Swim & Hike

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I had both a swim and a hike. I also had a call with you and you showed me your running skills! We had a good chat.

We weren’t going to go to the beach today because we’ve done 5 swims this week & we were planning a hike this afternoon. We decided we would go in case we didn’t do the afternoon walk. In the end we did both. There was a lot of activity going on at the beach. The Trek fishermen were pulling in their nets; kayakers were paddling; surf-skiers were too; the shark-spotters were busy putting out the net; people were swimming and amidst it all, there was a baptism going on! The sun was shining, the wind from the north and the sea very flat. It’s no wonder it was so busy.

We came home and had a leisurely rest of day. We welcomed a couple of Dutch girls who spoke excellent English. They said they would be here at 2:30pm so I was downstairs waiting for them. I don’t mind the wait. I sat in the shade, but by 3pm, when they hadn’t arrived, I went back up. I knew they didn’t have WIFI so figured they must have been delayed. Then I got a text message to say they were in Kalk Bay. They had selected the wrong area with the same address and gone all the way there. Oops!

They soon arrived and all was well. I’m glad I didn’t get a call when they were standing outside the gate above!

At 5pm, we went off to walk up Trappieskop and then walk along the firebreak between Clovelly and Kalk Bay back to the car.

Going up Trappieskop…

View from the firebreak…

Back into Kalk Bay…

We went slowly and took our time. It was 3.5km and took us 2 hours. It’s not too strenuous. We really enjoyed it.

We picked up pizza on the way home and now I’m ready for bed.

Psalm 21:13
Be exalted in your strength, Lord; we will sing and praise your might.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Magic of Boerseep

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I learned about the real magic of Boerseep. This is laundry soap that is amazing. We’ve had it for a while, but today it really proved its value. Tomorrow we have guests arriving so early this morning, Mike and I went down and cleaned the apartment. I put the new linen on the bed and as I finished, I noticed the duvet cover had a spot of orange just in the wrong place. Argggh! It looked like a blot of tomato. It was about where the orange dot is. I got little bit of paper towel and put some jik on it and carefully patted it.

It spread! Ah man! Then I thought if I turned the duvet sideways, with the opening at the side, I could put the throw over the mark, so I did that and then after we had finished cleaning, we went to the beach.

The sea was so flat and because we were late the net was out and it was a lovely swim. I just loved it. When we got home, I went back to the apartment, looked at the hidden mark & it was still there. As the guests are only arriving tomorrow, I have time, so I took the duvet cover off and took it upstairs for some proper treatment. Enter Boerseep!

We’ve had this for ages and it has been used from time to time, but with this stubborn little badly placed mark it worked like a charm. I scrubbed the spot for a few minutes, rinsed it and put the cover through the wash. I then tumble dried it to cupboard dry and hung it on the inside line to finish off. This evening I put it back on the bed and it was perfect.

I love this set of linen and even though it’s had a lot of wear, it’s still got lots of life in it.  Go Ouma Hannah’s Boerseep!

I worked about 4 or 5 hours and finally got a bulging inbox with 740 emails down to zero. It was very satisfying!

I also stopped by Aunty Ivy’s and picked up a lot of biscuits for future guests! Always appreciate her hard work. They freeze perfectly.

With that done and my inbox empty, it’s a relaxing weekend that lies ahead.

Psalm 20:7
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the Name of the Lord our God.

There’s a truth.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Little Piece of Paradise

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you had  your first swimming lesson! I’m so excited for you to learn to swim. We went swimming too. The sea was very flat and swimming was hard work.  I swam round the barrel, to the lighthouse and back to the barrel and still didn’t quite get to 2km.

It’s a little piece of paradise…

I worked 8 hours and had a number of eye breaks. One of them was spent watching 2 jet skis and an inflatable roaring around False Bay. It was such a lovely day for such activities.

I had afternoon appointments and then we went out for dinner.

Today, Google bought up this photo…

I love looking back. It is a constant reminder of how far we have come and how little steps all add up to something big. Never despise the day of small beginnings. This was once where the entrance would be.

The rock was used as the step into the house for a long while.

