Visit to the ENT

Thursday

Today was a momentous day! I went to see the ENT and came away with information that amazed me. When I was about 6, I fell out of the top cupboard in my bedroom. I had climbed up the shelves and was hoping to get into the top cupboard but slipped and fell to the floor landing heavily on the left side of my head. I was knocked unconscious. Imagine my parents concern! I was rushed off to hospital where I spend a few nights. I have no idea how many but I do remember being wheeled in a wheelchair to a building across the road from the hospital for some testing to see if I had suffered any brain damage. With that concern put to rest, I was discharged and all was well.

Except, I was always slightly deaf in my left ear. In many ways, I’ve enjoyed the peace from sleeping on my right side.

Over the last couple of months, it has got worse. I’m more deaf than I’ve ever been. My ear has been sore (I was treated for an ear infection) and almost daily it feels blocked. I have minor pain that radiates around my left ear. It was time to check it out, so I went to see the ENT.

As soon he saw my braces, he asked if I grind my teeth at night. I don’t think so. I told him that when I had all the investigations and X-rays for  my mouth issues, they never mentioned that I was grinding. He examined me and said both my ears looked fine. There was no swelling, no inflammation, no problems at all.

Then he took an instrument and hit it hard against the side of the examination table before whipping it up and putting it on my forehead.  “Where do you hear the sound?” he asked. It boomed through my left ear. “My left ear,” I replied. He was thrilled. “That means there is no nerve damage in your left ear. What probably happened when you had that fall is it slightly displaced one of the bones and that has caused some loss of hearing, but it’s not the nerve. You could have it repaired.”

I was amazed! All these years, I’ve thought my deafness was permanent. I’ll probably need a hearing aid by the time I’m 60 – that’s what I always thought. But now comes an option to have it further investigated and if he is right, I may be able to have it repaired.  That was good news indeed! What a surprise.

So, the cause of my ear pain is simple. It’s my teeth moving! It’s completely caused by my orthodontic work and it’s been over the last two months because that’s when the orthodonist started moving my lower teeth forward. It’s related to my lower jaw which will be operated on in time and that should resolve the issues altogether.

This means that I can swim again and when I am in discomfort, I just smile and understand it’s part of the process.  What a blessing!

So today has been a good day. It was also the day that David finished working on a project which took a lot of time. Take a look…

Such a great piece.
