on the N2 between Riviersonderend and Swellendam. I got a speeding fine of R800 quite a few years ago. It’s an open road with very little traffic and very easy to go too fast. Apparently these drones are used to identify stolen vehicles and also to recognise number plates to see if there are any outstanding fines. Hopefully it didn’t catch me when I was over the speed limit.

We got home in 3 hours and could see the cold front approaching from Sir Lowry’s Pass.

Now I’m back in my rocking chair and I’ve been watching a couple of wind surfers challenging themselves in choppy waters. They have both crashed a couple of times with one of them a little more in the water than on top. You must have to have serious upper body strength and control to be this far from the beach. But having said that, if you do get worn out, you can always get onto your tummy and paddle home, like this guy did back in 2021. I watched him from the cat walk.

At least there are two of them. I’ve just seen one of them wipe out and the other skim across to him to see if he was okay. Clearly he was because they are now zipping along quite far out in the bay. If it were me, I’ve be heading towards home not away from it! I’m doing this blog from my rocking chair, hence my windsurfer commentary. Now it’s beginning to rain & they appear to be heading back towards the beach. Such skill!

Psalm 119:64
The earth is filled with your love, Lord; teach me your decrees.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Early Blog on a Sunny Day

Dear Elsie

Today’s the day that I get to see you! Hence the early blog on a sunny day. It’s been wonderful to have some sunshine today. I think Cape Town has heaved a collective sigh to enjoy some blue skies and warmth ahead of yet another fat cold front expected tomorrow.  Calm seas in the meantime.

David came up early for coffee and breakfast as he has a teaching day. Still no improvement. The waiting continues. I read last night that if he has resistance to the current medication, there is another they will put him on. The blood tests on Tuesday will provide the required clarity. It’s 4 weeks on Tuesday since he started treatment and Thursday marks the awful 4 month mark since this medical issue began. It’s been a trial of note.

Meantime the knitting continues. The early blog is because we are waiting for guests to arrive in about an hour and then we will head off to Swellendam for the night. This way I don’t need to take my laptop.

I’m going to go enjoy the sunshine.

Psalm 119:59
I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Our Courtyard Gate is Finished

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was a day with many things that happened and one of the big things was the gate to our courtyard got finished and hung. Mike, Courage and Brian all needed to get it in place.

Well done Mike! It looks fabulous.

Gate from the front door.

This adds another level of security and privacy.

Halfway through the day, a message went out on the street Whatsapp group that there were whales. When I looked out the window, there they were. The Whale Watching boat was also keen to arrive to see the sight.

The two whales continued towards Simon’s Town and so the boat got a good look. So did a passing paddler.

Such a pleasure to see them back in the bay. When I went out a short while later, a lot of traffic had stopped along Simon’s Town road to have a look.

I worked for about 5 or 6 hours. In the mid afternoon, David and I went for a drive. We stopped at a spot overlooking Smitswinkel houses.

Quite a spot. One day I’d like to walk down there and now I know where to park and which path to use.

Home and we’ve had fish for dinner. David remains really, really tired. This is expected and hopefully it won’t last much longer. Hopefully, his endothelium will recover and he will regain his strength. Each day we are waiting.

It’s the weekend and I’m so happy for it. Time to knit & we also get a quick trip to Swellendam.

Psalm 119:58

I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Waiting and Praying and Hoping and Trusting

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day there was more rain. I cannot remember a year where we have had so many cold fronts come crashing into the Cape as early in the winter as this. For the last few weeks we have been battered by strong winds and rain. It’s been great for the dam levels and for our tanks, but it does make me think of poor England. It rains nearly 149 days of the year in the UK. In South Africa it’s less than half that.  It seems now we are waiting for the rain to go away.

We are also just waiting for David to get better. He had some signs of being worse which was a good thing, but there has been no swift turn-around. No 2-3 bad days followed by an improvement in strength and energy. He has been really tired. We have to be patient but it’s not easy – just wondering if the medication is working or if he does have some physical conflict with it not doing what it’s supposed to do. All so stressful. When David starts getting better, I will be happier. Until then, we just keep waiting and praying and hoping and trusting. Nothing more can be done. Patience.

Today I worked for close to 8 hours. I’ve still got quite a lot of work to do but on a Thursday our system gets maintenance done so I had to get off at 5pm. Forced work stoppage. So now it’s time for the evening routine to kick in. I’ll wrap this up and then knit until David comes up for dinner.

Let’s see what else I can find in Psalm 119 that will be an encouragement to us all.

Psalm 119:57

You are my portion, Lord; I have promised to obey your words.

