It’s funny how a whiff of something can take you back to a bygone era. I had one of those this morning. After the beautiful rain last night, this morning was fresh and overcast. I went down to the Noordhoek Farm Village to pick something up. As I stepped out of the car, the fresh air was reminiscent of a visit I once had to the Vumba mountains in the Eastern Highlands of what was then Rhodesia in about 1969. I must have been about five years old when we took a family holiday to the area. Â Mountain mist hung over the valley and the moisture in the air and laden on the surrounding trees and shrubs gave rise to a sweet fresh scent that came flooding back to me this morning.
It’s funny how certain aromas do that. I smelled a deodorant the other day that took me back to me teens. And I once walked into a building that smelled distinctly like the office block at Somerset Hospital in 1983.
As I walked back into the house, the scent of the bubbling rich brown stew I had put in the slow cooker rose to meet me at the door. While we can live without our sense of smell, it’s amazing how much we use it.
It’s so interesting then that the Bible says we ourselves are an aroma too.
2 Corinthians 2:15
For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
How do I smell?
I hope that I am a pleasing aroma.
It’s hard to tell. I think sometimes I’m not.
It’s a disturbing thought and one that bears thinking about.
As I leave my fingerprints on this world, I hope to leave a sweet lingering scent that may fade but will not be forgotten.
The day has been a relaxing one. The cold I spoke of yesterday developed into a bit of a cough and a streaming nose. Today I think I am a little better.
#314 of my 1000 thanks is for this cold I have – it will build up my resistance to enable me to have the immunity against another one!
The rain was wonderful, but it ended only after an hour or two. Mike and I took a walk to the watering hole at the bottom of Sun Valley to see if there was even a puddle in it. But it was still very very dry.
But don’t worry – there is more rain on its way.
These are the days!
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