And then there were these days…rock uncovered –

We were never at a loss for rocks…

Courage building the wall….

Front entrance almost finished.

Courage has taken random rocks and created amazing walls…

Small steps! We  have come a long way but still have lots that can be and is being done. One day at a time.

Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Beach – Work – Walk

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you went back to school and into the Lion’s class which is very exciting for you. For us it was off to the beach first. We went a little later than usual. It was lovely and flat and I enjoyed the swim. One day my Elsie kind you will join me on such a day as this…

Home for breakfast and then I worked for just under 8 hours. Julian arrived at lunchtime and so after work, we went for a walk to the end of the road and back and then along the mountainside  back to our house. To get to our property we need to go under a fence. It’s a bit awkward. First I sit down. Then I look for rocks on which to lean so my hands don’t get too dirty…there are plenty to choose from…

Then I lift myself up and get my body as far under the fence as I can…

Before my final Pilates move that gets me to the other side! Awkward to say the least.

But one day there will be a gate!

We had a leisurely dinner – Mike made a marvellous spaghetti bolognaise and we watched the first episode of the latest season of the Crown.

Bedtime now.

Psalm 18:1

I love you, Lord, my strength.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Being Watched Over

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today we went to the beach. The wind began to die down and it was worth the walk down there and we had a nice dip. As soon as I got in I noticed something on the mountainside. The other day when I was up by the shark spotter’s hut, I stood on the road and looked down to where I swim. Today as I swam, I looked up. There is regularly the fisherman’s bakkie there and today, I saw the fish-spotter waving a big flag. When I saw that, I immediately looked towards the fishermen down by the little Fish Hoek lighthouse. Immediately, they sprang into the action. They had seen the signal & their boat was pushed into the waves and they started rowing. The man on the mountain carried on waving his flag until eventually he raised it up and stopped the waving. The fishermen stopped rowing and finished dropping their nets. Soon they returned to the beach and the team started pulling in the catch. It was so interesting to watch. I always feel a little safer when I swim and see the fish-spotter up on the mountainside. With a good pair of binoculars, fish (and sharks) would be easy to see. I feel I’m being watched over.

I worked for 9 hours. My eyes felt gritty at the end of it, so I went and sat on the downstairs terrace and waited for the guests to arrive. While I was there, I thought I’d take a photo from where yesterday’s one was taken from prior to the build. I put December 2017 and January 2023 next to each other.

It’s still remarkable to me that we got the house up. As I walked up the stairs today and entered our level, I thought to myself ‘never in my wildest dreams would I ever have believed I’d live in such a house with such a view. Nope. Never.’ Even having lived here for more than 2 years, it’s still hard to believe that this is my daily view.

While I was down on the terrace, I had company. NDC – (Next Door Cat) Basil came to visit. Such a beauty.

And so friendly.

Time for me to head for bed.

A grateful day.

Psalm 17:6
I call on You, my God, for You will answer me;  turn Your ear to me and hear my prayer.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

A Hardworking Day

Monday

Dear Elsie

Shew! Today was a busy, hardworking day. With the wind still blowing we didn’t go swimming but we did clean the Seaview Apartment. The guest who was there left early and so we could get stuck in early too. We stopped for breakfast before I started my normal work. I worked 9 hours with about an hour’s break. Half an hour was spent moving rocks for a gabion basket. I know that sounds crazy but it’s a good way to get exercise.  From the top the area looks like this. The red box is roughly where we moved stones from in order to prepare for the first gabion basket. The pile of stones on the left came out of that spot…

It’s dusty dirty work but does get us moving and lifting rocks which is good for us. This was my view while I was sitting with Mike piling the stones he passed me.

I was reminded that we sat very close to that spot back in late 2019 just before the house began to be built. We sat and prayed for it. This photo below is where they were doing the first piles.

I was looking for a before photo and searched through all my 2019 photos. What struck me is when you are waiting for something, it’s important to get on with life. So many of the photos were us doing other stuff while we were waiting for the house plans to be passed. We worked on this project for years. The photo below was taken on 17th December 2017. We had gone to the house because Mike wanted to measure something.  Talk about a pipe dream.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.

