Rising Glow of Happiness!

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day all the guests checked out. Ruth came and cleaned the cottage and the Seaview Apartment. Next guests in are family! I had this rising glow of happiness as I also have so very little work to do. In fact today, I have only worked an hour.

I have a couple of photos to show you. Yesterday evening we went walking on the beach. It was so calm & the tide was very low. There was lots of beach to walk on.

The sunrise today was spectacular.

Again the sea was very calm and there was not much wind. There was also some lovely cloud cover. I decided to do something I haven’t done for ages. I went for a run. When we were on the ship, I ran a bit on the treadmill. This morning I decided to spend 30 minutes heading towards Simon’s Town. When 30 minutes was up, I’d turn around and go home. I wasn’t going to run the whole way. I am a lazy runner – I run down hills and walk up them. I am also very slow. I thought I would get as far as Dixies but to my surprise I still had 5 minutes to go when I got there. I continued and then realised if I ran like the clappers I would get to the Harbour Bay sign in 30 minutes. I took off in a rush and got there in 30 minutes and 2 seconds. My watch shows me when I’m slow and when I’m fast. The blue is slow and the more it changes to orange and red the faster I’m going. It looks like I’m going super slow towards Harbour Bay, but the blue (over the 5) is blocking the truth.

Look at the red!  I was puffing and panting!

It’s blue on the return. I lumbered back up the hill very slowly. I tried to get home in 30 minutes but going back up Echo steps was grueling so I didn’t make it. I think I took a few minutes longer. The reason for my uncertainty is that my watch stops when I stop and I stopped on the stairs. I am very unathletic so this is worthy of a medal! Running is not required in my world of exercise. I don’t know why I did!

It’s Christmas weekend & I’m on holiday!

Luke 2:11-14
[An angel of the Lord said,] “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favour rests.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Teddy on the Tree

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we got to swim in windless conditions. I forgot to take my goggles so I did a lot of breast stroke. I found myself close to the surf-ski club and there were a few surf-skiers trying to get going on their surf skis. On pair were on a double surf-ski and they kept capsizing. When we see the surf skiers rapidly paddle past our house, I am reminded that they are the most competent of athletes, having mastered the art of staying afloat! Paddlers from far off…

And close by…

The other thing I did today was put Teddy on the tree! Initially he was going to go back to his friends, but he is going to wait for YOU to come, my darling Elsie because your Mom has some work to do on Teddy. Look at the picture below and see the difference between him then…

And now…teddy is armless!  Fortunately your Mom, Elsie is amazing at sewing and teddy will have limbs engineered in no time!

Today I did some work and also some shopping. Almost done with Christmas shopping. It’s time to start wrapping up gifts.

These days are relaxed and without stress. Work is super quiet. It results in afternoon conversations with family.

Tomorrow the Airbnb guests all leave and the next ones only arrive on 28th December.

Luke 2:8-11
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran, xx 🙂

Thirsty Birds

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

We have thirsty birds. The great big long-tailed Cape sugar birds have had babies! Lots of them. Yesterday morning early (5am) I filled the bottle and without thinking put in a lot of sugar. A whole cupful. By last night the bottle was empty! Those young thirsty birds had drunk all the juice. So this morning, I put less sugar in. By 12 noon, they had drunk 3-quarters of the sugar water. I bought it inside and diluted it, filling it to about the 3-quarter mark. That meant there was a lot less sugar in it. Despite less sugar, we still have a steady stream of birds visiting.

I think it must be because it’s summer, it’s warm and there are a lot of birds.

When we got home from our holiday, one of the first things we noticed was our bathroom mat was missing. Then I caught sight of it way down on the ground below the house. During the rain and wind, it had blown off the balcony and landed squashed up against the laundry. Today Mike went down to get it. It wasn’t a simple exercise, but he managed.

Now it’s been rinsed out and it’s back on the balcony drying, only this time, it is pegged fast.

Hopefully, it will be back on our bathroom floor tonight.

This afternoon, our final guests before Christmas arrived. They are only here for 2 nights. Then both cottage and apartment guests leave and we are closed until 28th. It will be a bit of a break.

