Yesterday’s Roller-Coaster Ride

12-00

One thing I decided after yesterday’s amazing roller-coaster ride is that golf is NOT an easy game to play! It was the City of Cape Town’s corporate day where an entire field of City Council workers take to the course and have a day of golfing fun. Mike lined up along side three guys from his department and the game was on…

Grant Mike Mike AndreThe venue was the lovely Durbanville Golf Club…

Durbanville Golf ClubMike has been practicing and entered the competition on a 19 handicap. His playing partner, Grant, has a 9, so it was expected that he would be depended on for the lion’s share of the points! Mike took a few holes to settle down, but very soon he was hitting nice and straight and landing in the middle of the fairway…

Fairway shotBut just because your ball lands in the middle of the lawn, it doesn’t mean your next shot won’t go astray. You really are only as good as your last game! Mike’s short game let him down a bit and he carded a number of 7s, but NOT on the 7th hole. A sweet par 3, there was a prize for the closest to the pin and Mike’s drive was nothing less than 98% perfect (he needed an extra 2% to get it in the hole). Here’s where it landed….

Closest to the pinIt changed the game! No matter what happened after that, we will always have the birdie on the 7th hole! ๐Ÿ˜€

The scenery at Durbanville is lovely with a dam over which you have to hit to land on this green…just to the right…

Lake viewThe course is challenging, with one of the most significant holes being the Pulpit hole, which is the 14th! Man that was crazy. The green is high above you and if you don’t get it right, your ball will come rolling back down, which it did in our case….a couple of times! I’d love to go back to Durbanville sometime in the future and go caddie for Mike just so I can watch him play the 14th again. Mike’s little chip over the bunker in this picture below was excellent…it’s the 18th green, so it was a good way to end…

18th greenMike & Grant came 16th out of about 80. As it was a corporate day, everyone got a prize and so they each won a R250 gift voucher to Tygerberg Mall. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Grant won two more prizes for getting close to the pin and Mike won closest to the pin on the 7th – more vouchers to Tygerberg Mall! So we’ll have to go back to Durbanville, play golf and then have a meal. The other half of the 4 ball, Mike and Andre did very well and came 8th.

Dinner was at the club with our fellow players enjoying this view…

Dinner viewWe arrived home around 8-30pm. I can tell you, 3-35am was a long, long time ago. Once more, I felt we had sucked the marrow out of the day. Mike made me a welcome decaff coffee and I went to sleep!

Golf is challenging. It’s a bit like life – a roller coaster ride and it’s a great leveller. Even the best players are not guaranteed a perfect round. The next shot could be hacked into the bushes or hit out of bounds. And like life, just because you end up in difficulty, it’s not yet the end. You may just pull off a spectacular little hook that lands you on the green, just inches from the hole. And like life, the golf course has ups and downs. Easy holes and hard ones. Straight forward drives and tricky pitches, sand traps and water hazards. Like you want to avoid the obstacles on the course, you want to avoid the difficulties in life.ย  Central to the game of golf is the ball. Take the ball out of the game and there is no game! Central to my life is my relationship with God. Take God out of my life and it’s no life at all. So if I carry on about Him and how much He means to me, it’s because that’s how I view it.ย  Jesus came into the world, so that I could have life and have it abundantly and that’s what I’m trying to do!

Theย  Living Translation of the Bible quotes Jesus in John 10 vs 10 as saying this:

“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

Rich and satisfying! Yes!

Today we celebrate the wedding of a good friend of David’s and the son of good friends of ours.ย  Our David and the groom, David were at school together and so David is playing at David & Kate’s wedding this afternoon. We are blessed to be able to attend! It’s an exciting day!

God bless you!

In His Grip,
