Fire in Simon’s Town

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was a day there were a lot of helicopters about because there was a big mountain fire above Simon’s Town. Fire services were out in force as there was a strong south-easter blowing. There were numbers of helicopters going back and forth. Sanparks.

And a military chopper. From our house, we can see the smoke but not smell it as it’s blowing towards Noordhoek.

From Simon’s Town it’s a different story. There are a lot of photos taken and posted on the neighbourhood Whatsapp group, but they have been forwarded so I don’t know who took them, although this one was clearly from the Deep South Report!

I also took some screen shots from video footage.

This was the 4pm update…

It’s going to be a long night for the fire crew.

I worked almost 7 hours and now we are about to have dinner. Julian is about to land.

It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me.

Mike at Work on the Balcony

Monday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day we didn’t go to the beach. It was a little on the cool side and I had a bounty of work to do. I didn’t know it would only take me 6 hours.

Mike too had work to do. He put a plug in on the balcony, a task that has not been important, so it waited 3 years. Today it got done.

Now I can work on the balcony. Mike also sprayed some tacks so they don’t rust. There is maintenance to be done, including painting the balcony ceiling.

All in good time.

Today was the day I went to the doctor to get a new prescription. All is well. He also froze off a sun spot on my right arm. Hopefully that will heal and be gone.

In Swellendam, the family are seeing Ron is being cared for. We are praying for him daily. On Wednesday, they will take him to the oncologist and see what can be done to make him more comfortable. It’s not easy to be told your days are numbered, but it does give you the opportunity to put your house in order and spend time with those you love.

Isaiah 48:17
This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”

We will follow Him.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

One of the Perfect Days

Sunday

Dear Elsie,

Today was one of the perfect days in Cape Town. The sea was very calm and crystal clear. There was not too much wind, making it a spectacular summer’s day. We got to swim and I went for a walk later in the day. Two other things happened. Wayne came. We haven’t seen Wayne for a while and I asked him to cut a few things on his laser cutter. He came to drop them off. He’s never been here before so was excited to see the view.

The last couple of days there have been helicopters flying very low. Yesterday, one flew almost at the level of our house and dipped down over Fish Hoek beach before flying along the coast. It looked like a Sanparks chopper. Today there was another helicopter which flew for a bit, then hovered, then flew on. It gave me the opportunity to take a photo.

It doesn’t surprise me there were a number of private aircraft taking tourists on flips over the Peninsula. It’s just not common for them to come so low.

Another thing we saw late this afternoon were the trek fisherman out in the bay. We usually see them when we are down at the beach. It’s not often we see them plying their trade after 5pm. But there they were with their long fishing net in tow…

Hope they were successful. More of the day…

We know we have to enjoy these days because windlessness is not a frequent friend in Cape Town.

David has had two weeks upstairs. He has not been out for weeks. Julian arrives Tuesday so he will move back down to the Little Lookout where he has easier access to the street and may even go for a drive. He is determined not to overdo it. Going out will only be once every 10 days or so & then very slow. The days of going to church and slow walks ended abruptly in early October when he had a massive relapse from which he has not yet fully recovered. This is a slow business.

One day at a time.

Isaiah 46:10

God bless you.

All Hands on Deck

Saturday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day you & I had one of our lovely long chats. You watched while I picked the tiny ripe tomatoes from the tomato plant. And you saw the cats, watched me take the washing off the line and it was the day I read the little book on Zacchaeus to you. We spoke for an hour.

The day actually began a lot earlier. It was all hands on deck today as one guest left and the others said they were coming an hour later. That’s what they said yesterday. At 10am, I helped the guest pack her car. Ruth arrived and we got stuck in. The table cloth was in no fit state so I got another, but that needed ironing. Ah, we have an iron.

Ruth cleaned the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.

Mike & I did the upstairs (which just needed touching up) and the lounge.

It took the 3 of us 2 hours and we were good to go. Ruth was grateful for the help. The guests only arrived, in the end, at 2pm. I also had a chat with the guest in the Seaview Apartment. He leaves on Saturday but is back at the end of January and then mid-March to the end of May.  This means we’ll have the two main units occupied while we are, God willing, overseas. Our cruise is due to begin in 109 days.

This afternoon, I walked to Fish Hoek to do some shopping. I came home along Daisy Lane and stopped for a few minutes to admire the view.

Mike and David are watching chess.

Isaiah 46:9
Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Half Day Off

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that I had half the day off. I did some work early this morning and then a bit more this afternoon but had most of the day off. That was a treat. This morning when David came down, he managed to get himself an armful of cats. It’s not often that Raiku, particularly, will allow himself to be carried for long enough to have his photo taken.

David looks well here. The photo belies the befuddling underlying disorder.

The cats have bought much joy. They also have some foibles. Raiku does not like being picked up but when he does allow someone to sit and stroke him, he will purr loudly. Claw’d hardly purrs at all, but will lie for as much time as I allow on my lap enjoying every minute…just not purring. I asked Google why?