We just keep going.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

A Good Fishing Morning

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we saw a lot of fishing boats out in the bay. They were there when we woke up, so clearly it was a good morning for fishing. All the lights in the dark are little fishing boats. There were about 7 of them. The double dots are boats that were one behind each other. This was about 6.45am

A little later…at 7.25am, the boats were camouflaged against the early morning light.

They soon called it a night and started chugging back to Kalk Bay Harbour where they lined up one behind the other to get back to their mooring.

Every now and again (a handful of times) I hear a helicopter flying by really low. I’m never in time to get a photo, but today I did. It is an army helicopter & was below the level of our house, so flying super low.

I stayed home (mainly) today apart from taking a walk up the road (in light drizzle) to see the progress being made at a house that is getting a funicular. We will need one at least 3 times the height!

Today I was reminded of something that happened on this day 12 years ago. I was at Radio CCfm early in the morning and there had been some trouble with the lock of the top floor toilet. About 10 minutes before I was due in the studio, I stepped into the loo and stupidly locked the door. I really didn’t need to – I was the only person up there and we had been advised not to because it was a bit sticky. Once locked, I couldn’t unlock it. There I was trapped in the 3rd floor toilet. I ended up launching myself up through this little window and going head first down the other side, scrambling not to fall and being so grateful that the office door beyond was unlocked.

I made it to the studio in time!

And finally today, I finished another strip. Then there were 4. Still some to go.

Stacey will wave her magic hand over it to crochet them together.

Psalm 119:52
I remember, Lord, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Due Diligence

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

As you grow up you’ll eventually hear about the term ‘Due Diligence.’ I looked up the definition.

It’s quite good to know because as we have a couple of units on Airbnb and as a result there are guests coming up and down the stairs, we need to exercise due diligence to reduce the chance of accidents.

But today, I did Personal Due Diligence and made my biennial visit to the Gynae. Every two years makes it do-able. The biggest issue I’ve got is related to my bone density. I had my first bone density test in 2015 & the next in February this year. So in those 8 years, there has been a 2% deterioration in my lower back and a 6% in my hips. You would have thought the 6% would have worried the doctor but not so. He was more worried about the 2%. It’s no osteoporosis, but it could turn into that. He said I can’t turn it around, but I can prevent it from getting worse.

I’ve been taking this variety because it apparently doesn’t affect cardiac health which other calcium varieties might. The calcium will prevent bone degeneration.

The other thing that will help prevent further deterioration is weight-bearing exercise. Swimming is not weight-bearing. Climbing our stairs is, so to hike and walk and climb stairs – all good for me and to be continued for as long as possible. Keep moving.

Talking of keeping moving, it’s something David is not doing! He has been feeling some effects of his medication. His long covid symptoms are more intense, which is a good thing. We don’t know how this will end, but we do expect he should go from bad to worse and then finally to better. Despite his physical health, he is in good spirits. Next week he is due for more blood work.

Good verse for David

Psalm 119:50
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Today Was Cold

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I saw a photo of you eating lunch at school and rocking on the rocking horse singing at the top of your voice! I love to see photos and videos of you. Here in Fish Hoek it was really cold – looking across the bay at the mountains, I can only spot a little snow on what I think is Sneeukop. We are not used to the cold here! I took a walk this morning and it was certainly very gray.

My go to hot drinks on cold days have become hot chocolate and rooibos tea….that’s after I’ve had my 2 coffees for the day. The other day I went to buy tea and they didn’t have ginger rooibos which I like, so I bought this one and loved it as soon as I tasted it.

It’s very refreshing. It’s an unusual combination but I find the watermelon dominant.

I worked 8 hours today.

And now I’m going to knit.

Psalm 119:45
I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.

I love this verse. We think that following the truths of the Bible will restrict us but on the contrary, it sets us free.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Tanks Overflowed

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day it poured with rain in the afternoon and the tanks started to overflow. The only thing was is the water was gushing down the mountain and over the gabion baskets and down some stairs. It was saturating already saturated ground and we don’t want any ground to collapse.

Mike went down to dig a gully to direct the flow away from the gabion baskets.

He got a good soaking himself but the job was soon done. I didn’t do much except pass him some rocks to make an edge for the little trench he had dug. At least now when it pours with rain again, the water won’t cause a deluge over the rocks. Courage and Brian can do a better job tomorrow.

This morning, I watched another big Boeing fly over False Bay… there it is above the red line.

Filled with excited people returning or visiting, it left London 11 hours before.  I watched while it went behind clouds and then reappeared just before it landed.

I have to admit I love watching planes.

A truly restful day (and weekend) will end after we’ve had pizza for dinner!

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Psalm 119:37
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your Word.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
