How Many Does it Take to Catch a Seal?

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Yesterday, it was a penguin; today it was a seal! The Fish Hoek seals have been worrying the locals because over the last year or two,  they have occasionally taken to attacking people. An innocent swimmer was bitten; a cleaner was nipped and a minding-their-own business walker was chased down and angrily attacked. (See this story https://www.news24.com/you/news/local/woman-tells-of-horror-fish-hoek-seal-attack-it-was-on-me-before-i-knew-it-20221028-2)

So when a seal finds its way onto the cat walk, it needs to be treated with caution. This one was living its best life…just lying in the morning sun ignoring passers by.

But when the seal catching team arrived, they cordoned off the section of cat walk and walkers had to find another way. All these men in the photo were part of the team.

They ignored the seal and the seal ignored them, but they still wouldn’t let us walk past. I had to walk into the water, up the rocks and then onto the cat walk.

Apparently they were waiting for a net to arrive. The seal seemed to be waiting for the tide to come in. He was oblivious to his impending fate. Even if the seal went into the sea, I was told, the team would fish it out and move it away. Well, we couldn’t stay to watch the fun, but I do believe it takes about 11 men to catch a seal.

On the animal front, just look at how big Raiku has got.

This was just after we got them 4 months ago…Today in the cricket world cup Afghanistan are playing Australia and the contest is surprising. It looks at this stage that Afghanistan will win.

We need to be vigilant. We play Afghanistan on Friday!

An early blog.

It Takes 4 People to Catch a Penguin

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I watched a penguin being caught. I was in the sea, so didn’t have my cell phone available to take photos. When we walked down to the beach this morning, there was apparently a stray penguin hanging about just off the cat walk. We didn’t see it, but it would have looked like this.

Someone must have reported it because by the time I got in the water and was almost out by the barrel, there was a man and his helper on the cat walk. He was on the phone & then waving madly to someone near the beach. I thought, at first, he was a shark-spotter supervisor because the net guys were busy putting the net out. I carried on with my swim, going back to the beach, meeting Mike and then swimming out again. It was then I noticed the 2 had become 4. Two ladies had joined the party. One of the men then stepped off the cat walk. The guys in the boat putting out the net were close by and watching with interest. I asked them what was going on and they said, ‘they’re trying to catch a penguin.’  I watched the man creep across the rock trying not to freak the penguin out. Eventually, he took a step forward and scooped the penguin up in his gloved hands and passed it to the lady who put it in the penguin box. It was then carried off to safety.

And that’s how I came to learn it takes 4 people to catch a penguin.

I worked 6 hours. I had a haircut. I got up way too early, but got to see a beautiful sunrise. 5.31am

59th Birthday

Sunday

Dear Elsie

As you know, today was my birthday! It was lovely to see you on our video call and to speak to you. You are such a joy!

My birthday began early with me getting up, feeding the cats and letting them out. And then, in the quiet of the morning, I made myself coffee and sat in my rocking chair enjoying the early morning.

Contentment.

It is a word, I kept coming back to today. I’ve been thinking about it recently and reminding myself that it is learned. Sitting in my rocking chair and appreciating the morning, birthday or not, is part of the contentment learning process.

Today I felt content. I’ve made it to 59! We never know when our last day on earth will be, so I appreciate getting to this one. And I will appreciate turning 59 & 1 day as well. This has been my state of mind today & it is blessed. I’m looking forward to the year ahead.

Last night Julian took us out for dinner and I chose Bertha’s in Simon’s Town (they support Living Hope). As we were leaving, just look at the sunset. No filter!

Too beautiful. This morning, apart from his gift, Mike gave me this encouragement.

(Ron Wesson’s book Everlasting Arms). A wonderful message for me to take into this next year.

We went to the beach for a swim and then had a chance to sit on the bench, watch the world go by and soak up some sunshine. We watched the shark spotters putting out the net.

Home for (rather sad) cricket and family time. This afternoon we had a braai (without the fire) and then Julian and I walked to the end of the beach and back, enjoying the activities as we went. Trek fishermen finishing their day’s work…

A guy and his kite…

On our way back, he had finally got it into the sky…

We turned off and walked through the red-roof houses and back round to the cat walk. We also sat for a few minutes on the bench and watched the shark spotters begin to bring in the net. They put it out at about 8am and bought it in at 5pm.

