Golf at Steenberg Estate

I’ve had to give quite a lot of thought to what I write about our golfing experience at Steenberg Estate. The golf was great.   I have driven past it multitudes of times. Situated on Steenberg Road, opposite the US Embassy, Steenberg shopping complex, Reddam and Pollsmoor Prison, Steenberg Golf Course is part of the historic Steenberg farm, described as the Cape’s oldest farm, established in 1682.

I have to say that we had a wonderful afternoon golf. I can’t say that enough times. We really enjoyed it. However, we just felt that as a 5 star estate, there were a few things lacking, in our experience.

The farm’s website has a note that the Golf club is open to the public, but preference is given to estate residents/members and hotel guests. With that policy in place, as we are neither, our reception was luke warm. This round was a gift from Julian – when we presented the gift card at the reception, they didn’t know what to do with it.

There is no official starter. In the end we found a guy wandering around the 10th hole with a clipboard in his hand.  This is where Westlake Golf club shines. There is so much organisation, you can’t miss it. Westlake are really geared up for visitors. Steenberg, not so much and I guess they don’t need to be.

It’s quite tricky coming as a visitor as there is no map of the course on the score card and even on the tee boxes, there’s no picture of what the hole looks like, so if we couldn’t see the players ahead of us, it would have been very difficult knowing where the heck to go!

Recently the greens were redone and only reopened on 10th December. The fairways were in average condition – a bit patchy in places –  not the spectacularly lush fairways we are used to at Clovelly.

That’s all the negative and they are temporary negative because if we ever do play there again, we will know the layout and hopefully will be more warmly received.

The locker rooms are beautiful. There are useful extras such as sunblock, hand cream, and a few other toiletries which are helpful if you leave yours behind.

The views from course are spectacular, surrounded by mountains, there’s always something amazing to see. This is Elephant’s Eye and Constantiaberg…

The back of Table Mountain..

We took our time at half-way house and had a bite to eat. It made for a lovely afternoon and we got home after 6pm

I think if I had to grade it, it would look like this:

  • Welcome  2/5
  • Map for visitors 1/5
  • Fairways 3/5
  • Greens 4/5
  • Locker-rooms 5/5
  • Overall 3/5

Anyway, we loved playing the course! 🙂 and we enjoyed the free tees (pegs)

Today has been a quieter day with some work done, some shopping done and now we are looking forward to Julian arriving for Christmas!

#137 of my 1000 thanks – that we were able to get a lot of groceries this morning in a not too packed shopping mall. 🙂 It’s going to be a wonderful weekend.

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

These are the days!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