Anyway, I also got 3 loads of washing done.

So all in all, a good start to the week.

Psalm 16:1
Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Loadshedding

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was a peaceful day. We went to church, did a little shopping, went to friends for lunch and read.

The load-shedding schedule in South Africa has been a bit of a nightmare recently. We are up to schedule 6 which today for us, looked like this:

What this doesn’t show is that we had 4 hours last night as well from 10pm to 2am. To be honest, we don’t notice it because of the 27 solar panels that sit upon our roof. But what does worry me is how supermarkets cope with the fridges being on and off. Can they manage to keep meat cold when there is no electricity for 12 hours of the day? It has a snowball effect to all areas of society & is no good for the economy and sadly, it doesn’t look like its ending either. In fact there are murmurings of Stage 8, which will dish up 14 hours of no power. When we were on the ship, load shedding was an issue far far away.

I’ve just had News 24 open and here’s a story you don’t see often.

We’ve had a good day and I think I will stay indoors today and tomorrow while the strong south-easter blows itself out. Expect rain Gauteng, the wind is howling in the Cape.

Psalm 13:5
I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Bundu Bashing

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today I got into some unexpected bundu bashing. I love walking on the mountainside behind. In the years to come, the access to the path I regularly walk will become less accessible as houses are built. This is our house from the mountainside behind. This path I’m on crosses a few plots. When they are developed we wont’ be able to walk here.

Further along the path, this is looking towards Simon’s Town…

And this is looking towards Fish Hoek…

There is a road that has not yet been built – it’s called Gleneagles Rd and it follows the contour of the mountain above the firebreak. I decided to walk up the firebreak at the start of Gleneagles. The firebreak is clear and easy to walk up. This is the view from the top of it…

The house on the left is on Cliff Road, which has only partially been built and this house and the neighbour have blocked Cliff Road with a gate. I could get onto the road but I couldn’t get out the gate and I knew that, so I (stupidly) decided to climb up the mountain, knowing there are a number of paths that would lead me to the Shark spotter hut at the end of Mountain Rd. Well, the path is completely overgrown and that was how my bundu bashing came about. I was wholly unprepared – walking in shorts, with no stick to assist.

At one point, I was completely stuck. I looked at my position and knew there was absolutely nothing I could do  – no one I could call. I had got myself into this position and now I had to scramble out of it. I kept going higher because I knew there was a path up there.

When I finally got to the road, this is where I had walked…

And that’s the gate I couldn’t get through, but I spent a good few minutes looking to see how I could get round and the next time, I will flipping get onto that road behind the gate and scramble up to the Mountain Rd at the end of it.  This is the view from just below the shark spotter hut. Easy to see sharks (and me swimming!)

Anyway, I now have 100 + bites from my swim yesterday & more than half a dozen scratches from bundu bashing today! It’s the penalty that you pay for playing in the wild outdoors.  No ticks though & gratefully no snakes were seen either.  The view was amazing.

The wind has picked up. I don’t think there will be any swimming until Tuesday.

Other things happened today. We bought a headboard for the loft – finally found one that will suit and was a great price. I also did a couple of hours of work.

And of course, I got to speak to you Elsie and see some of your toy friends – Blossom,  My Little Child & Tierjie. Back to school next week and swimming lessons begin. An exciting year lies ahead.

A good day.

Joie de vie

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I was filled with joie de vie – joy of life – but it looks so much more emphatic in French! It’s the enormous sense of happiness and well-being, contentment and gratitude which comes along on a few days of the year. Today it swept into my soul with the sunniness of the day; the windless beauty of Cape Town capped by blue skies and a turquoise ocean. It was difficult not to be happy.  If only I could bottle the feeling & take a drop under my tongue when the day is not quite so positive!