A beautiful day.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

I Haven’t Done This for Years

Saturday

Dear Elsie,

It was a good day today and speaking to you made it more special. I’m looking forward to getting the picture you have made for me. As for me, I had a very chilled day….a little literally because we went to the beach and the water was c-o-l-d! It must have been about 14C. This is what happens when the north wind blows. This afternoon the wind is from the south-east so I’m hoping it will warm up in time for my morning swim tomorrow.

Two cricket matches today. New Zealand played a Pakistan, packing on the runs and scoring a scintillating 401 runs before rain interrupted play. Pakistan, fearing rain would reduce their chances of a win, blasted the ball all over the park. When it did indeed rain, Pakistan’s strategy worked and they won. This was good for South Africa as it means we have qualified for the semis.

I was soooo hoping England would beat Australia and they may still pull a rabbit out the hat, but it’s not looking too good.

While the cricket was on, I sat on the floor and did something I haven’t done for years. I built a card house. They don’t make playing cards like they used to. I couldn’t get very high. First I managed 2 storeys …

And then after a few attempts managed to get up to 3 and a bit…

Before this happened…

When we were kids we used to build card houses and I remember my sister Anne getting up to 10 storeys. It was fun to try again, but I need a decent pack of cards.

A restful day.

Isaiah 35:3-4
Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way;
say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,  He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you.”

See the bigger picture.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Gran xx 🙂

Doing Things Slightly Differently

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today dawned surprisingly overcast. The sea was calm and there was very little wind. So I started the day by doing things slightly differently and having my cappuccino out on the balcony. It was a quiet and peaceful time. After a while, I went back inside retreating to my rocking chair. David came up and we had our morning visit with him. Mike and I were debating about going to the beach, but the cloud made us reconsider. I went out onto the balcony again and immediately heard a jet liner overhead. I rushed in to get my cell phone to take a photo. By then it was over the bay.

It was Virgin air on their final approach after an overnight flight from London. They had left 11 hours 34 minutes before. I love watching planes.

With it beginning to drip, we decided not to go swimming but to walk to Fish Hoek for pawpaw (still on the hunt!) Our mission complete, the drizzle had turned to rain. Along the cat walk, the die-hards were in the water….

The nets were being deployed…

The walk home was damp but picturesque –  always something to see even from under an umbrella.

The day turned sunny and fair and the beach was a great place to be. It was good the shark nets were in place as we heard the shark siren go off twice during the morning. We need those nets.

Home for breakfast, happy to have paw paw back in the bowl.

Julian worked too. Someone sent him this picture – perfect illustration!

I took a chunk of the afternoon off. We went shopping and then I sat in my rocking chair doing a word game and listening to (your Mom) Stacey’s live YouTube stream. Such talent!

This evening, I’ve also done things slightly differently. Instead of doing my blog before getting ready for bed, I got ready for bed first and then took my lap top with me. I’m snuggled up in bed finishing it off.

Finally, today I was reminded of where we were 10 years ago today on 3rd November 2013. Florence, Italy! Sunset over the River Arno.

I’m pleased Facebook reminded me of this photo because somehow my blogs from our 2013 trip got lost when we swapped servers. Looking back ten years always reminds me that, like some of the forgotten joys of the past,  the stresses of today will be swallowed up in the years to come.

Quintessential Fish Hoek

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was quite a busy day. Julian was taken up completing the collection of his consignment of books. Mike had some shopping to do and then had to take plumbing pipes back and order others. I worked. I had a few meetings and guests arriving, so was kept on my toes.

David went for a drive and had two visitors, so he had a pretty busy day as well.

While the day was warm today, it was overcast and cooler in the afternoon. Julian and I decided to head for the beach and walk to the little lighthouse and back. I took a few photos of what is quintessential Fish Hoek…

These photos really warm my heart. Fish Hoek is such a special place and we are blessed to live here and have this beach close by.

The cricket today was between Sri Lanka and India – a thoroughly one-sided affair.

We play India on Sunday! 😬 Hopefully we’ll put up more resistance. At the moment the prediction is India will win!

Tomorrow is Friday! Weekend!

The Main Event of the Day

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we went to the beach for a swim. While there wasn’t too much wind, there was a bit of swell. The water clear, clean and warm. There was very little seaweed and kelp and no jellyfish. I really enjoyed my swim.

