The Brydes Whale

Tuesday

Today was the day…

We took Julian to the airport and got caught up in very slow traffic over Ou Kaapse Weg. When we got to the other side, we found out why. Yesterday a Brydes Whale washed up on Long Beach in Kommetjie.

They weigh about 14 tonnes…

When the story broke, I didn’t pay much attention, but when we found ourselves next to the massive flat bed truck that had crawled over Ou Kaapse Weg, I got a picture…what a site.

The story went that fishermen first spotted the whale offshore about a week ago. It washed up on the beach on Sunday night and was very decayed. Furthermore it had been heavily scavenged on by various shark species.  A video has been posted on You Tube on how they got it onto the truck…

Quite an event.

Mike and I stopped at some tiling places on the way home and we think we have made a decision for the remainder of the bathroom tiling.  That was a big step forward. Before the airport, we had gone across to Echo and Mike had a long chat with Werner about some other design plans. The balustrades have now been decided upon as well as the height of the roof over our balcony. The idea that I could be waking up in that building in a few short months is quite surreal.

We had some rain overnight last night and a good solid few showers now. Mike’s waterproofing worked. The piano room is dry!
