Well Done Tim Noakes!

1-25pm

The other day I was in the supermarket and I couldn’t help but buy Pick n Pay’s latest May edition of Fresh Living…

MagI paged through it as I walked out the shop, reading this paragraph as I went….

ParagraphI smiled to myself. “I think he’s done it!” was the thought that crossed my mind. I was thinking about Professor Tim Noakes. Is it possible that he has almost convinced the major players of commerce that LCHF works?. The article did include a disclaimer, but it was still in a magazine published by the 2nd largest supermarket chain in South Africa  (Source: http://www.ventures-africa.com/2012/08/the-5-largest-retailers-in-south-africa/). I bought it because of the great carb debate title on the front. The LCHF way of life is popping up all over the place, including getting a quarterly magazine of it’s own entitled Lose It, under, I believe, the Fair Lady umbrella. The first edition came out last month. I have tried to find it but everywhere I look, it’s sold out!lose-it-2014My mind went back to 2012 when Prof Tim began to come onto Radio CCFm’s Rise and Shine for an hour on a monthly basis. (Listen to those talks here , but remember to come back!)   What he said about eating a low carb diet sounded fine. It was what he said about eating loads of animal fat that made our jaws drop! Since then, I’ve come a long way in understanding how eating Low Carb, High Fat works. It’s still an ongoing challenge to get the balance right, to avoid sugar and to limit my big weakness of croissants to one a week! What I have learned is to be a whole lot more selective about what I eat.  No sugar in tea or coffee is the starting point. No bread, no potatoes, no rice or pasta, no refined carbs. It sounds so drastic, the idea of never having a sweet treat again! I am not diabetic, but probably am carbohydrate intolerant. And when I closely consider how I feel after eating carbs, I often find myself wishing I hadn’t eaten them – I feel bloated with indigestion. And so I have become a bit picky! I bought a croissant the other day and after eating it, determined I wouldn’t buy one from that shop again. If I am to eat a croissant, it had better be the very best quality money can buy! Wasting carb consumption on a  cardboard croissant is not going to happen again! It has been a huge change in mindset. When I look at food on a plate, I will now evaluate it in regard to the sugar or carb content instead of fat. So to see someone eating flavoured yoghurt, under the guise of ‘healthy food’ just freaks me out – it’s loaded with sugar and is entirely unhealthy! We have a long way to go before we start seeing the supermarket shelves change, but it’s a start to see more and more people talking about a low carb lifestyle, writing about it, trying it and finding themselves healthier than ever before.

I believe it won’t be long now before you can walk into a supermarket and ask for the LCHF section and you will be directed to it!

So well done Tim Noakes! Despite ongoing criticism and debate in the nutrition and medical fraternities, you have persevered. As a result thousands of people have found their lives changed. Keep going!

And so while I’ve got the magazine open, here’s a yummy looking low carb recipe….

I’m off to shop in a short while and will definitely be putting that on the menu soon. Thanks Fresh Living May 2014.

On a personal note, this morning I picked up on a verse in the Bible I’ve not really noticed before. The simplicity of the Gospel comes out in many places. There is John 3 vs 16, Acts 16 vs 39 and Romans 10 vs 9. They are all short explanations of salvation. Today, in John 5 vs 24, I found another. In the words of Jesus, “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my words and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” A choice lies before us. We can either believe what we have heard or we can reject it. If we believe, there is no condemnation for us. Supernaturally, we have crossed from death to life. All we have to do is believe in Jesus.

It is that simple!

God bless you today!
