Today turned out in a completely unexpected way. Truffles had spent the night on my desk. When I woke up, she was still there. When Mike went downstairs to make coffee, she enthusiastically followed. I went to feed her. She meowed and showed interest in the idea of food, but when I put it down in front of her, she couldn’t bring herself to eat it. While she was in the kitchen, she yawned. For a split second, I saw the problem. She had a massive laceration on her tongue. A little later on, she showed great enthusiasm for food and when I put it down on the floor she pounced on it, grabbing a chunk with her mouth and spreading it all over the floor (really annoys me when she does that), but there it stayed. She didn’t eat it. She wouldn’t drink. I let her outside. She had a little piddle and then went round the back and was acting pretty normally. I went inside.
It’s David’s birthday so at 8-30, he came for an hour, had coffee and a chat and then left. I went to my desk to continue working. On taking a quick eye break, I walked to the balcony and there was Truffs sitting looking very forlorn. I offered her some water, but she turned in down. I decided she should visit the vet. They had an appointment at 11-15 so I took her down. The vet, Dr. Jean is Irish and her twins (boy and girl) were born on the same day as Elsie. So we always talk about the babies and show each other photos!
She examined Truffles and eventually she swaddled her firmly in a towel and forced open her mouth. She saw the laceration and said she needed to have a closer look. Taking her to another examining room, she got someone to hold her and under a strong light she had a good look. She came back with unpleasant news. Truffles must have got into a ding-dong of a battle with a cat and somewhere along the line she bit her tongue really badly. So bad was it, that the blood supply to a corner of it had been cut off and that part of the tongue was blue. Dr. Jean explained she was going to sedate Truffles, cut the piece off, put some stitches in and I could pick her up later. It seemed a small procedure. I left the vet and came home. About an hour later, she called to say it had been done, but her tongue was much worse than she had originally seen and she must be in a lot of pain. She said she would give her painkillers, appetite booster, do an IV hydrate and then I could pick her up at 5-30pm. I went at 5-15pm to pick up Truffs. She looked dismal.
She hasn’t made a peep since I picked her up…no meows. She is really zombied out, although a short while ago, I think I heard a very faint purr and while I was stroking her, she lifted her right paw as if she was going to knead. Because her tongue is so sore, she hasn’t been able to groom, so I’ve just taken a brush and given her a good brushing. She really enjoyed that and leaned into it. We kept her in the back room for a few hours, but now I’ve bought her up to my bedroom and she is lying on my desk…I think I’ll leave her here for the night. She’s comfortable and at home.
And all this happened on David’s birthday. Tomorrow we are going to Swellendam. I was on the point of postponing but David will come over and Truffles sit and we will return tomorrow evening. She will be okay. Right now she is just a bit drugged. She’s slowly waking up. Poor Truffles. I’m sure her tongue is going to heal quickly, but it still may take a day or two.
Friday 1st March 2019. Very important day! David is 28. This is where my daily Bible verses come from…
I need to wrap up and catch up with one or two other things.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you.
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
I ran 4.2km on the road – doing laps around our block. I did 10. I am not as fit as I thought I was. I was very slow, but I ran the whole way. Usually at gym, I run 3 minutes walk 2 which allows my heart rate to drop. With this run, it stayed a bit too high…

Day 108.
