It’s 20 full days since the van Breda murders in Stellenbosch and there have still been no arrests, but tik could be involved.
While Henri van Breda stays with a family member, his younger sister Marli is still in hospital. According to reports, she has been moved from ICU to a private general ward, where she remains under police guard for her own protection. A report says she is not allowed any visitors and has a guard at her door. How long police will have to wait before they get a statement from her remains to be seen. If they are waiting for what Marli says before making an arrest, they may wait a while. In the meantime, a killer is on the loose.
It doesn’t take long for all of those of us who have followed these dreadful murders to start surmising that Henri could possibly be responsible, that’s if what we read is to be believed. Trial by media comes to mind, but that’s because what we read in the media is all we have to go on.
The strangest and extremely incriminating information that the media have got hold of relates to Henri’s explanation as to what happened that dreadful morning. According to the News24 story, graphic detail that only a close observer could have known is outlined. Rudi was attacked first. His father came to his defence and was killed next. Then his mother was slain. His sister was attacked last. Henri says the attacker threw the axe at him and he was knocked unconscious. He only woke up 4 hours later and called emergency services.
If I had been in the house that night and seen a crazed attacker, I would have run for my life, screaming as I went.
So none of this makes sense. No one seems to be finding out why the memorial service sheet of the deceased said their date of death was Monday 26th January. Most reports say the attacks took place at 3-30am on Tuesday 27th January.
The Sunday Times today has run an article to say that there may have been Tik involved. The report says detectives may turn to the court to get Henri’s medical records. The Sun Times reports they have spoken to someone who claims to have sold Tik to Henri.
It was leaked to the media sometime ago that blood samples were taken from Henri after the attack. It’s also reported that last year he was a patient at an exclusive drug and mental health facility in Bellville, Cape Town.
All of this is what we read in the media. It’s sick and tragic and as I’ve said before, it comes from the pit of hell.
After the Oscar Pistorius media circus and the Shrien Dewani debarcle, we need strong police work in solving this case in the hope that the murderer will get caught and convicted.
I can imagine there is a lot of police work going on behind the scenes and it’s being kept as much under wrap from the prying media as possible. In the meantime, all we can do is speculate and wait for the day to arrive when we hear that an arrest has been made.
It’s a much followed case, both in Cape Town, across the country and overseas.
God be with Marli and restore her to full health. God be with Henri – if he did it, he needs forgiveness; if he didn’t do it, he needs a worldwide statement released to say he is not a suspect.. at the moment, he’s the only one we can find.
