The Dates of My Life

This morning as I worked through someone’s CV I came across missing dates. Her life had gaps and I wondered how easy it would be to miss a few years of your life – forget what you did in those years, so I worked back over my own life and rebuilt it.

07/2014 to current – Edvectus Teacher Recruitment

01/1997 to 05/2014 – Worked at Radio CCFM – sales department and on air presenter.

(2004 to 2014 I presented the morning drive show “Rise and Shine from 6-9am)

01/1996 to 12/1996 – Self-employed – first aid supplier – I actually did this for many years but was full time in 1996 and it really equipped me with some great selling skills which would be put to good use when I started selling advertising for CCFm in 1997. In 1996, Mike had written a computer programme to help a friend with her travel company. During this year, I also phoned around to ask other travel companies if they had need to computerise their booking programme. Hylton Ross was one of those. 🙂

12/1991 to 12/1995 – Serina Kaolin Mine – Occupational Health Sister (During this time Radio CCFm began in 1993 and took off in 1995 and I was a volunteer)

02/1991 to 11/1991 – Maternity Leave

01/1989 to 01/1991 – Highlands House, Oranjezicht where I worked as the Occupational Health Sister. I only worked at Highlands House three days a week. I also picked up a handy job working at Kenilworth Clinic where I worked 1.5 nights a week. I worked all Monday night and half of Friday night. It was wonderful little job. I fell pregnant with David 🙂

10/1987 to 12/1988 – Maternity Leave

04/1987 to 09/1987 – Western Province Blood Transfusion Centre, Paarl – I fell pregnant with Stacey – 🙂

02/1987 to 03/1987 – Paarl Hospital Casualty where I discovered my Afrikaans was really bad and trying to save lives was very difficult when you couldn’t understand what the patients were saying! I worked one month, discovered the challenges and worked a month’s resignation!

10/1986 to 12/1986 – Leeuwendal Hospital – 1 month in Surgical Ward/ 2 months in theatre – being in theatre stretched me! It was really tough and when Mike got a job in Paarl back in land surveying, I was only too happy to have that as an excuse to leave. I know if I had stayed I would have become a really good theatre sister, but those 2 months were grueling.

01/1983 to 09/1986 – Registered Nurse and Midwifery studies – Somerset/Mowbray Hospitals

01/1970 to 12/1982 – Education – Frank Johnson Primary from 1970 to 1976, Lord Malvern from 1977 to first term 1979, Oriel Girls High from second term 1979 to end of 1982.

When I look back over it, I find myself filled with gratitude. There were ups and downs but far more ups in my career than downs, that’s for sure!

For many years of my life, I would lay my plans and my work before the Lord. I memorized Proverbs 16:3

Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established.

So many of my plans came to pass. Those that didn’t – the Lord had better plans! 🙂

#235 of my thousand thanks is for this moment in time captured a day or two ago – David giving Mike a guitar lesson! 😀

These are the days!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