The weather has been windy, but it looks like it’s abating and from tomorrow for the next few days, calm and sunny days are expected. Ideal for Christmas weekend.

Luke 2:6-7
While [Joseph and Mary] were [in Bethlehem], the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Sharks at Fish Hoek

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day something happened that I had been wondering about for a while. What would happen if I was in the sea and a shark was spotted? Today I found out! I had swum out to the barrel in lovely calm clear water. As I wallowed around out there, I looked up at the shark spotter’s hut. There was no one in it. It was early – just after 7am, so they weren’t on duty yet. The fishermen had their boats on the shore and they had a spotter on the mountainside looking for shoals. At least I knew they were looking out for marine life. I swam back towards the shore. I usually count my strokes. After 300, I stopped swimming and just floated along a bit, doing some breast-stroke and just enjoying the water. That was when I saw a man sprinting on the beach. I thought he was exercising, but as he got closer, I noticed he was blowing a whistle and then he started waving vociferously for us to get out the water. As he got closer to where I was swimming, his actions became more visible and I didn’t waste any time in getting out the water. His waving and gesticulating was so vociferous, I did wonder that if I looked behind me, I may see a massive Jaws like monster snapping at my heals. I was grateful for the fishermen that raised the alarm.

Later, this message was posted on social media…

I was glad I wasn’t out at the barrel when the sharks were seen. Getting back from there in  a hurry would have been more nerve wracking.

It would be great if the shark exclusion net was put out earlier, specially at this time of the year when the sun is rising super early and by 7am the beach is busy.

I sat on the bench and watched the flurry of activity as people were prevented from swimming. Eventually the shark spotters arrived and the white flag went up.  By about 7:45am, the net began to be deployed.

For the rest of the day, I worked & Julian arrived this afternoon.

5 days til Christmas.

Luke 2:1, 4-5
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. So Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Dentist Visit x 3

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we all went to the dentist. When we were on the ship  Mike had a filling come out. It wasn’t sore so he didn’t do anything about it. But we did phone David and ask him to make appointments for us for the dentist. Today was the day. It takes 25 minutes to walk to the dentist from our house. The view from the hill.

The beach is completely empty because there was a sewerage spill yesterday so they said ‘no swimming.’ Today they tested the water and got the results back which were okay, so tomorrow we may get a swim in. The beach has been reopened.

I arrived at the dentist first so went straight in. After a quick examination, the dentist took x-rays. It’s the first time he has seen the inside of my mouth since my jaw surgery which, believe it or not, was 2 and a half years ago! Yup. June 2020. Time passes so quickly. He was very impressed – and was in awe at what can be done.  The x-rays showed no cavities, so I was happy about that.   David has not been to the dentist for a very long time. He needed a filling – it’s his first ever, which is quite an achievement.  Mike had his tooth fixed as well. I walked home again and they followed a little while later.

The other thing that we noticed today was the familiar rumble of a passing train. After another absence, the train service between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town has recommenced.

One of these days I’m going to catch that train!

I worked this morning and then at lunchtime, we walked to Fish Hoek to do some shopping. This afternoon, we cleaned the Seaview Apartment as the guests checked out a day early. They had made an error with their son’s wedding plans. I made soup this afternoon and am now gearing up for a quiet evening.

The day has been lovely. Summer in Cape Town.

Isaiah 9:6

Back at the Beach Day

Sunday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day we went to the beach for the first time in 6 weeks. It was great to be back and to swim in familiar water. It was quite windy and the waves big at times but the most noticeable change was the temperature of the water. It was much warmer. We guessed 19 or 20 degrees. As it was roughish and visibility was not good, I didn’t swim to the barrel, choosing instead to swim just above the breaker line. It was a lovely time. As it’s holidays, it’s getting busy.

I meant to say that Teddy has come home safely. He’ll soon join his friends upstairs but in the meantime, he’s on my desk. Elsie, this is the special Bonsai Oupa gave us a couple of years ago. It is doing well. I think it got a little less water while we were away but it’s looking good for it. Maybe I was watering it too much!

