Scams!

Tuesday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day I had the 2nd scam attempt in the last week, so I thought I’d write about it so others can be warned!

The first one was a work one. Someone from Nigeria took a random email address and put the Managing Director of the company for whom I work as the name of the sender. This is what it looked like. I’ve taken out Diane’s surname but she’s the MD. I just saw her name and didn’t notice that it came from the wrong email address. I just read the email.

Diane is very innovative and it’s common for her to be using technology to make us more efficient and I thought she was trying something out with her technology team. It was entirely plausible. English was fine – no glaring errors.

So I replied, Sure, and dropped in my cell number.

Then came the Whatsapp. I immediately smelt a rat. It asked for me to go as soon as possible and buy some gift cards. I am sorry I didn’t take a screen shot so I could post it here, but I blocked it and reported it. The number was +234 8124585956 – Nigerian.

So watch out for that one.

The next Scam was an invite from someone on Instagram. Now I’m always deleting and blocking invites from good looking men who claim to be in the US army, have a cat, a kind heart and 2 adorable grandchildren. They are scamsters preying on women in the hope to get some money out of them. Yesterday’s was slightly different. I got an invite from a guy who had won a huge amount of money and was very generously going to give some of it away. Ja, right.

Interestingly, Dave Johnson exists. He did win  the powerball. Only this dave_johnson5413 is not him. It’s someone using his name to get my details so he can say he will send me $30k, but all I need to do is something like send him the bank admin fee and the money will be mine! I found this story on CBS17.com

Don’t be lured in. It’s a scam. If it looks too good to be true it most likely is.

It’s been a good day for Raiku and Claw’d. They got a little balcony time, but more than that, I introduced them to the front courtyard as well as the courtyard off Mike’s study. Claw’d has claimed David as his favourite port of call. This photo was last night.

And tonight, he’s in the same spot.

The experts say to keep new cats inside for 2 weeks. Today is 5 days so we have some time to go before they are allowed outside with  no supervision. They have got a really unusual routine. They wake early and play and eat, then from about 9am to 3pm they retreat to their hiding places and pretty much sleep. Then they come out to play, wrestle,  stretch, eat some more and hang out in the lounge or my bedroom. They are around until we go to bed, at which stage I herd them back to Mike’s study and close the door. Then we can get some sleep. For all I know, they could be awake all night. At least we sleep uninterrupted by flying fur from feline friends.

I worked about 6 hours and with work being a little quieter, I also got to take Julian to the airport.

Psalm 136:1
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  His love endures forever.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Sweet Flavour of the Day

Monday

Dear Elsie

When my eyes opened today, I remembered it’s the 17th July. This day is special as it’s the day I became a Christian in 1979. I always marvel at the gift I was given on that day. Each 17th July, in my Bible reading, these are the words I read from Romans 4. Paul, quoting David,

Romans 4:7-8

Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.

Blessed indeed. And that is the sweet flavour of the day.

I did not work a full day today. Riana came for tea and to meet the cats, which is a stretch because they are still timid in front of strangers. The cats seem to be in a routine of spending some time exploring in the morning and then they head for their hiding place until early evening. That’s when they come to life and happy to come and play in the lounge. This morning, I gave them some supervised balcony time. They peered over the edge, stared curiously at the neighbour’s dog and cat and grew enthusiastically excited over birds flying by. They are slowly adjusting to their new environment and soon this our mountainside house will be their fun playground both inside and out.

This was our sunrise view yesterday morning…

And this is Raiku playing with a ball of silver paper. I had lured them out at lunchtime.

My heart is full.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Beach Art

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today we saw some amazing beach art at Fish Hoek beach. You would have loved it. I had seen a few photos on Facebook and walked past today and saw some more.

Such a lot of amazing detail.

Meanwhile, the cat walk has an amazing display of flowers.

This afternoon Wimbledon Men’s final has dominated our time, with Djokovic taking on Alcaraz in an epic final which is not over yet. Alcaraz leads 2 sets to 1, but Djokovic is resilient and has every potential to come back to win. It’s an exciting match, that’s for sure.

Today, I let the cats explore the inside stairs and I also gave them the opportunity to go out on the balcony. This I am uncertain about because of the sheer drop to the front (3 storeys) and on the side balcony, there is a one storey drop and a potential to leap across to the main entry courtyard. Claw’d was not interested. He didn’t like the cold or the wind and spent a about 30 seconds before retreating inside. Raiku was more adventurous and dashed round the balcony and had a good look towards the main entrance gauging the distance and looking to see if a jump was a possibility. I didn’t let him entertain the thought for longer than a few seconds. We can try again tomorrow.

