The Day For Building Our Walls Has Come

Tuesday

I’ve had a good working day today, although I have to admit, I have been a little off-colour. Not wildly so, just a little sore throat and flu-like symptoms. Glad I haven’t been in Italy lately.

Straight after I’d done some work this morning, I went across to CTM to take back the hexagonal glass tiles we bought for the shower, because we realised they were GLASS and that won’t go down well on a shower floor. While there, I had a good look at laminate options for our floor. We’ve bought tiles for our floor but I’ve really wanted laminate and now we know the exact amount of coverage and how much laying it will cost, we realise it’s not wildly out of our budget. I did some comparisons and some internet research and had a discussion with Mike, so will have to return soon to make the final decision.

Mike spent hours down at the site. He came home for breakfast and then returned. I had an old neighbour unexpectedly pop in. It was good to see her again. She lives in the UK and visits Cape Town from time to time so as to escape the British winter.

I went back to work and Mike soon arrived home. After dinner we went back to Echo.

Wow! I was in awe! So much work has been done…

Please notice Mike’s conduits heading off down the hill. They go from the electricity box in the wall of the new house (which you can see in this photo) and will tie in with the electricity of the original house. One of the conduits feeds electricity to the main gate for security and a camera. That’s only taken him two days! 🙃 Tomorrow he will start on the plug points on the ground floor. It was on the ground floor that I started to get an idea of how everything will work AND how amazing Mike has been in with the design. This is the lounge.

And this is from the corner of the bedroom…the boards still need to go up but you can see where the windows will be.

Meanwhile upstairs we have some activity as well. Upstairs is our level. Remember this… it was from the back corner of the house on our level…February 12th

February 16th…

It now looks like this…columns rising to take the beam that will make up Julian’s floor.

What I’ve learned so far from this build is that if you don’t start something, you can’t finish it. Time goes by – it just doesn’t stop. In order to achieve anything, you have to start it. There is one photo on whatsapp that Julian sent me in December 2016. It was when building started at 53 Echo Rd …

I went to 53 Echo in May 2017 to find out who the builder was. I had to take my life in my hand to get down the hill and took this photo looking up. I spoke to the foreman (whose name is Witness) and he gave me the builder’s name. That’s how we got our builder, Werner.

He met us if not that day, it was a day or two later. We only got our plans into Council in December 2018. We got the piles done in March and April 2019 and then we waited. We got the green light to clear land in September 2019. At that stage the land that needed excavation looked like this…

How far we have come. I wrote a blog in December 2017 – more than two years ago…

Indeed, the day for building our walls has come. TGBTG.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
