These Are Busy Days

Monday 20/1/2020 – all those twenties.

I was working by 6:45 am and have clocked up about 8 and a half hours today. I also did the washing. The day was quite quiet because Mike went shopping for the electrics and also went to the building site for most of the day. It was a bit irritating because a couple of small tools have gone missing from the basement room where the builder was storing most of them. He set about boarding up the place, but then decided with the windows coming tomorrow, he’d leave the main ones open. I’m not sure if they will be installed by tomorrow but this is what it looks like now…

There has been much discussion about what the top floor will be made of – we are planning on light steel frame. It’s going to loom high – two floors higher than what you see. I won’t be able to get it into a frame from where the one above has been taken. The wind is going to blast across the neighbour’s house and whip around the top floor of ours. Having a light steel frame may not result in the rigidity we need. We can put rib and block but it adds R140 000 to the cost. We started asking around. I whatsapped my friend about her neighbour’s new house  – they have light steel frame all round with very little brick. I asked what is it like in the wind? The reply:

That triggered a lot of conversation. I asked Werner what he thought and he said it was most likely because they used 9mm board instead of 16. Then I asked a guy up the road – Werner also built his house. I asked him how his house was in the wind. His reply…

He has a combination of light steel frame and some brick, but he also has a light steel frame and wooden floor so that’s not solid.

Mike has a number of ideas like putting concrete in the light steel frame to make it more sturdy, especially at the corners. He also wanted to use concrete with polystyrene balls (it makes it a light concrete) but it can’t be pumped, so he’s thinking up other options. He’ll speak to Werner tomorrow about his ideas.

Out to dinner with Julian and now I am home wrapping up for the day. #Grateful!
