It has been crazy in our area. This week they closed a strategic road preventing cars from taking a commonly used route out of the Mall towards Fish Hoek. They are widening the intersection over this time because it’s school holidays, but the traffic has been chaotic and it’s actually quicker for Mike and I to walk to the Mall than to drive. So we did.
The intersection…
When we returned we went along this road a little way. They had put a pick through a water pipe…
It’s going to be a testing couple of weeks. If you are coming into Fish Hoek from outside the Valley, skip Ou Kaapse Weg and take Boyes Drive.
While I was downloading my photos, I came across this one I took on Sunday. It’s a maintenance train. They were replacing overhead train wires….
I had never seen one before.
Today I woke early for work and then took a break to go for a walk. Mike joined me as we walked up Harrington and did a loop round past False Bay Hospital and home. With the roadworks, getting to and from the gym has also become more time-consuming. As I was late this morning, an outdoor walk was the answer. We took a later walk to the Mall for a little shopping.
Work done today is about 8 hours.
Nugget from my journey. Mike I got engaged on 9th May 1986, three months before our planned wedding. We prayed about everything and the Lord went before us in providing the most amazing home-ful of stuff. With a small income – I was not quite finished my nursing qualification and Mike was working in full-time Christian service at the Y. I lived in the nurses’ home and he lived at the Y. He had an iron. So did I. I had a kettle and a car. Mike had a guitar. Those were our worldly goods! We set about buying stuff. In those days, the newspaper was the place you turned to for second-hand items. We began to know places in Cape Town by where we bought stuff. We bought the lounge suite in upper Tamboerskloof, the dining room suite in Kenilworth. As much as possible was pre-owned, including the fridge, the stove, the microwave and the washing machine. Even the bed. We slept on that bed for ten years! People were generous. We had friends give us so many gifts that set us up to cook and clean. We found a flat in Tamboerskloof and at the end of June 1986, I moved in. We felt gloriously blessed. Our wedding and honeymoon cost us very little. We had an afternoon tea for the wedding, costing R2-50 per head. There were about 180 people there.
Friends offered us their holiday house both in Betty’s Bay and in the Wilderness. We stayed with Mike’s uncle outside Knysna and had one night at Carmel. Beyond that we had 5 nights hiking the Otter Trail. I look back on our engagement, wedding and honeymoon with a full heart. It was such a blessed time. We returned after two weeks away ready to enjoy married life. I found a new job as a qualified sister at the Leeuwendal private hospital and Mike continued to work at the Y.
However, things were going to change. The Lord was working a new plan and one that we were not so sure about. It’s easier to go into Christian ministry that to get out and yet an unexpected door opened for Mike to walk right through. That’s for tomorrow.
Psalm 32:7
You are my hiding place; you shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
Amen.
These are the days!
Keep the smile going.
God bless you.
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
