4 Years Ago & 3 Years Ago

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day we had a guest check out and we needed to clean the Seaview apartment before the next guests arrive tomorrow. We also had one of January’s guests arrive to see the cottage. She loved it and is excited to be coming for a couple of months. After the clean and the visit, I did a load of laundry. I grabbed everything in the basket and pushed it into the washing machine as I have done 100 times before. Only, unbeknown to me, there was something caught up in the wash – paper towel perhaps – but a chunk of it and it got finely shredded through the duvet cover, sheets and pillow cases. This drying up cloth seemed to be closest to it. All that white, is paper!

Perhaps later this week, I’ll toss the rest of the linen back in for round two. There’s no great rush for it.

On the sports front, the big upset of the day was Afghanistan beating England in a Cricket World Cup match. England saved face by beating Fiji in the rugby. Afghanistan had until today, only one 1 World Cup match ever before. Today was their second, so they must be elated. England have now placed 3 and won 1. Afghanistan moving up the table, leave Australia at the bottom. That will change when Australia play another minnow. We play Netherlands on Tuesday. We need to keep up our guard. These upsets can happen.

But the big reminder today was from Google, telling me what was happening 4 years ago today and 3 years ago today.

4 years, in 2019, foundations were being dug and the groundworks being done. This was by what is now our front door. I remember saying at the time, ‘this is where the front door will be..’ Oct 15th 2019…

Fast forward 1 full year from then to October 15th 2020, and this is what was happening…we were moving.

The front entrance left much to be desired. This was a month before…

All those rocks became walls.

We slept our first night in our new home on the 16th October 2020. I remember that night so well. So very strange to be in a new house, high up on the mountainside. After 30 years in the same home, to be in the newly built one – the one that we  had watched go up bit by bit – was unexpected. The new view was extraordinary & the idea that this would be what we called ‘home’ was quite astonishing. I hardly slept that night. I lay awake in awe, dozing on and off, waking in wonderment to the sight of the sea and distant twinkling lights. Finally at about 2am, I fell asleep. When I woke up, the sea was still there. For at the first week, that was what I thought when I woke up, ‘the sea is still there!’ I was like a child. And I have to admit, the joy and pleasure remain. We have not got used to this. It is enhanced by the coming and going of guests. They love the view and the closeness of the ocean and when they leave, we get to stay.

I worked a couple of hours this afternoon and now am going to see if I can stay awake for the rugby. That will be a long shot, but we’ll see.

Isaiah 25:1
Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your Name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvellous things, things planned long ago.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx 🙂