They spent most of the day chilling in Mike’s office. A short while ago, they woke up and Claw’d decided David’s lap was a comfortable spot.

I’m ready for the new week.

The Lord does whatever pleases Him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Cats Settle In

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we had a lovely long chat with you. You are really doing well and showed me all your lego with all the things you have made as well as the babies and the cats who sit on the top of the wall with the view! You explained what they see. You are such a joy!

Meanwhile, back at home, the cats have had a good day settling in. They did well in Mike’s study overnight. This morning, we felt it would be okay for them to come out of the study, so we blocked the gap under the scullery cupboard and let them loose. They have settled in really well. This is Raiku hiding under the dining room table, well covered by the table cloth. In fact, we think it is possible that he was hiding here all of yesterday afternoon when we couldn’t find him!

Claw’d chilling on the carpet in front of my rocking chair.

The cats on their stand on full alert – this was earlier today.

Later in the day, I could get closer and they were much more chilled.

Raiku let Julian approach and even stroke him.

Very encouraging.

This morning, we left them wandering about and went out with Julian to buy books at a Charity shop in Claremont. I bought a 3-picture frame for my photos with Jonathan the Tortoise. That cost all of R30.

I also bought two bowls. One is about 5cm and the other about 11cm. They are ideal for crunchies, rusks, biltong and a whole lot of other things. Love them, as they cost a collective total of R18!

The final thing about today is as I was thinking of climbing into bed for an afternoon nap, Mike said he was going for a run. So off we went. I shuffled to Glencairn lookout and back – a distance of 4km. Very slow, but we did it.

Now Mike and Julian have gone to buy supper. David is giving a guitar lesson and when that is done at 7pm, he’ll come up and join us for dinner. It’s been a very enjoyable Saturday.

Psalm 135:5
I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Skittish Cats

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day after a very restless night. We made the mistake of keeping the cats in our bedroom for the night and they were wide awake right through the night. While yesterday they were hiding under the bed, by night they were ready to socialise and investigate their surroundings. They climbed all over the place and showed me a lot of attention. When I went to bed, they jumped up on the bed and were merrily kneading and purring, which was a great sign.

At 2.30am, I was woken by their shenanigans and sat on my rocking chair while they milled around. Imagine my surprise when Claw’d wanted to come and sit on my lap. Curling himself up he snuggled down and started purring. Raiku joined him and for a short while I had both on my lap. Good signs, so I thought.

By the light of day, everything changed. They looked at me as if I was a complete stranger that hadn’t lost at least 3 hours of sleep to keep them company. They fled from my advances. The bedroom by morning, was honking of cat litter tray, a cat cushion that hadn’t been washed for its whole life and smelly cat food. A change was required. I put the cushion through the wash.  We let them explore the rest of our floor and they found the most remote, most difficult to access passage in the whole place. Under the cupboard in the scullery. Claw’d stayed there the whole day. Raiku came out and then retreated under the couch.

I had to go out at 1pm. When I got back at 2.30pm, Raiku was gone from under the couch and a window was open. We thought he had escaped. We looked all over and couldn’t find him anywhere. We thought he may have joined Claw’d so Mike took the cover off the bottom of the cupboard and there was Claw’d but no Raiku. We were now freaking out a bit. Then at about 5.30pm, I walked into the lounge and there was Raiku sauntering in as if he had been upstairs. I don’t know where he had been, but we were really pleased he had been found.

By this time, I had got Claw’d into Mike’s study with all their cat paraphernalia and there they will stay until they have got used to us and at least tonight Mike and I will get some sleep. What a day! At least it ended well.

Outside, Mike, Courage and Brian threw the first slab. Paul, the engineer stopped by to check it was ok and they went ahead, using our new cement mixer for the event.

The foundation can cure over the weekend and we can all rest!

Psalm 130:6
I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was an exciting day for us because an overnight secret arrived! Yesterday morning when I woke up there was a Whatsapp message on the neighbourhood watch group about a couple of cats that were in dire need for a home. Their owner who had raised them from kittens was no longer able to have them as he had to move in with his parents to help care for his very sick father. The parents have dogs and the dogs were hounding the cats who were petrified. I saw the two of them and they appeared so well looked after and I just felt they would be a good fit. I tracked down their owner and gave him a call. We arranged today at 11am for us to adopt them.

