3-21pm
There’s one thing I’ve learnt about eating Low Carb High Fat and that is you don’t need to go overboard! It was one of the mistakes I made when I first started in October last year. I went a bit crazy with all the high fat things I could lay my hands on…specially cream, biltong, bacon fat, chicken skin – foods I’d never usually eat, I ate, just because I could. What I have learnt is that moderation is good. There’s a great deal of sense in eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full. And, I think that there would be much more consensus reached within the medical and nutritional circles if those who are well settled on LCHF revealed their eating plans. I think that the sensible LCHF followers would be found to be eating an amazingly healthy diet. Today I had egg and bacon for breakfast (about 9-30am) with a pork sausage and cherry tomatoes. For a late lunch (just before 3pm) I have had a green salad which included avocado, olives, feta and a few seeds. I am very satisfied. Eating LCHF makes me feel more in control. And it’s not just more in control of my diet; it’s more in control of my emotions & my blood sugar level…no spikes and dips. I think I’m calmer!
I am definitely eating less having the high protein breakfast and leaving berries and yoghurt for later in the day. I’m satisfied for longer.
What I’m most happy about is that 22 year old David has been looking at sugar content on the stuff he buys. His eyes too have been opened to the incredible amount of sugar laden ‘everything!’ He told me this morning he went through every single variety of yoghurt and found them all to be sweetened and he found two varieties of choc chip yoghurt. Yoghurt, once punted as a wonderful healthy, nutritional, dairy option, has turned into nothing but a sugar ladened “wolf in sheep’s clothing” dessert. The manufacturers are killing us with sugar and we are just going along and accepting it.
I challenge you, whoever you are, wherever you are, to cut sugar from your diet for just 28 days. No more sugar in coffee, no more sugar in tea. Ditch all things sweet for just one month. See how you feel. You will be amazed. And I think, therein lies the starting point for unity between dietitians and pundits of LCHF. I am convinced that nutritionists will admit that we don’t need added sugar to anything we eat. We get enough of it from fruit and vegetables. When it comes to carbohydrates, they should be hard pressed to find a reason to be pushing 130g of carbs down our throats every single day when we get enough of those from fruit and veg as well. But it was slowly slowly that the tortoise beat the hare. We must let the anti-LCHF fraternity work it out for themselves. After all, just 5 years ago, Prof Tim Noakes himself would have raised his eyebrows at the strange idea of a low carb, high fat eating, nutter! These things take time to…digest!
In the meantime, I will continue to work on finding the perfect balance between LCHF and the unique metabolism and dietary requirements of Helga van Niekerk! It took Prof Tim Noakes 2 and a half years to really get it right. It will take all of us time to find out what works for us.
Human Rights Day 2013. I did the Rise and Shine show this morning. Came home, made the cooked breakfast, did some work & soon we may mozie off to the Noordhoek Market.
These autumn days are fabulous…view from my bed….
Autumn sunset…from the balcony…
Truffles wouldn’t go near him…
My Human Rights Day verse for the day…
Micah 6:8 And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
God bless you!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