When we got home, we were met by a ‘gift’ from the cats. It resulted in me needing to do a bit of cleaning up. It was quite gross to be honest,  so I’ll leave it there. It would be much better if they kept their gifts to themselves and didn’t bring them into the house!

But the main event of the day was the cricket. At the beach this morning, I brightly and boldly declared this day, 1st November 2023, was the day the Proteas beat New Zealand for the 2nd time in a week.

That result sent us to the top of the table.

Next up, we play India on Sunday. That’s going to be a cracker of a match. South Africa have never played in a World Cup ODI final. Perhaps this is our year.

I worked just over 6 hours. Julian arrived and tomorrow will be a busy day for both of us! Jessica sent me this photo of Elizabeth just about crawling.

Later today, she got it right and managed to carry herself a few knee steps across the floor!

After David’s relapse, he is slowly trying to regain his strength. He drove to Newlands Forest but only walked 100m. He did manage to get out this evening to go to a church meeting. He’s been on the anti-coagulants for nearly 6 months and we are beginning to unfortunately conclude, the treatment has not worked as expected. We are waiting for the next medication to see if adding that makes a difference.

Isaiah 33:2
Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you.
Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

The Great Rock Attack

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we set about attacking a massive rock out back. This rock has long been under discussion. It  needs to go, but we are not sure how.

Much internet research has been done. The guys took the big tough chisel and mallet bought for the purpose. Mike explained how it should be done. This is where the rock is from the balcony…

Mike left them reigning down massive blows, only to return a few hours later to see this…

Onto the next crevice…

And by the time they went home we had the rock about a third smaller!

That’s how you break a rock! Well done guys!

The day actually began with Mike and I going on a hunt for pawpaw. We walked to the shops and not finding any at PnP, we went to Woolworths which was closed, so it was onto Shoprite which had none. Freshstop were out and the Cafe on the Main rd was too. No pawpaw for me. After work, I took off for Harbour Bay and also found no pawpaw at Woolies or PnP so berries and  yoghurt for breakfast until they come back into stock again.

We had a good walk though, which included conquering the (150) Zoutendyk Steps. Shew!

And home along Daisy Lane…

It was a solid 4km walk.

Cats today – a 2-lizard day. Both survived. When releasing one of the lizards, I found a porcupine quill, so we have those spiky ones mooching around the mountainside.

The last day of October 2023.

It Was a 1-Lizard Day

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that I worked 9 hours and the cats caught only 1 lizard. They get terribly excited over this new-found ability of being able to track down ‘wild’ life around the house. I only realised what was going on when I heard much scratching and scuffling. Then I spotted Claw’d with something in his mouth. I rushed to try to save the little critter but Claw’d would have none of it. Eventually, I got out the snacks and pretended to get out a snack so he would drop it. My ploy worked. The little black lizard fell to the floor. I dropped a drying up cloth over it, scooped up the cats and closed them in the study. After putting the lizard ,which had survived the ordeal, in a bowl, I took it outside and let it go.

Then I let the cats out and they spent the next several minutes looking for their missing prey.

Naughty cats.

While talking of the cats, they have been enjoying limited TV time.

And the wind has continued to howl. I took this photo yesterday but today is no different. We are hoping it will die down a bit tomorrow.

So that’s Monday and I’m grateful for it. The Lord’s mercies are new every morning. The other thing about today is it’s Julian’s birthday! Happy happy birthday Julian!

Isaiah 30:18
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;  therefore He will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

We Won! We Won! We Won!

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Last night we went to bed jubilant! We won the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The wind was howling outside. I went out on the balcony and roared a loud cry of relief – it was whisked away by the wind, but I found I was not alone. Other shouts of victory swept across the valley. What a win. And after posting a message yesterday…

…they didn’t get the message.

The game began in the dressing room. While the All Blacks prepared for their Haka, the Springboks had a prayer.

Win or lose, it was in God’s hands now.

The battle was fierce & it was not without controversy. The nerves were telling. With less than a minute to go, Cheslyn Kolbe (in the sin-bin) couldn’t watch. My nerves were shot!

It was so tense, but victory was ours & the celebration was sweet…

So that’s 4.

The Kolisi family celebrating on the field, with the cup, in the rain. Nothing would dampen anyone’s mood.