We told Stacey and David but we didn’t say a word to Julian. Today we went across to Bergvliet and picked them up. The owner had given them a bath, so they were furious with him and they were still damp! Meet Claw’d and Raiku.

Claw’d is the one with the blue eyes. When we arrived home, who was there to meet us but Basil, the next door cat!

They had a little hiss at each other and then we whisked them away.

Right now they are very timid. We have not heard a peep out of them and they spent most of the day under the bed. They slowly came out and explored but as soon as they heard a sound, they dashed back under the bed.

It will take time for them to settle and when they do they will love exploring our little neck of the woods.

So just before 2pm, David came up and we called Julian down. He didn’t know what to expect. Imagine his surprise when I convinced him to get down on his stomach and look under the bed. There was not one kitty but two! We have all been waiting  hopefully for them to come out and socialise but it’s too early for this.

We have just gone in from our walk and when I looked under the bed, the cats were gone! What?! We couldn’t find them, until eventually Mike thought they may be under the rocking chair. There were two little noses peaking out. Under the rocking chair is not the place for them, so I put my  hand under and stroked them until they scuttled out. Then Raiku climbed into his cushion and settled down. He let me go across to him and stroke him, so he’s settling in. Claw’d retreated back to the rocking chair.

Here they are relaxing on their owner’s couch.

As they settle, they will soon return to this chilled life.

A special day!

A good work day. I worked for more than 7 hours and had a hat-trick of placements!

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.

Busy Day Around the House

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that was quite busy around the house. David moved down to the Little Lookout and Ruth cleaned Julian’s apartment. Mike oversaw the making of the form work and also made tiles. I worked for almost 8 hours. And Julian arrived, enjoying the warm Cape Town sun compared to the frosty temperatures Jo’burg has had recently. We went for a walk to the end of the beach and back. As we got to the road, we encountered the cat from next door. Hello Basil.

Cutie pie. He’s so friendly.

At the beach, the tide was super low.

Paddlers were out having fun.

Silvermine River is flowing steadily into the sea.

It was a great walk.

This morning I was browsing through Twitter and found this great post. It’s a good reminder during this season of our lives.

We wait with patience.

First Column

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you sent me a lovely voice note, explaining what colours you like (red and pink) and what colours you don’t like (brown!) as well as all the numbers you wrote to put on the fridge. You are really good at numbers! You also love the school holidays as do your parents, but they do have to come to an end.

This last few days have been busy for the building. Yesterday, sand and stone was delivered and today a (tiny, baby kind of) cement mixer. I don’t know how long it will last but at least it will start getting the job done. It didn’t stop Courage from casting his first column. It’s actually quite a momentous building step because it is needed to be part of the initial foundation to secure the house behind. Now, the owners of that property need to complete the paperwork for the City of Cape Town to say building has commenced!

Mike tried to explain to me what happens next – there are foundations and walls left and right of the column with back fill and then levelling.

Don’t despise the day of small beginnings. Every house needs a beginning. I think Courage was very happy.

It’s been a beautiful sunny day and both David and Mike sat outside with their shirts off getting a bit of Vitamin D. One of the neighbourhood people, Ingrid, posted this amazing sunset photo to the whatsapp group.

Absolutely beautiful.

A solid work day. I worked for about 7 hours. We are expecting guests tonight. They won’t be here before 8pm I don’t think. They are driving from Hogsback, more than 900km away. It’s a long drive.

Snow!

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you made spring rolls! So many fun things to learn. You have got so tall.

This morning I got up quite early and went down to the Seaview Apartment to get the linen up for washing. The next guests come tomorrow and I wanted to get the extra blanket washed. The day was sunny but cool and that was thanks to the snow on the distant mountains.  The Fish Hoek photographers with the big lenses will soon show up.  My cell phone doesn’t do it justice.

But it wasn’t only our mountains that had snow. Julian sent me this one. Tiny little teensie weensie snow flakes falling in Johannesburg.

That was cold. Julian said about 1C.

And then another photo landed on my phone. Swellendam mountains have also had a snowfall.

It must be cold there too.

The main event of the morning was watching David’s Chess YT channel get to 1000 subscribers. I watched it pass 987

and finally…

That made him very happy!

Yesterday after a lovely tea with John and Avril we went to the Berettas where I was a little surprised that the ever crotchety, sometimes snappish Meggy chose me to sit next to, allowing me to stroke her head. Her body language is still not very friendly, but she chose to sit next to me!