I think Teddy is happy to be home. All that travelling hither and thither and being carried in a backpack. He’s had enough!

One of the things I did on the ship was if I woke up in the night, I went out on the balcony and looked at the amazing display of stars. Often times I saw Orion’s belt and the Southern Cross. I found this picture on this blog.

Last night when I woke around 3:15am, I got up and went out on our balcony and again across the vast expanse of dark sky I saw both constellations.  It’s always interesting looking up information on the stars because it gives me a better idea of what I’m seeing. I’m so ignorant of such matters! I knew load shedding was coming at 4am, but I went back to sleep before then.

Mike is watching the football final on Julian’s floor (I think), so I am going to join him.

Back to work tomorrow…proper work … with a solid internet connection which I appreciate!

Luke 1:68-70

[Zechariah said,] “Praise be to the Lord, God of Israel, because He has come and has redeemed His people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He said through His holy prophets long ago.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Early Morning Boats

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day, I woke early to the throb-throb-throb of passing boats.  It was about 5:25am and there were three rescue boats heading towards Fish Hoek. When they got there, they just hung out in the bay.

Then I noticed Fish Hoek car park had a lot of cars in it and I realised there must be a Surf Ski event. Dozens of packs of surf skiers soon started passing by. I looked it up on line and found it was the Cape Point Challenge. There should be more activity tomorrow. It looks like a lot of hard work.

Today was a good day – we caught up with a lot of washing and Elsie, we also had a long chat with you and your Mom. You showed  me all the things you had been building. You are quite the inventor. We are looking forward to seeing you in January when the whole family is here.

In the afternoon, we sat and had tea on the balcony. It is great to be able to enjoy this view again.

This evening we went to friends for a garden party and now we are home having a quiet evening. I was thinking about a few of the things I learned from the month on the ship. I don’t need so many clothes. I came home and unpacked and realised I just have too many clothes. I need to do a massive cleanout. That will take time.

Christmas a week tomorrow. Our tree is up!

Matthew 1:20-21
An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save his people from their sins.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Home & Weighed!

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today we got home! I woke up really early and looked out the cabin door to see the faint shadows of mountains! We were so close to home. It was soon light enough to take a photo. By then we had passed Noordhoek and were heading along the coast towards Camps Bay…

Coming up to Table Mountain and Lion’s Head…this was 5:05am…

Soon we were in Table Bay and the iconic view came into sight.

We asked someone to take a photo of us…

We had breakfast and then it was time for us to disembark.  I took one last photo from our balcony…

We had selected the self assist option, so we got to the onboard meeting point at 6:30am. We finally got off at about 7:20am. Were in an uber shortly thereafter and arrived home at 8am. That’s the way to do it!

Today has been a day of settling back in. We came home to the place spic and span thanks to both David and Ruth. Ruth is Courage’s wife and she has been kept busy over the last month keeping the units clean as guests have come and gone. Guests arrived today and more tomorrow.

For 40 nights I didn’t have my favourite fruit – Pawpaw – so when we went shopping, that was the first item I put in my trolley.

I took a walk to the end of the street and marvelled at how the house being built had grown. It’s enormous. Talking of growth. We had some of our own. Courage and Brian had done a huge amount of excavation behind. It’s completely changed and the view from up there is amazing. And remember this… on 17th August…

Which had grown to this by 3rd October?

Look at it now!

The rain we have had today has helped. It’s poured down and the top tanks are 3/4 full. We are grateful for an amazing holiday. Oh and I only gained a couple of kilos. My favourite jeans of all time which I left behind (because they are old) are slightly snug, so I have some cutting back to do, but they still fit.

It’s been a good day back. I will sleep well tonight. We have been on a long journey.

Cape Town to Doha 7453km
Doha to Milan 4427 km
Milan to Varenna and back 146km (+100km to St Moritz)
Milan to Venice 271km
Venice to Cape Town by ship – 7595 nautical miles (14065km)

Psalm 4:8
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Last Day – Cruise Tips & Costs

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today is our last day at sea – tonight is our 30th night on the ship. Tomorrow morning, God willing, bright and early we will dock in Cape Town and we will be home! We are so close by and I am thinking of you young Els as we pass along the coast.

We have had the most amazing time and while it’s still fresh in my mind, I want to offer some of our cruise tips and also mention the costs for this MSC cruise. Things for us to remember for next time and for others to benefit from if they stumble upon this entry.

  1. Pack light! We encountered so many people who had more than 1 suitcase per person. They found it so difficult lugging all this baggage to the ship. We packed as light as possible and I found I still didn’t wear all the clothes I packed. There are far fewer formal evenings on the ship so two dresses will suffice for a 30 night MSC cruise. I didn’t need a formal jacket. I didn’t need formal black pants either. Prior to our cruise, we had a week in Italy. Despite being away for 40 nights, this was my luggage – the black backpack was almost empty going. Returning, it’s filled with purchases. The blue backpack is my laptop case. My clothes are in the roller back. Note the ribbons on the backpacks. This was for the purpose of easily identifying our backpacks on the plane when they were in the overhead storage.
  2. Arrive in the departure port at least a day early. Initially we were planning on arriving in Venice the day of the cruise, but decided to change our itinerary and arrive the day before. I’m so glad we did. It made our embarkation so much easier.
  3. Get to the ship as early as you want. Our cruise line gave a preferred time for us to arrive and pleaded with passengers to obey the time slot. We had to leave our accommodation by 10am & we were less than enthusiastic about waiting until 2pm for our specific slot. We decided to head straight to the cruise terminal and wait there. Perhaps they would let us on early. We got there and no one – not a single person – checked our time allocation. We just followed the small crowd and ended up being onboard with internet access by 1pm. It opened up the rest of the afternoon to settle in.
  4. It’s cheaper to buy a lot of things prior to embarkation and we did that right. We bought our internet and excursions before the cruise. I also bought a hair cut and facial treatment. If you buy these on the ship, an additional 15% service fee gets added.
  5. Unless you are a very big alcohol drinker, the drinks package on a repositioning cruise is not worth it. One guy we met said you need to drink 4.2 units of alcohol a day for it to be worth it.  We racked up about 100 Euro on drinks over the 30 days, varying from the odd glass of wine, Pepsi (they don’t have Coke), sparkling water and cappuccino. The cost of the drinks package was 23 Euro per day per person! Expect prices on the ship to be higher than normal. They have to make money, so brace yourself. There are ways of saving. While you can’t bring drinks onboard, you can order a large bottle of water at dinner on the first day and keep the bottle. From then on, take the bottle filled with water from the buffet to the formal dinner and ask for ice and lemon. Price of drinks on MSC Sinfonia in December 2022 (repositioning cruise) – A litre of bottle water was 3.30 Euro. A glass of cheaper house wine 6.50 Euro + 15% and a can of Pepsi zero 3 euro +15%.
  6. If you can afford it, try book a balcony cabin. For us the extra cost for the balcony has been worth it. We booked in February 2022 and had to put down a R3000 deposit. The cost of the cruise for 30 nights for 2 people in a balcony cabin was R105 000. This works out at R1750 per person per night for full board + the moving from port to port, seeing Croatia, Greece, Egypt, Jeddah (albeit from the ship), Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion and Durban and it got us the trip back from Europe. If you take off what the flight would have cost us, it works out at less than R1500 pppn full board which is pretty good.
  7. Take a washing line, some pegs and a small amount of washing powder. One thing you have on a ship is time and so doing the washing is not as much of a chore as it would be at home.
  8. One thing I learned from a YouTube video before leaving was these nifty little things. They are magnetic hooks. I didn’t know if they would work, so I only bought 4. If I had known how well they would work, I would have bought more. We used them a lot.

I thought the sea would be a little rough between Durban and Cape Town. It’s been quite the opposite.  While I believe a storm is brewing for the Mother City, according to Wind Guru we should have an easy docking tomorrow, albeit a rainy one. We are due in early.

I’m going to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by. I will remember these precious moments.

So grateful the internet was just sufficient to get the blog done. I couldn’t connect to my company’s server so work was limited but I could publish this. Note to self – from Reunion to Cape Town by sea, the internet is spotty and not sufficient to work.

My bags are packed. I’m coming home!

Amos 5:8
He who made the Pleiades and Orion and changes deep darkness into morning,
Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea
And pours them out on the surface of the earth, The Lord is His name.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Edging Towards Home

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today is the day we are edging closer to home.

These two days of cruising idly down the South African coast are perfect for adjusting to getting home. We spent most of 2022 knowing this trip was coming – working towards everything to do with it. Planning getting to Italy, getting around Italy, getting to Venice, getting on the ship and then what we would do on each leg.

And now it’s almost over and with it, the year 2022.

So today we had a 4 mile walk around the deck – mile because the walking track is in miles.

We did 14 laps, stopped for water and then walked another 14 laps. The track goes over this bridge in the middle which marks the start of the next lap…you can see a bit of land in the background – we are now passing quite close to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

Big breakfast followed. After a leisurely coffee, we went back to our cabin and rested. In fact, I slept! It was wonderful. One of the things about the internet being extremely slow is I can’t work.  I can somehow get the blog written which immediately comes up because it’s cached. The company I work for is winding down for the year so everything is pretty quiet. I’ll be working til the end of the year but it will be part time and not too much expected.

The TV has now come to life and we have DSTV so we got to watch Trevor Noah who had us laughing. Then we went and got some tea before strolling the deck again. There was a dance class on. Top deck of our floating hotel.

Right now I’m starving – breakfast ended at about 11am and dinner is in 20 minutes, so time to get ready.

As the hours slip by, I’m getting excited about getting home, but today I have already said, ‘today’s the first day of a 2-night getaway!’ We are enjoying each moment.

Genesis 1:2
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Rainy Durban

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we arrived in Durban. It was a rainy day.

It’s not often we’ve been on the ship with so much rain. It poured down for quite a while. Amidst it all, we were so surprised to see the pilot from Durban harbour who came to bring the ship in arrived by helicopter! This was quite a sight.

We disembarked mid-morning. I took a photo of where our cabin is on the ship. Cabin 9202. It was the one on the right of ours that had the balcony glass shattered. That got repaired as soon as we arrived in Seychelles.

We went walking through to Marine World and took a stroll along the pier. There was light rain but it didn’t deter us.

We had coffee at a specialised coffee shop and marvelled at how inexpensive everything is, compared to Europe! We enjoyed the friendliness of the waitresses too. We also found a really nice little clothing shop and I bought a few things. Then we walked back to the port. I commented that if we missed the ship, we could stay here!

The view from our cabin is of the new terminal building…

This makes the entrance to Durban much better. It’s walking distance to Marine World, the beach and Esplanade and altogether looks much better than the previous docking spot.

Now two massive tankers have arrived and the ship is being refuelled.

We are due to ship on out at 6pm. Next stop Cape Town! It has been wonderful not having to get off here and fly home. It’s a good way to slowly adjust to coming home and the end of what has been an amazing 40 night bonanza holiday. Today as I sat in the Pasha Lounge I was again filled with appreciation. So blessed to have been able to do this.

The internet is hanging by a thread, but I have managed to get this done by using my cell phone as a hot spot. If there’s no blog tomorrow or Thursday, it’s because the internet is completely down. If that’s the case, I’ll write them but only upload them when we arrive home. Somehow, over the last few days, it’s hung in there, so I’m expecting the same in the days ahead. See you soon Family. I love you!

Habakkuk 2:14
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

Some of the People

Monday

Dear Elsie,

Today was another quiet day at sea. Because it’s Monday, I had to try to work, so I got up quite early and went to the gym. I did a good hour and a half – first on the treadmill and then I walked on the deck. There was another reason: I completely overate last night. I just couldn’t face too much food today, so after the walking,  a rest and a shower, I had fruit for breakfast and some more for lunch. That will tide me over to dinner and tonight I will show some restraint.

The day has been very overcast. We sat for a while in the Pasha Lounge on the top floor where I like to sit…

As the internet was really bad, we came back to the cabin for a couple of hours and then I went downstairs to a better connectivity place in the hope of being able to attend my Monday meeting. That didn’t work. The internet was terrible. It’s the one thing I need to bear in mind if we do this again. Between Reunion and Durban there is very weak internet connectivity.

We went to the deck and I lay on the sunbed for about 10 minutes. I don’t want to burn. There are many guests who make this their entire day activity and at this stage of the cruise some of them look like they are a complete different colour.

There are lots of interesting people on board. This afternoon I sat and chatted to an Irish couple. Jemma was the one who slipped on rocks in the Seychelles and broke her right wrist. When that little event happened, her husband suggested her leave her in hospital being treated, go back to the ship, get their luggage and fly back to Ireland immediately. She was absolutely adamant to complete the cruise, so that’s what they have done. They get off in Durban tomorrow, spend a few days in the city and fly back to Ireland on Saturday.

Then there’s the couple who sit next to us at dinner. We have separate tables but from time to time have conversations. They are an Afrikaans couple – this is their 4th cruise. They live in Pringle Bay. The other day when we were leaving Reunion, I spoke to another South African pair who live at Silvermine Village. They have also done several cruises and mentioned doing a northbound cruise in 2016 which went Cape Town to Italy via St Helena Island. When they told me that, I immediately said the couple at our table were on that one. When I said they lived in Pringle Bay & were Afrikaans, they said they remembered them & that the gentleman is Johan. They even knew their surname, but they couldn’t remember her name. Johan is very outgoing and polite – we guessed he could have been a bank manager. I Googled him and found out he was a Dominee for 40 years. I also found out the name of his wife and all the retirement activities he does.  Such a nice couple and lots of stories to tell.

Finally, there is Suzanne who is staying in the cabin next to us. She is as quiet as a mouse and only really appears when we are arriving at or departing from a port. Then she stands and watches from her balcony as we do from ours. We learned she was born in Zimbabwe, but left when she was quite young. She studied in the UK and is a scientist. She is travelling alone.

The biggest complaint on the ship has been the lack of TV signal. The World Cup has been on and for some of the most important games, there has been no coverage. Not the ship’s fault but the football crazy guests have been less than impressed.

Tomorrow, loads of people are getting off and it will be interesting to see who takes their place. We have been told we have to get off the ship in Durban just to go through passport control before getting back on. Maybe, we’ll visit some shops.

My main activity when walking in the gym is listening to the Bible. I’ve just about finished it for the year. I’ve finished the New Testament, Psalms & Proverbs and am now up to Zephaniah in the Old Testament. 4 more books to go. When I read the Bible or in this instance, hear its powerful words read to me; when I stand on the ship balcony in the dead of night and stare in awe at the heavens and see the mass of stars, the moon and the vast expanse of inky sky, I hear and I see the hand of God. It stirs my soul.

Nehemiah 9:6
“You alone are the Lord. You have made the heavens, The heaven of heavens with all their host, The earth and all that is on it, The seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them And the heavenly host bows down before You.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran, xx 🙂

Just Watching the Sea Go By

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that was pretty much like yesterday! In fact what I did yesterday, I did today.

However, I did video 1 minute of watching the sea go by. The internet has been dreadfully slow, but eventually the video uploaded.

With internet so poorly, it’s been a good day for sleeping, eating, walking at the gym and reading. Also, we put our clocks back another hour overnight, so now we are back on South African time.

I developed a cough a number of days ago and it has progressed from what I called an aircon cough (it seemed to be caused by the aircon) to a cough that was deeper and sounded like a smoker’s cough. I’m pleased to say today it is better. There are a lot of people coughing and they all sound the same. Fortunately, it didn’t come with a temperature, sore throat, headache, body aches or a loss of taste or smell! It is just a cough.

The other thing I successfully managed to do is stub my toe good and proper! I stepped outside onto the balcony and stumbled straight into the little stool that’s out there, jamming the middle toe of my right foot into the leg. It’s pretty shades of plum, but not too painful.

We are grateful. After all, tonight is the first night of a 5 day cruise! There is much to celebrate.  When we first booked this cruise, we did so specifically because it was Venice to Cape Town. That meant we got the long international flight done up front and cruised home, disembarking  30 minutes from our front door. What we have heard in the meantime, is that there are a number of guests who got the Venice to Durban option. We arrive in Durban on Tuesday, so there is an air of finality sweeping across the cruise. There are farewell events – everyone is invited whether they are getting off or staying on for Cape Town. We went to one of them this evening.

It’s crazy that it’s all come down to this: – just 5 nights left. No wonder we are setting about making the most of it. A 30 night cruise is a rarity and we are feeling blessed to be here. Not rushing to get home. Not desperate for land. Just enjoying each moment.

Hopefully, we’ll get better internet the closer we get to Durban. I have work to do tomorrow.

Psalm 95:5
The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

Perfect Day at Sea

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we had a perfect day at sea. We left Seychelles last evening and made good progress throughout the day past Madagascar towards Durban.

This morning I woke early and when I looked outside, this is what I saw…

We have been two hours ahead of South Africa for the last while and today we had to turn our clocks back an hour. It meant that while I was waking at 5am, it was really 4am. It’s played tricks with me as my watch hasn’t connected to my cell phone. I need to remember that my cell phone clock is right. My watch clock is wrong. My laptop clock is set for South African time. Eventually, I hope to get them all synchronised. I think we’ll stay an hour ahead of SA for another day before we are instructed to turn back the clock for another hour to match Durban. Madagascar is an hour ahead of SA.

We didn’t rush down to breakfast but sauntered in at about 10am. The other day I watched a fellow passenger create a most amazing looking breakfast delight out of flapjacks. I decided to try do the same. It was really delish…

With there only being 6 breakfasts left, I may do the same tomorrow. All this food! We are still eating only twice a day and I did spend more than hour walking on the treadmill today. While at the gym, I saw a whale breach. It was such a great sight.  Back to the cabin for a shower. I also treated myself to this super fruit juice. I sat on the balcony and watched the world go by.

We have encountered a couple of ships passing by.

I took another walk around the deck and watched more deck games happening.

As the days slip away we are clinging to every experience, breathing in the fresh sea air and appreciating each day. We are not bored. We are still loving it and feel very privileged to be here.

Genesis 1:20
Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.”

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Reunion – 2022

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we arrived in Reunion. It was just for one day.

Arriving in Reunion…

The last time we came here it was entirely unremarkable so months  ago I decided to book an excursion. The tour guide started by telling us that the area where the port is, is not very nice and a bit too industrial. She painted a wonderful description of all the different areas of Reunion and it certainly does sound fascinating with a blend of cultures ranging from Chinese to Indian, African & of course French.

The journey was an hour and a half  and went along a very windy road through a lot of fields of sugar cane and later thick vegetation.

The arrow points to the road. The double red line points to the lookout spot.

We were going to one of the highest points in the Indian Ocean. We drove from Sea level to 2150m to a lookout that was shrouded by cloud.

Everyone was waiting for the clouds to lift…

And suddenly they did and there was the most amazing vista…

There are 10 villages that are not accessible by road. Residents have to walk, and food and supplies get flown in by helicopter. It was fascinating.

We never knew this place existed. The escarpment we were on overlooks what is known as Cirque de Mafate. Deep canyons and tiny villages. The place we stopped at is called Piton Maido.

On the trip back to the ship, we stopped at a geranium distillery  but instead of buying scent, I bought a gecko! Happy Christmas me!

After we got back to the ship, I tried to do a bit of work but the internet was pretty awful!

This evening we went to the show with Ian von Memerty. He was really entertaining.

We have 7 nights left on the ship, so today we got all excited and pretended we had just boarded and it was a week long cruise we were going on! A 7-night cruise would be amazing! And we’re on it. We left Reunion just after 6pm & we have now picked up a bit of swell, but it’s not unpleasant. I think it will rock me to sleep.

Psalm 139:9-10
If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even their Your hand guide me – Your right hand will hold me fast.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂
