2-32pm
I’m sitting watching Channel 199, the Oscar Pistorius trial. They say it will take three weeks. It is gripping to be a spectator to the law unfolding in South Africa. I can imagine that after a while it maybecome tiresome
At the moment a neighbour of Oscar Pistorius is in the witness box. Her name is Michelle Burger and she was woken in the early hours of 14th February last year to the petrified screams of a woman. Barry Roux is the defence advocate and this afternoon he has Michelle under cross examination. You have to feel for this woman. He is leaving no stone unturned and is picking apart everything she is saying. It is chilling evidence of her telling of her hearing the final moments of Reeva Steenkamp’s life. She says the screams were of someone whose life was threatened…. they were blood curdling. The defence attorney is suggesting that the female voice could possibly have been Oscar with a high pitched scream, specially heard from 177m away. Bit by bit, blow by blow, moment by moment each second of what happened is being examined.Oscar has pleaded not guilty to the charges of premeditated murder claiming that it was a tragic accident in a case of mistaken identity, claiming he thought Reeva was an intruder.
There are no winners here. It’s just so sad. A life is cut short. Two families are shattered. Oscar’s life will never be the same again. We’ll wait and see what happens next.
It’s good to remember that as we judge, so we will be judged. Part of the Lord’s prayer is forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Jesus asks a very pertinent question in Mark 8: 36
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
This life is just a grain of sand. The rest of the desert is eternity. There is a lot of it to come after we die. Live life with eternity in mind.