We did not swim this morning. The day was perfect. The sea was still, but I had work to do, so I threw open the doors and sat at my desk and worked for 7 hours. But then the beauty of the day got the best of me. I got into my swimming costume and at 3pm, I went to the beach. The water was azure and perfectly clear. I swam my 2km in 36 minutes and while doing so, I began to realise it wasn’t just humans who found the water so alluring. I began to feel itchy. It was worth every bite. But I have to say, I’ve not seen so many bites on me before. The naughty critters got into my swimming costume and had a field day. They are tiny bites – almost like from sand fleas. Mike went off for reinforcements…

I’m now nicely creamed up.

The sea was like a swimming pool and one day Elsie, you will be here with me on such a day and we will get to swim together. You would have loved it (bar the bites). If you were with me, I wouldn’t have swum as far out as I did. We would stay in the shallows where there are no tiny things that bite. Such a superb day.

The other thing that happened today is I found out more about the guest who is staying in one of the apartments. He is such a nice man – from the UK – and today when I went to take him bin bags, we got talking. He asked me to guess his profession. Accountant? No. A writer? He does write but that’s not his profession. He goes to Stellenbosch quite often, he said. Something to do with wine? No.  He’s a man of the cloth! A Catholic Priest! I don’t know why this added to my happiness! We’ve never had a Catholic Priest before and I don’t think it will be the last time either. He wants to book the apartment for next January.

A perfect summer’s day.

Psalm 13:6
I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Small Fire on the Train Track

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was another day for a swim, although it was not completely sunny. When we woke up there was quite a lot of cloud about…but it made for a beautiful sunrise.

I swam quite a long way today. I have lost a lot of my swimming fitness, so today was the longest proper swim I’d done in a while. I swam to the Surf Ski club and back and then out to the barrel.

Yesterday, I rushed the blog a bit, so forgot to talk about the cormorant and me. I had swum out to the barrel and as I approached it, a very focused cormorant flew towards the barrel as well. We both arrived at about the same time. He swam around the back of the barrel, so away from me and then judged how he was going to fly onto the drum, which he promptly and proudly did. I swam away amazed at how he did all of this while pretty much ignoring my presence. It is always one of the joys being in the sea and so close, at times, to the bird life.

This afternoon, there was a small fire on the train track below the cat walk. We saw the smoke from our balcony – it was light grey and billowing in big puffs out to sea.  I don’t know the cause but it was reported and put out pretty quickly. Magda from our NHW chat group posted this photo.

Finally, staying on the train track, yesterday while we were walking to Harbour Bay for dinner, this train came in from Simon’s Town. I love trains. This one was driven by a lady who smiled and waved when she saw me taking a photo…

This had me Googling how to become a train driver. I found that you need to do a National Diploma for Train Drivers. Pretty straight forward it seems. Get the diploma, apply for the job.

And finally today my MD checked in with me. It’s a busy time of the year for the other consultants so I’ve been asked to pick up on some additional work they are not coping with.  No problem.

“I will protect them from those who malign them.”

God bless you.

Goggles Came Home

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the goggles came home. They were the ones I left at the beach yesterday. When I arrived at the beach today, immediately someone said ‘are you Helga who lost the goggles? Aly was here. She has your goggles’. It’s the power of the Neighbourhood Watch chat group! The goggles have some history. Last April when we did the cruise to Namibia, I was keen to swim in the ship pool, but had left my goggles at home. My very first dip made me realise eye protection is required. The water was super salty and burned my eyes. We visited the ship shop and bought these ones and they have been my favourite robust Italian goggles ever since.

Aly who retrieved them wasn’t planning on being down on the beach today but it was such an awesome, windfree morning, it was difficult not to go. As I showered afterwards and put my cap and goggles on the wall above the shower, two of the regulars walked past and were quick to chirp to me not to forget them! Day after day I follow the same routine. I turn the shower on and rinse off the goggles before putting them on the wall while I shower.  I’ve done it over and over again. Then yesterday I was distracted and forgot to take the goggles down! Hopefully, it won’t happen again.

I’ve had a solid day’s work today – more than 7 profitable hours under my belt. We will soon go walking so I’m going to wrap this up and then nip down to the cottage to put some final touches in there before the guests arrive tomorrow.

