Remembering Ma

Friday

Today was the day…

I remembered my dear Ma who passed away 18 years ago today. A never to be forgotten day and  moment in time when she slipped from this life to the next. Always a poignant day. She was not yet 72. One of the things that always amazes me when this day comes around are the words of Psalm 23. We read it at her bedside in those final moments of her life. It was on the service sheet at her memorial service. And, it is remarkably the psalm for the 28th January in my ‘read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year’ plan. Only the Lord knew it would be there. We fear no evil. The Lord is with us. His rod and His staff comforts us. Here’s Ma with my nephew. She loved being a Granny.

Ma would have liked what I did today. She would have enjoyed it too. Remember this:

I had a bath. I put the jets on and had a good soak. Then I turned them off and sat in the silence.  So relaxing.

The 5 things I could see. The last of the swimmers enjoying the warm but choppy waves;  a dog walker or two taking a sunset stroll;  Clovelly golf club  bathed in golden rays; the mountains; the trees blowing in the wind.

The 4 things I could touch – the tap, the end of the bath, my knees, my towel.

The 3 things I could hear – the TV in the distance;  the clock ticking; the water lapping.

The 2 things I could smell – the soap and the aromatic smell of Julian’s apartment – a mix of leather, wood and books.

The 1 thing I could taste – lingering taste of desert – ice cream.

Ma would have loved the bath!

I’m not sure she would have been an eager sea swimmer, but the day was perfectly still and a swim was essential. Ma loved the beach, but just sitting on the bench watching the world go by. I was part of the world. I swam to the lighthouse, quickly turning back when I hit the fishermen’s rope. Half way back, Mike appeared. I swam for a little longer. The water was beautifully warm. At least 19C. Afterwards, Mike and I watched the trek fishermen pulling in their catch. We didn’t wait for the fish to arrive as it began to drizzle.

We walked home as quickly and most directly as we could. A hot shower followed, breakfast and work.

It was a good day.

Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want. He restores my soul.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
