Mike Said He’d Do It When He Retired….

The postbox slowly fell apart. In its 20 year life, it was repaired once or twice. Wasps moved in. The neighbourhood children came across one day to ask for a ball that had been kicked into our garden. They commented on a wasp that came out of the post-box.

Some people have dogs. We have guard wasps!

Wasps

It was time for  new postbox. Comments were made.  Time passed.

Mike said he’d do it when he retired.

That was probably the most commonly used phrase in our house.

I would say, “you can do it when you are retired.”

Mike would say, “I’ll do it when I’m retired, God willing!”

The children would say, “Dad when you are retired you can do this or that…”

One windy night the door of the postbox blew off and broke. The wasp nest fell to the bottom of it and they eventually dispersed.

Well guess what? Mike said he’d do it when he retired.

And he did.

This morning, this is what he put up…New postbox

I whatsapped the picture  my friend and she sent this back…

Mike has been retired for almost 6 weeks…. 6 glorious weeks. He is so grateful. It’s wonderful!

It’s like Christmas having him home. I feel happy every day. Mike’s home. No tiresome trips in and out of Cape Town. No daily struggles with the traffic. No office issues.

He can say, “guess what happened at work today?”

Answer: “NOTHING!!”

I was thinking this morning how last year we went through the year remembering that it was 2015. Mike turned 64. I was born in ’64. I turned 51. Mike was born in ’51.

This year we are going through the year with this on our hearts – we have been together 30 years.

30.

3 Decades.

What a treat.

We had a conversation this morning. Mike made a comment on what a wonderful wife I am. I responded by saying the only reason he thinks I am so wonderful is because he has spent 30 years nurturing me….encouraging me, supporting me, building me up, complimenting me, affirming me. I was a little flower given to Mike to take care of. He made sure I was watered and nurtured and fertilized and loved and cherished.

That didn’t need to wait until he retired.

He did that from the first day of our relationship.

1 Peter 3:7

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honour to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

It’s not difficult to love Mike.

🙂

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
