Mike is playing in his company’s golf competition today. Last year his department won it and so today they defend their title. I’m going along for the ride.
In golf, you get better with practice but you need concentration and patience every time you play. It’s absolutely not as easy as it looks.
One thing I’ve found myself saying when caddying for Mike is something like, ‘don’t worry, you’ll always have the birdie at the 3rd’ – amidst the wayward shots, there are strokes of brilliance, where the ball magically lands on the green and trickles towards the hole as if it knows exactly where to go. Those shots keep you coming back for more. Those are the shots you remember. You dwell on the perfection of them and smile at the memory. While there are always holes that are bombed out on, there’s always a couple that are sheer brilliance.
While it’s not nice to have a horrible round, you have to look for the good in each game.
And so it is with life.
As the years pass by, I can always look back at the bad stuff, but I prefer to look back at the good stuff. “I’ll always have” stuff. And when I do look back and count up all the good things, I am humbled that there is so much of it.
So when life gets a bit iffy, traumatic or painful, look back – glance over your shoulder at the good things, the happy things and the sparks of sheer enjoyment and gladness that have lit up your life. Dwell on those things.
In a world marked by turmoil, tragedy and pain, from the fall of Adam until now, we need to focus on the good.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.
Today there will be bogeys – yes there will. I’m hoping there will be a number of pars and if amid the 18 holes there is a birdie, it will be sweet and memorable and have us coming back for more.
Off to golf I go. Not to play but as support staff! It’s going to be a good day.