I’ve worked 8 hours and now it’s time to close down my laptop and enjoy the evening.

Getting Caught in the Rain

Sunday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day we got caught in the rain. Well, it was really only a passing shower, but it passed for long enough to get us nicely damp. We decided to walk to pick up lunch and snacks for David. After intermittent showers, the sky looked clear with odd clouds here and there. Mike concluded, with confidence, that the umbrella was not required and for him, neither was a jacket. I erred on the side of caution and put on a jacket. We walked down to Fish Hoek along the cat walk – the cloud in the distance should have been a hint.

We went to Woolworths and Pick n Pay and then walked up the mountainside to go home via Daisy Lane. There is a very quirky habit I have got into. I once read that walking backwards is good for you. The safest place to walk backwards is up the path that goes from Hillside to Daisy Lane. It’s safe because you can follow the edge of the path and seldom do I encounter people coming down.

From where I have come.

There’s a little turn off and Daisy Lane begins.

It hugs the hillside and continues up a rise.

Then it comes out at a little tarred road/driveway which joins Highway Rd. It was at this point we started noticing ominous looking clouds and quickened our pace. And then the shower began. I put on my jacket, zipped it up and upped my hood. Mike, not so well protected walked behind me, but he still got pretty damp! It was fun though. We got home just as the shower passed and promptly tumble-dried Mike’s top and my jeans.

This is an early blog because this afternoon, we are getting our social tank filled – first to John and Avril for tea and then to the Berettas for spaghetti bolognaise. A nice way to end the weekend.

David is staying home. He is exhausted today. He’s finished teaching and has taken up all he needs to not come down again until tomorrow morning.

Psalm 126:5
Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Pajama Day

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was a pajama day for me. I spent the entire day in my pajamas with the exception of showering, after which I got back into them. An ideal day then. The highlight was of course, speaking to you and your Mom and hearing all your news and seeing you playing in the new part of your house.  You will absolutely love it when it’s finished.

The other thing that got done today, between showers, was the planting of some seedlings. Some purple dianthus and yellow violas. I like to think we are planting them in memory of Monica and Granny, both of whom were avid gardeners. We do not have the same success they have had but we’ll enjoy these as long as they last.

Last night the electricity for the street finally came on at about 8.30pm, which meant the hot water cylinder started heating and the guests could enjoy a hot shower a little later than that. They left after lunch today and tonight we can all enjoy as many long hot showers as we like.

David’s Chess channel continues to grow. He’s got enough watch hours to monetize and now only needs to get to 1000 subscribers. This is the video that has been doing so well.

David has had a long history of enjoying playing chess & he began the Chess channel quite some time before his long Covid hit. He was also too busy to work on it. His unexpected available time has given him opportunity to do more with it and it may turn into another little side hustle. It’s far easier to feed than his music channel which is still doing okay. He’s got more than 13000 subscribers on that one and one of his videos has been viewed more than 750 000 times, but right now he does not have the energy to record new material for it. Chess is much easier.

I’ve just checked Flowx to see how much more rain we can expect. It looks like this significant cold front will be gone by tomorrow lunchtime & the week ahead appears dry, which is good news for the next guests who arrive on Tuesday.

Psalm 125:4
Lord, do good to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Electricity Box Still Not Fixed

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day the entire street was without electricity – and so far it’s been 22 hours. We have solar, but with the weather cloudy and rainy, the batteries will be hard pressed to last another day. The sun came out in a weak scanty fashion this morning, but it was still enough to charge the batteries up to about 88%.

Varying reports came in from the residents around the faulty box. The electricity department arrived shortly after 8am and then left again. They returned an hour later.

Then they went up the pole.

We were all expecting great things but then they came down the pole and as the rain came down, the huddled into their vans and waited.

And that’s what it’s been like since lunchtime. We have just been down to ask the electricity team who have been sitting in their vehicles for hours. They said the cable is on its way and then they will need an hour or two to fix it. It won’t be done by 6pm, so maybe 7?  We are needing to heat up the hot water so we can all shower and with guests in the Seaview Apartment, there are now 5 of us needing to do that.

