I was thinking about this yesterday. What makes a good worker? There are three particular aspects that I look for in a good worker. I had an AHA! moment.
- Ability – they must be able to do the job.
- Honesty – this is critical to being a useful, good worker.
- Attitude – when a worker has a good positive attitude it goes a long way to accepting a slightly lacking ability. Ability can be learned.
AHA can be looked upon as a triangle.
If any of them are lacking, the triangle weakens. When they are all in good shape, the triangle is strong and effective.
Each aspect is important. Take one away and you don’t have an efficient useful worker.
We have all experienced the difficulty when we have to work with someone who doesn’t have all three of these all important characteristics.
Whenever my family eats out, it’s always interesting to observe the attitude of the waitress or waiter. Quite often they are surly and sullen and really don’t feel like being there. It shows and it doesn’t make them easy or friendly people to deal with. They may be efficient, but if they are grumpy, they ruin the experience.
An inefficient worker also makes life difficult for the employee. It’s difficult to have workers that don’t do things properly but if they have a good attitude, they may be easier to teach.
The hardest worker to have is one who is dishonest. This is because there is an instant loss of trust. You are not sure if you can leave them to do what is asked without doing something dishonest. Honesty needs to be displayed in many different ways. Time is a big factor. A worker may be dishonest with the employer’s time. With my particular line of work, I work ‘on the clock’. I have a time keeping clock that I turn on every time I start working. I hold it within my ability to be dishonest and leave the clock running while I am doing the blog or doing something else. I try to be completely fair. But it also means that when I am off the clock and I get a call or a string of messages to reply to, that I can add that on when I’m back on the clock.
You want an employer that also has the AHA! attributes.
I guess Ability, Honesty and Attitude can be applied to many different areas of life, from friendship to family members to just plain citizens of the land in which we live.
Quite a challenge to employ giving the best of your ability to South Africa, the best of your honesty to this land and the best of your attitude to living here.
Makes you think!