It was fun today walking through Checkers and seeing people from all walks of life with Springbok shirts on. Everyone was still excited. We walked to Fish Hoek in the howling wind and bought the newspaper.

And after this historic sporting win, I was reminded that we are just a moment in time. In the newspaper, I read some of the things that happened on this day during the course of history. Way back on 29th October 312,  Constantine the Great entered Rome. This was after his victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge against Maxentius the previous day. He was met with popular jubilation.  The battled marked the beginning of Constantine’s conversion to Christianity and he was the first emperor to do so.  Study.com says this…

The rugby battle of last night doesn’t have the lasting significance that the Battle of Milvian Bridge did 1711 years ago.

The God we serve is the same one who bought Constantine through his battle. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. We can trust Him regardless of our circumstances, be they winning (or losing) the World Cup, in sickness and in health, in good times and hard. He’s the same. He’s our Foundation – the Rock on Whom we build our life. It will all be okay because of Him.

Isaiah 30:15
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength….”

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Rugby World Cup Final 2023

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we woke early, went for a lovely walk with you, had flapjacks for breakfast and by 8am, we said goodbye and headed home. We had such a lovely time and will be back. Thank you for having us and for all the voice notes!

The drive home was easy with far less traffic than going. We got home in three hours and jumped into unpacking and getting ready for the weekend. Ruth was here cleaning the Seaview Apartment so that’s ready for the next guests, who, unless anything changes, only arrive on Thursday.

Most of South Africa is gearing up for the Rugby World Cup final which is on at 9pm tonight.

I think I will get some shut eye in so I can see the whole game…maybe. I feel I should.

Meanwhile, David had a couple of visitors today. I got a photo of 3 men and a baby. Just for clarity, the baby belongs to Mike A who is in the middle. Mike D is holding little Maya for ‘practice’ as his newborn son is due in December.

Straight after I took the photo, I went for a walk down Highway, up & then down Hillside to Ravine steps. As if 85 steps is not enough…

Over Highway to the rest of Ravine steps…in the bag…almost…

Then along the road to a few more rugged steps…

Then it’s a short mountain path – believe me after the puff adder visit the other day, I walked with my eyes wide open…

It comes out at the top of Contour Rd which has sweeping views…

And an 8-bed house that was on the market for R18m…although the For Sale sign has been taken down.

That was a good walk on a windy day.

And now the 3 hour count-down begins.

CNN reported on Siya Kolisi’s comments prior to tonight’s match.

Isaiah 29:16
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”?

One thing we know about Siya Kolisi is he trusts the Lord. He knows who made him and he is accountable to Him, even in a rugby match. Win or lose, life goes on.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Grandparent’s Day – A Blog by Elsie and Granny

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we went to your school’s Grandparent’s Day! How fun was that? We had a good time.  There were beautifully laid tables…

Lots of grandparents…

Plus of course, plenty of  yummy treats…

This is also the first time that you are watching me writing this blog. You have asked why I put … at the end of yummy treats! I said to show you something else was coming. Today you painted a wooden house which was made into a keyring, which you gave to Oupa, who loved it.

We had lots of photos taken with you. You also asked why I do not show your face. I explained it’s because we need to wait for you to be big enough to decide for yourself where your face is shown. Another question you asked was ‘why do you write so many things?’ To this I answered it’s because one day you won’t only be 5, you’ll grow up and then you’ll have an account of all the things that Granny and Grandpa did.

What I did learn today is you are very smart and good at counting. We are now home and you have been playing with your Duplo…

The Duplo is an endless source of entertainment with a bath, beds, cars, kitchen & stairs going up to a dog ‘tree-top’ house (Elsie’s definition). There is loads of imagination going on with stories being told, as there is a swing and a slide and a rocking horse and a playground.  There’s a teacher and class and actually 2 naughty boys. (Elsie’s dictation). You have also just said that you Elsie, can spell all of your family’s names (and why don’t I write that down on my computer!), so there it is!

It’s been delightful being here for sure!

Isaiah 28:29
All this also comes from the Lord Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Cappuccino, Puff Adder & Road Trip

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that featured a cappuccino, a puff adder and a road trip.

