Proud To Be Capetonian

10-33am

The massive fires that swept through the Cape Town mountains last week bought out the best in the Capetonian community.  The damage done was summarized in this pictorial..

Fire detailsFor the first time in 38 years, Cape Town’s famous annual cycle tour was shortened to 47km. The high praise of the firefighters and volunteer wildfire crew was repeated over and over again during the television commentary. I am so proud to be Capetonian! I picked up some of the images off the TV screen…the start…the shortened route certainly didn’t put anyone off…

The startOut along the M3 to the end of the Blue Route, mostly up hill…then all the way back to the city again…mainly downhill…this is the turn….

The turn

The weather was spectacular…

Lady winnersThe thing that was so great about the television coverage was the huge number of compliments the city got for how the fires were handled. Proud to be Capetonian!

On Monday when I woke to see how big the fire was, it became obvious that help was needed. Everyone was on edge – watching events unfold through the news and social media. It was frustrating doing nothing. They needed people to fight the fire – I don’t think it’s one of my biggest skills! But when I read that they needed first aid equipment and posted a list of stuff, it hit the right spot. I used to deal in first aid equipment and I had loads of it. I packed up packets of bandages and plasters and savlon and whatever else I could find and trundled it down to Noordhoek. YaY! I did something. I felt so relieved. That was the nature of the week. We just had to do something and so hundreds and hundreds of people did…we all chipped in. All the little things became a big thing. It felt great to be part of this community for such a time as this.

That’s why we are placed on this earth – to help one another.

Galatians 6:2

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

The law of Christ?

John 13:34

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Just do that to make the world a better place.

Shine on!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
