Martha Arrived

Tuesday

Today was the day…

I took Julian to the airport, then did a loop from the N2 to the N1 and went to Plattekloof to pick up Martha! I’m always one for naming inanimate objects. In  maybe 30 years time, if Elsie ever gets to scroll through the daily ramblings of her Granny, she may arrive at this entry and smile to herself, remembering well growing up with Martha around. I picked up Martha and she sat very still and quiet in the front seat of the car. She didn’t say a word on the way home. Not a peep. It’s a bit tricky to speak when you don’t have a mouth!  I didn’t even know she was there. When we got home, Mike suggested I put her in the garage so that’s where she is spending the night. I’m a bit worried that she may get dusty, so I think I’ll visit her in the morning and cover her.

This. Is. Martha.

She is Martha the Mannequin. Actually she is a Dress-making doll and once assembled, she’ll look like this…

She’s in immaculate condition. I think Stacey will be thrilled. Stacey makes just about all of Elsie’s clothes and has been making most of her own as well. She is a prolific sewer. She has an industrial sewing machine and a fabulous overlocker and she can make the most amazing things….like this….a leather handbag she made with offcuts of leather from when she made covers for the cottage couch.

Mike’s Mom would be thrilled if she could see Stacey and her sewing. Anyway, Martha was purchased and will make her way to Swellendam and live out her days in Stacey’s sewing room.

Mike and I began the day with our usual trip to the beach. I investigated the seaweed that touched my leg yesterday. It has a long thick stalk with a paddle like head and it was the head that slapped itself against my leg. I swam further along the cat walk than I’ve ever swum before. The tide was super low and under water visibility really good. The water temperature was 15.9C so it wasn’t too cold. When I got out, I had an elderly man come up to me and ask, “Are you the long distance swimmer my son told me about?” Ha ha! Nope!

With the coming and going, I’ve only done about 4 hours of work today. I’ll catch up tomorrow.

Jude 25

All glory to Him who alone is God, our Saviour through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The best is set to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
