The Day UCT Burned

Sunday

Today was the day …

…that began as an idyllic Sunday morning. There was not a breath of wind. Mike, Julian and I walked to Fish Hoek for breakfast, returning via the beach…

After we got home, we spent some time relaxing on our balcony. A year ago, in the middle of hard lockdown, we could never have imagined this…

While sitting there I noticed smoke blowing from the other side of the mountain and asked on the neighbourhood watch site if there was a fire. Reports started coming in of a massive fire above Rhodes Memorial. The wind picked up to be a stiff north-westerly berg wind, making it hot and dangerous. It blew the fire down the mountain and razed the Rhodes Mem restaurant.

Reports started coming in of it threatening UCT…news just got worse and worse.

All campuses were evacuated.

It jumped the freeway and burned the historic windmill, built in 1796 (photo credit for this one: Jaco Marais)

And I’ve just seen on Facebook that several parts of UCT are overwhelmed by flames.  The Jager Library is gone, the Sociology building is gone and the Fuller building was on fire.

Pearson Building…

According to the news, the fire is still not under control, so it will be a long night for the fire-fighters.

It’s so, sad.

Romans 15:33

The God of peace be with you.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx
