When Winter Comes to Cape Town

We cannot complain that we have a particularly long or cold winter in Cape Town, but when winter does come to Cape Town, I am taken a bit by surprise. My electric blanket has been the biggest electricity gulping culprit over the last couple of weeks. Today my feet were so frozen that I made a hot water bottle and defrosted them that way. It’s difficult to get up and work at my desk, so I work from bed and then rue the fact that my back is sore.  This morning I worked for about 4 hours, all from bed. Lazy bones! I then put my laptop back on my desk and did a couple more hours from there this afternoon. Hence the cold feet.

They say that about 15cm of snow is expected on the Western Cape mountains early next week. You can check out www.snowreport.co.za for more.

The biggest issue actually with winter in Cape Town is that we are not prepared for it.  We don’t have central heating and not everyone has a fireplace. We don’t even have a decent heater. We are left to overdress with jerseys and thick socks and pile on a couple more blankets. For many years Mike and I went without an electric blanket. That had something to do with it catching alight back in about 1993 – fortunately Mike caught it in time and prevented it from burning the house down. Anyway, for about the next two decades we lived without an electric blanket! It probably was only about 2013 that we got one and have loved turning it on and heating up our bed before crawling in.

This evening we had the most majestic sunset…

Mike has been working feverishly at the house plans and hopes to soon pass them over to the architect. We’ve had to reduce the size – I think I’ve said that on my blog before – but have about 115m2 for our floor – actually more with the balcony and the upstairs unit (where Julian will be) has about 80-90m2. There is a domestic quarters as well of about 40m2. The above view will give way to a different one.

I don’t know if I’ve every written here how we got the property on the mountainside but it’s worth telling for future generations, so perhaps I’ll write about it tomorrow. It’s a crazy story.

Proverbs 18:15

Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
