There Are Far Better Things Ahead

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, so the saying goes and the same applies with some of life’s difficult circumstances. Many part of South Africa are in the grip of a drought resulting in strict water restrictions. Do you know how good business is for borehole, water tank and pool cover companies? For them the drought is a blessing in disguise.

After the huge burst water main the other day, and the mud flooded down the road, plumbing companies were rapidly called out. One man’s difficulty was another man’s good fortune.

I looked at my seed trays and wondered where the seeds were. There was no growth. What is going on with them, I wondered. Then I remembered when I planted out the tiny bean plants, while the tops were small, the root system was amazing. It had grown long and deep. Maybe that’s what is happening beneath the soil…a root system is developing that will nurture and sustain the plant in times of wind and drought.

We never know what is going on behind the scenes. There may be a drought and no rain in sight. God may seem silent, but He is not. God never sleeps. He always is at work. When we die, we go to an amazing afterlife where we experience first hand what Paul quoted from Isaiah many centuries ago.

1 Corinthians 2:9

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love Him.

We get born into life. We live it. We pass from it.

When we believe God and know and love Him, we know that this is not all there is.

Far beyond the highest star lies an eternity that cannot be fathomed. And one day I will be in it.

So tomorrow night as you admire the moon in all its massive glory, let it be a reminder that God made it and He who created the moon and the stars for our enjoyment has got something far grander lined up for the day we breath our last.

The best is yet to come. C.S. Lewis said a number of things about heaven:

C. S. Lewis: “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.” Lewis added that “the hills and valleys of Heaven will be to those you now experience not as a copy is to an original, nor as a substitute to the genuine article, but as the flower to the root, or the diamond to the coal.”

Diamonds await. We will be the happy recipient.

It’s hard to imagine this – that there are far better things ahead than any we leave behind. But I believe it.

These are the days, but the best is yet to come.
