Truffles the Cat’s Marriage Message For Men

It’s not often that a cat can teach a marriage lesson to men. In fact I have always said that when it comes to marriage, you rather want the attitude of a dog. A dog is excited to see you and pays you as much attention as he can. A cat is snooty and gives attention on their terms. So rather behave like the dog.

But this morning, I put into words what Truffles displays almost on a daily basis and therein lay the message to men about what women need in marriage.

A few years ago I was given a gift of a soap dish. One day Truffles was meowing in our  bathroom and so I tossed the soap out the dish, washed it out and it became Truffles’ upstairs water bowl…

It’s seldom empty. Yet almost every day, sometimes twice, Truffles will arrive and meow piteously as if she’s so very thirsty and there’s no water to be found. Even though her little bath is full, she looks up at us pleading for fresh water…

And so we usually rinse it out, refill it and she gets on with drinking…

This morning as she was doing her insistent meowing routine, and as Mike went to fill up her bowl, I mentioned she was a typical woman. All she wants is for us to pay her some attention and do something for her.

She’s no different to every wife on earth. All we want is for our husbands to pay us some attention and do something for us.

It was quite a fun moment this morning as that lesson from Truffles settled into the conversation between Mike and I. “Therein lies a blog,” I said.

Sometimes there are very small, simple lessons that can make a big difference to a marriage. I think this is one of them.

Husbands, pay your wives some attention every day and do something for them every day. Servant leadership. Words of Jesus:

Luke 22:26

“The one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant”

And that applies to all of us. We must each one, remain humble. And I think this is  very applicable for Dads towards their daughters as well.