Let me start, my darling one, of saying how excited I am to be writing this from your house this evening! Yes, I’m sleeping over. I cannot believe how much you have grown in leaps and bounds over the last few months. Your vocabulary has expanded so much both in English and Afrikaans and you are reading so well.

So our road trip ended here. It was via Worcester because there is a stretch of the N2 that is closed and this was was the simplest. It took us longer, but some of the passing countryside is majestic.

The day began with a swim at Fish Hoek beach. Today was the perfect day for it. The sea was flat and warm…it must have been about 17C. I did a good amount of swimming and it was the best this year, I think.  We got home and had breakfast. Then I had to jump to, because not only did I have a meeting, but right after it, we were planning on driving out of town. Mike went out to buy a few things. Courage came in to do something and I mentioned to him that in the three years he has been working for us, he has never made me a cappuccino (on weekends he sometimes is a barista). I said I’d make the shot if he did the milk. He washed his hands and got on with the job…

Voila!

I’m going to be hard pressed not to take advantage of this talent of his in the future!

Courage went back to work and minutes later came back in, “Helga! Are you working?” he asked. “Come and see this big snake.” I went outside and there was a snake I didn’t want to see. I don’t know snakes, so put the pic up on our local whatsapp group for a snake id.

Mike would have known it was a puff adder but he was out. The whatsapp group soon confirmed and I contacted the snake man. He was not available so he got onto the snake catchers group and had someone phone me. Leo pitched up half an hour later…once he lured the snake towards his bucket, it took 10 seconds…

And the snake was in the bucket…

We paid him R300 and off he went to let the snake loose further up the mountain. I hope he doesn’t find his way back. We have been here 3 years and this is the first major snake that has graced us with his presence. Others have been small and insignificant.  I don’t want the cats to encounter any snakes. Talking of the cats, David is back home looking after my boys. Claw’d settled down on David’s lap, so David got out his lap top and put on some cat entertainment. Ha ha! Claw’d was taken in…

Too funny!

And so a busy day has ended but it’s great to be with the family for a couple of nights.

Isaiah 28:16
So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Carrying Sand

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was a warm and sunny day. We had a sand delivery and Brian, Courage’s handlanger, was assigned the task of carrying the sand in bucket loads up the 99 stairs to the top. He is so strong. He carries a big bucket, one after the other, on and on for the entire morning until eventually all the sand is at the top of the stairs.

We decided to get some exercise and join him. I claimed I’d take 10 loads. My bucket was a small one. It took me 20 minutes to do 5 loads and by then I was finished! Brian appreciated our help.

I was not built to do this, but it’s very good exercise.

My heart rate went up to 177. It was a relief to get back to  my paying job!

Meantime, these two…Day time cat-napping!

A few minutes after this photo was taken, Raiku woke up and with renewed energy and zest walked across to Claw’d and stood on his head to get to the top platform. Claw’d was furious and batted him along with a scowl of displeasure. Raiku is the jester for sure.

I worked 9 hours. We did some shopping and amazingly, the glazing guy came this evening and stamped all the windows/doors that have safety glass. We were happy about that. Another step to our occupation certificate,

David has been terrible the last few days. This morning, I sat in my rocking chair and had a fleeting sense that everything will be okay. He’s going to get better. We just have to keep moving forward, one day at a time. Today was really awful for him. He’s feeling so flat, without energy and with renewed muscle pain and heart palpitations.  All I can imagine is that the microclots are breaking down and releasing toxins. He’s supposed to get worse before he gets better.

Isaiah 26:12
Lord, You establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished You have done for us.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂

Another Box Ticked

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we finally got another box ticked. The building inspector approved of the plumbing in the plot behind and Courage and Brian can now continue the stairs.

Julian and Gerrie flew back to Johannesburg. David had a quiet day. He seems to have had a bit of a relapse, which is pretty much in keeping with the sudden increase in microclots. He has been extremely tired today with worse than normal fatigue. He took it very easy and did get to enjoy the cricket. South Africa played Bangladesh and beat them soundly.

I also had a visit from Riana – it was nice to catch up.

I worked about 7 hours after which I walked to the end of the road and back and then sat on the balcony and enjoyed the view.

For the rest of the week, we have the windows guy coming (hopefully) tomorrow and then Thursday we head to Swellendam.  We are looking forward to that!

Isaiah 26:9
My soul yearns for You in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for You.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
