What The Drought Taught Us

A year ago, here in Cape Town, we faced a crippling drought that taught us how to save water. Mike had the foresight to get a couple of water tanks a year previously. They were pretty full from what were meager winter rains and so we had water in reserve.  This water made our life so much easier. I regularly showered using a bucket of tank water. The drought also certainly taught us to use what we had and avoid using as much municipal water as possible.

So this morning when we woke to find no water in our taps, we reverted to extreme drought conditions and carried on as normal.  Turns out a major water pipe had burst and large chunks of the area were without water, including Sun Valley, the gym and even as far as Lake Michelle. After gym, I stopped and picked up 5 litres of drinking water and had a good bucket shower when I got home. The water came back on around lunchtime. Fantastic winter rains this last season resulted in the drought ending. So grateful for that. We have had rain on and off this summer and a little is forecast for tomorrow as well. Every drop counts.

Today was a 6.5 hour work day. I may do some more tonight, but then again I may not! Applicant CVs to go through: today when I ran the search, there were – 1074. I got it down to 1052. Slowly slowly, I’ll get through these. When I went on leave, I had got it down to 700.

Mike and I are working on some holiday plans. We do a big trip every few years. First one was in 2011, then 2013, then 2017 and now we are planning for October/November 2019. We are so attracted to Italy and are planning a few days in the Lake Como area before, God willing cruising back to SA from Genoa. It’s a crazy year to decide to do this. When we booked the cruise last year some time, I don’t know what we were thinking in regard to the build. Maybe we thought that was a pipe dream. Now it is unfolding into reality, I think I’d better put in a couple more hours of work this evening!

I forgot to tell you the answer to this…

You have to sing the Rudolph the Red nose Reindeer song…

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say,
“Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You’ll go down in history

Mike and I both got it but I must admit it wasn’t that obvious! I had a few people raise their eyebrows. One said, ‘that’s a stretch!’

When we get to the 9th of the month, I am reminded of our wedding. Today we have been married 32 years and 5 months!

Isaiah 63:16

For You are our Father… You, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is Your Name.

Rest secure this day. You are loved.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx:)
