Carbs vss Net Carbs

1-35pm

Yesterday, after I mentioned the high amount of carbohydrates in almonds, I asked for anyone who may be able to explain it. I had a couple of responses, but I didn’t realise that in order to solve the mystery, I would get so close to home. My one and only, bestest ever, daughter, Stacey whatsapped me with the answer.

Screenshot_2014-06-24-13-47-09Thanks Stace! I love that Stacey reads my blog and responds. Credit has to go to David as well, in this instance. He googled how to do a ‘screen shot’ with my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. So simple, when you know how. (Okay! I know you want to know now….all you do is hold the power button and home button down simultaneously and it takes a pic of the screen! Then go to the gallery and you’ll find it there. )

So that’s the almond answer – you’ve got to know the fibre value and subtract that from the whole carb total to get ‘net carbs’. At the website: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/products/a/netcarbs.htm, I read that fibre is not digested in the small intestine and so it isn’t broken down into glucose and absorbed by the blood.

AlmondsYou can apply it to any other food stuffs as well, but take care. It seems it’s a clever way for the marketers of some packaged food to lure you into believing you are eating less carbs than you are, or that the net carb value won’t affect your blood sugar. That may not be the case.
Unfortunately in our time pressed lives, it’s difficult to do the research on everything we eat, but we will be well rewarded if we are able to.Stace also mentioned the high calorie content of almonds, which brings to mind the need to be careful. If you are eating LCHF to lose weight, there has to be some calorie reduction as well. Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full.

I’ve noticed people are keen to find out about peanut butter is okay for Banting followers. Fatsecret.com says this:Peanut butterSo, it’s do-able if you don’t mind the fact that they use sunflower oil in the processing of it, and that’s not great! Everything in moderation, I say. There has to be a balance.

On a personal note, I’m in my 4th week of being a housewife. Yesterday, I had a momentary thought that perhaps the honeymoon period is wearing off! Before I stopped working, I was a little nervous about how I would cope being a housewife! It was almost as if God was setting me aside, quietening me down, taking away my significance in order to focus more on Him. It’s a privileged time in my life. I regularly get messages of people saying, “I hope you are enjoying your new ‘venture.’!” They don’t understand there is no new ‘venture.’ It’s just me at home, doing dishes, laundry and cleaning! If there is a venture, it is more of an ‘adventure’ – going deeper, seeing if you can be extraordinarily happy even if your daily activities are mundane. And again it comes back to what happens when Mike walks out the door at something to 6am and I am left with the decision to either turn off the light, or turn on my prayer time. If I choose the latter, I am rewarded every day. I come away renewed, with a deep contentment and enthusiasm that keeps the smile going. It doesn’t come because Mike loves me. It doesn’t come because I have a roof over my head. It comes because I have had an encounter with God and He has sent His Holy Spirit to fill and envelop me. He is gracious and compassionate and constant and His mercies are new every morning.

He is enough.

Regardless.

And so I keep the smile going.

Proverbs 17:22

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
