The Quest for Significance…

3-31pm

I’ve been thinking about this over the last few days. Everyone is looking for significance. It begins when you are a young child, trying to find out ‘what you are good at’ or ‘what makes you acceptable to others!’ It’s usually those two things that lead to you feeling some degree of significance. Everyone wants to try and leave their mark on the world; do something that at least will make them significant to someone.

B.Larson in his book on Luke writes:
Rabbi Zusya years ago said, “In the world to come I will not be asked, ‘Why were you not Moses?” I will be asked, “Why were you not Zusya?” The problem is how to be the person you were meant to be.

While we were chatting about it the other day, Mike raised the example of the grass.  The grass doesn’t try and be a daisy or look to be a tree. It works perfectly as grass. It looks in place growing close to the ground, it has its significance in just being there and not necessarily doing anything more than just being grass! Grass can’t help but be itself. Fish are fish. They don’t try and be birds. I guess the secret to significance is being who we are and doing what comes naturally to us. It’s finding our passion in life. Today I encountered two people who have found what they are good at…they do what comes naturally and as a result they’ve found significance.

Stuart Briscoe – 81 and a half and still travelling the world, preaching the Word of God…

Keith McFarlane – piano tuner, sitting at David’s piano, doing what he’s good at and what comes naturally…

And I think that’s the bottom line, when you do what comes naturally, it will be the thing that you are good at. It will be your passion and you will find significance in doing it.

It is God who gives you the gifts and talents you have, so best to trust Him for openings to use them.

1 Corinthians 12:12 says “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.”

So I heard Stuart Briscoe preach and he was great. And the piano tuner tuned, so now we are on key!

Tuesday 21st February 2012 has been a good one.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