While the street whatsapp group was buzzing with queries regarding the electric issues, another message was posted asking for residents to be alert to strangers peering in through house windows. This photo was posted from their security camera…

Then a message was posted that when approached they ran away, which sounded very suspicious. I had to go to the shops so decided to drive to the end of the street to see if I could see these potential crooks. To my amusement I found a couple probably close to my age standing on the road side in the rain. I asked them if they were waiting for someone. They said they were staying at 67 (one of the wooden cottages quite far below the road) and to get out of the rain they  had sought shelter in a doorway while they waited for a friend to arrive. They are here on holiday from Johannesburg! Ha! I thought of the many many times I have gone mooching around people’s holiday houses – maybe not looking in people’s windows but certainly walking around their half-built houses. I’ve probably been in most of the new houses on the street! I told them the street WhatsApp group had mentioned them and they said someone came to shew them away. Completely harmless and a little embarrassed, their friend soon appeared and off they went for a night in Betty’s Bay. The cameras are effective that’s for sure.

Work has been very quiet, so it’s been a pleasant sort of day, with a dash of being unsettled not knowing if the electricity will come back on any time soon. Let’s hope it does.

Weekend!

A Numbers Day

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you sat down and wrote out 1-99.  You got up to 57 and then said your brain was tired.

But then, after your brain recovered, you sat down all by yourself and following the pattern, you finished the grid.

Well done! That was fun.

It was also a number day for David who has been using his spare time on a Chess YouTube Channel. It has done fairly well and his video from yesterday has had 12000 views, which is pretty good for one day. As a result he also got more than 150 additional subscribers. He’s on his way to the monetizing magic number of 1000 subscribers.

He has found chess videos a lot easier to record than music videos that’s for sure. He was up early this morning and came down for coffee and for pre-sunrise splendour.

His camera takes better photos than mine.

David also went out today, so it was 100 steps down to the road, a drive to Olympia, then to Muizenberg. He stopped in Fish Hoek on the way home for a hair cut and then walked very slowly up the 100 steps again. He hasn’t slept this afternoon & recovered quicker than usual after his outing. Small steps.

The wall went up by a couple of rows. It’s slow going because the curve has to be perfect. Mike visits a few times day to make sure it’s right.

This evening a message went out of the street whatsapp group.

Then the power went out and a bunch of people complained, so Mike and I went for a walk on what is a very balmy evening. The electricity department wasn’t working on it. Here’s why…

We are even more grateful for our solar system.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

Foundations and Walls

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today I saw your house from the back and it is really coming along.  It’s looking so good and enormous! I’m looking forward to visiting when it’s finished.

For me today was relatively quiet from a work perspective. I am missing knitting – I need to find something to knit, so when I do have free time, I can pick up my knitting. The day was slightly windy but clear skies which are expected to continue tomorrow before a cold front sweeps in.

Mike, meanwhile, was keeping a close eye on Courage and Brian so they get the back wall perfect! Foundations laid. What makes this different to the other walls is that part of it will be part of the top house foundations.

Brian putting some finishing touches to the part that’s built.

One other thing I did see today were people mooching about on the mountainside plots on the other side of the blue house. We have seen some interest in the mountainside plots above us. The couple I saw were on 14 or 16 Gleneagles. We are hoping the under offer red triangle plot will be bought to someone who can swing their influence to get Gleneagles Road or at least part of it built.

If Gleneagles Rd gets built, there will be dozens of plot owners who start to consider building and it will take all the pressure off our street below. We will have front row seats to see it all happening – which I’m sure will have a noisy downside. We are enjoying the peace in the meantime.

Psalm 124:8
Our help is in the Name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The Real Exercise Was…

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that was to be relatively quiet at work so I got to take Julian to the airport. So that was once down the stairs and back up again. Then I went shopping for David so that was twice down the stairs and back up again.  The real exercise was I forgot my cell phone in the car after the shopping trip, so third time down the stairs and back up again. 255 steps. I need to do more exercise than that, but it was okay for today.

David got his Wagyu – favourite biltong of all time.

Meanwhile, Mike has been experimenting again. This time, he’s taken a look at all the chips of stone that get broken off the rocks and wondered how he could use them. After some experimenting, he made a frame and started making concrete and stone chip tiles. They have worked out really well.

They are a bit too rough to walk on but they will look great on a wall that may need neatening up or on top of the walls. They have so much texture and we have lots of rock off cuts so the material is easily available.

Mike has been in touch with Paul Giloi today so it’s all systems go for the building of the wall on the plot behind.

It’s been great having a few quieter work days.  It doesn’t stay like this so I must enjoy it while it lasts.

Psalm 123:2
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till He shows us His mercy.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