A Day with a Social Twist

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was a day that was quite busy. The morning dawned still and bright and  it was definitely a good day for the beach. It was a bit harder swimming 2km today. Sometimes I think my watch is a little off. I will swim 10m and it records 100m. Today it felt as if I had to swim every cm of the 2km, so it took longer than usual. The water was flat and lovely. Afterwards I inadvertently left my (favourite blue) goggles on the wall above the shower. I only realised when I got home. I sent a message out to our neighbourhood watch Whatsapp group and goggles were retrieved by one of the locals. I’ll get them from Aly on Thursday. She’s one of the main beach photographers and is often there but won’t be tomorrow. You can see in the photo below the shark exclusion net being put out by the shark spotters.

They are now about to take it in but before doing so, they had a bit of a joy ride across the bay on this picture perfect day. That’s them zipping by – they seldom come out this far.

Today had a bit of a social twist as I met with friends for tea, something I haven’t done for ages. Then I had a facial, which was wonderful as my skin has been subject to lots of salt water and sunshine. It needed some hydration.

With all of that, I only worked 4 hours.

And now I think it’s time for a walk.

One of Those Days

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was one of those perfect summer days that come along to Cape Town & are particularly wonderful after a spate of wind. The wind died down over night. The sun shone and the sky was (mostly) blue. Sunbathers flocked to the beach & water traffic was abundant.

We went down to the beach early – the water was not too cold and I got my 2km in with little trouble. We got home and the day began. The regular pre-holiday routine is underway with a morning swim, breakfast and work. We threw the doors open wide and let the beauty of summer flood in.

A few of the locals down at the beach have some sayings. We turn the ailments into cheerful opposites.

  • I’m riddled with good health!
  • I’ve come down with joy!
  • I’m suffering from happiness!

Appreciating each day.

If it is still windless this evening, we may even eat outside of the balcony.

Summer in Cape Town for sure!

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Clovelly Quicksand

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was a super sunny day in Cape Town. The wind has dropped and for the next few days we are expecting some lovely wind-free days.

We walked to & from church and then spent an easy day at home. We sat enjoying an afternoon coffee…

I did a little work in the afternoon – this will take the pressure off tomorrow morning when I want to go to the beach for a morning swim. Tomorrow will be a busy day. We have a sand and cement deliver, extra workers coming and a guest arriving as well.

Today I saw this amazingly old photo of Fish Hoek beach.

I’m not sure where it is from, but I have got this one…which my label says was from Norman.

It is stunning for me to think that I have been in Cape Town for 40 years! When I started coming to Fish Hoek around about that time,  I heard that you needed to be careful at the Clovelly end of Fish Hoek beach – there used to be a Quicksand sign. Since we’ve lived here I haven’t heard of any quicksand stories, but a cursory search online revealed this – twas dated around about 1800…

This excerpt comes from a publication by the City of Cape Town called Stories of the South Peninsula. You can download it here.

It’s time for me to wrap up.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your Name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.

Afternoon Tea

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today we had tea with a previous neighbour. Many years ago, Philomena lived across the road from our Sun Valley house. She had two children, Paul and Hannah. Hannah became good friends with Stacey as they were the same age. In time, they moved away and went back to England but Philomena regularly returns to Cape Town on holiday. Today she came to have tea with her partner Dominic.

We spent a leisurely afternoon catching up. To return to the UK, they are doing the northbound cruise on the ship we cruised south on, so Cape Town to Venice and had a number of questions. They are prolific travellers and have been all over the world and seemingly visited every continent and gone to some really far away places. They had lots of stories to tell. It was great to see them and I’m sure we will see them again before they leave.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, I had got some exercise. If I can’t get to swim because of the wind, I like to walk. I set off at about 7:30am and decided to walk up the hills and jog down them, so that’s what I did. I got a good workout, completing a circuit of about 4.5km. Home for a shower before I was treated to eggs on toast by Mike. That was a lovely treat!

And now it’s evening time. The wind is still blowing but expected to abate a little tomorrow. No wonder there is so much rain in Gauteng.  It does look like we are in for some lovely wind free days in the week ahead.

Psalm 7:10
My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
