Swellendam and Truffles

Last night Truffles was very wan. She came to my bed after I went to sleep and I woke up after midnight with her tucked in against my side. She purred quietly when I stroked her, but she still hadn’t meowed. Eventually, I decided I wasn’t going to be able to sleep with her there, so I took her down to the guest room and shut her in. I went back to bed, waking up at 4am to go and check on her. As I opened the door, she bolted past me! Much more chipper than last night but I couldn’t get any food down her. I left her with the run of the back part of the house. Put water out. Put food out.

By 5-13am, we were on our way to Swellendam. On the way I left voice notes for David. He was coming round to cat-sit and would take her to the vet if she wouldn’t eat. They would then have to force feed her. We made good time in getting to Swellendam – 2 hours 35 minutes. It took us 9 minutes to get to CCFm. We passed 60 cars on Baden Powell Drive so that was pretty quiet. We got to Paul Cluver Wine estate in about 57 minutes which was also very good time.

Shortly after we arrived, Mike went off to play golf. Adrian and Stacey went for a long walk. Elsie slept. I phoned David to find out how Truffles was doing. To my amazement, she had eaten the food I’d left out for her. David gave her more and she wolfed it down. That appetite enhancing pill was kicking in. She didn’t need to go back to the vet. Good news indeed.

We had a wonderful time with the Swellendam family. Elsie is just over 9 months old. I last saw her two weeks ago and since then, she has grown so much. She’s on solids now and has filled out. Apart from that, the other change I noticed is how much more she was smiling. She’s been smiling for ages, but it’s been more shy. Today she was beaming enthusiastically. Her curiosity knows no bounds. My earrings, my watch, my toes, my shoes, my braces, my handbag – all were reached for and looked at with varying degrees of interest. Mike’s moustache was also peered at curiously.. you can imagine her thinking, What is that? What is it for? How did it get there?

Elsie, when you read this in the future,  at 9 months old, you were absolutely adorable! Love you my sweetheart.

Stacey cooked a delicious lunch. We were initially going to stay the night, but with Truffles still tender, this  afternoon we made the trip home. Warm happy memories.

David was still at our house when we got home. Truffles was eating and had her voice back, so her meows and pleading for food had returned. She was hesitant to go outside. The vet had said give her one drop of pain liquid into her food (only one single drop). The vet  actually reiterated that on the packaging. Only one drop. So I sucked up one drop into a syringe and plopped it into her food. She gobbled it down. She can have another single drop tomorrow. She will sleep well tonight. She’s locked inside for the night. She’s even beginning to groom herself, so is now on the mend.

So grateful. Truffles hangs in there once again. The number of days that Truffles will live is known to the Lord.  One day I will write of her passing , but in the meantime, I have a special, skinny, neurotic, old lady of a cat.

2 Corinthians 12:9

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

These are the days!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.