It is true that Claw’d will stare at me. Sometimes he stares at me from across the lounge and then will blink slowly. Other times he watches me intently…following my every move. But purring? Not so much. He is a lap cat which Raiku is not. We have stopped closing them in the study at night now, although it was detrimental to my sleep last night. Raiku woke me up at not long after 4am with pitiful meowing, pleading to be let out. Eventually, closer to 5am, I got up and let them out.

Mid morning, Mike and I went shopping. The shops were busy but not overwhelming. There’s a bit more to be done.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting. The guests arriving at the cottage tomorrow, asked if it would be ok if they arrived at 11am. We have a guest in the cottage who is leaving tomorrow. I said to the arriving guests that they can leave their luggage in the loft as the guest will only be out at 10am. They were fine with that. Then the current guest who is leaving asked if she could leave later as the next place she is going to can’t have her early! Ruth arrives at 10am. We will go down at 10am, help the out-going guest with her luggage and bring her up to the Little Lookout until she wants to leave. We’ve had the LL on Airbnb but no one booked it, so the guest may as well hang out there for an hour or two. Anyway, that’s tomorrow’s problem. For this evening, we await friends.

One of my favourites…

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Mike Pulled a Little Tendon in His Knee

Thursday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day that dawned beautiful and relatively calm…

but we didn’t go to the beach, because yesterday Grandpa pulled a little tendon in his knee. He was moving a bed & didn’t know he had hurt it until he was coming up the stairs. Today he rested it and it is feeling better, so if the wind isn’t too bad tomorrow, we’ll go slowly down and have our swim.

I worked for most of the day and then later this afternoon I went out to do some Christmas shopping.

Today I learned something about some of the house plants, including the two delicious monsters  and the pink anthurium we have in the lounge. They monstera are growing and needing to be planted into bigger pots. I’ve discovered they are toxic to cats and if the cats show an interest in them and start licking them or (stupidly) take a bite out of one of their leaves or stems, they will feel sick – and they may throw up or just get a very irritated gut. It’s not deadly, but it will make them feel blugh.  So now all three are on the trunk. The one on the right David bought me for my birthday. It’s a sacrificial gift when you have crippling fatigue and go out to a nursery to buy a gift.

Meanwhile, they have bath-time on their minds. Raiku with his paws around Claw’d’s neck and both washing the other. 2 cats a cleaning…

Long weekend, although I’ll probably do some work tomorrow.

Isaiah 45:24
They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone are deliverance and strength.’

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

Christmas Cat

Wednesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day you got your Grade RR report and  you have done so well! These are some of the highlights.

I’m sure you are going to love Grade R next year. The other thing I noticed yesterday was the top girls’ names in the UK for 2023. Look who is number 14!

Today was the day we finally found the rest of the Christmas decorations, so I’ve set aside some of the ones I may use for the table on Christmas day. Right now they are in my bedroom on the sideboard with Oupa’s bonsai plant.

We’ll see what makes it to the table. Meanwhile, I couldn’t resist this. We hope to turn the cats into Christmas cats. Have to start slowly…

I worked for almost 7 hours. At 6pm I join a webinar this evening, so I’m keeping this short.

Isaiah 45:22
“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

Bravecto Day

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I needed to put Bravecto on the cats again. With the mountain behind, they pick up ticks so easily. My strategy today was to put it on first thing in the morning. I usually take their collars off at night and put them back in the morning before they go out, so I did that. They went outside but instead of spending 5 or 10 minutes out, Claw’d spent about an hour. He finally came back in and by then David was down for coffee. With David holding him, I parted his fur and poured the vial onto his skin. It smells like superglue so within seconds he was seriously unhappy but the job was done. He jumped off staring back us with daggers and betrayal in his eyes. Blinking at the smell, he tried to go outside, but I had shut him in, preferring him to hang around inside for a while. Some time passed and soon there was a truce.

Raiku soon appeared. I grabbed him, got his vial and the job was done in a few seconds. I think I managed to get more of the muti under  his collar. Today’s experience has been much better than 3 months ago on 12th September. They had only been with us for 2 months and they were still settling. Now they trust us more. Bravecto is so expensive and lasts 3 months. After I bought it the other day, I wondered to myself what others do. Then I remembered the day we got them, Sean, the previous owner had just given them a bath. Ah, that’s the cheap option. Sean also packed the shampoo as part of their belongings & I read the instructions to Mike. We had a good laugh as we imagined us trying to bath Claw’d and Raiku. They would both be in a temper for sure. The instructions say to bath weekly! The baths would be cheap but traumatic. The Bravecto costs just over R700 for both. The other option, I concluded is to put flea/tick collars on them over the winter season when there are less ticks. Otherwise, I’m paying close to R3000 a year just to keep ticks off them. I should have asked Jess. She’s a Cat Mom of note and has many years experience in the ways of our feline fur babies. She’s coming for Christmas.

Claw’d had enough of my lap and I needed to start work. Comfortable in my rocking chair, I moved my laptop there for a while & this became my early morning work view.

The other thing I am working on is this puzzle. Christmas time is the one time of the year, as work tails off,  I love to do a puzzle and this is one of my favourites – it’s of Cape Town. Long way to go.

David came down for dinner & spoke cheerful words! He said, “I felt really good when I woke up this morning.” It’s one of the things we purposefully do not do – keep on asking him, “How are you feeling?” He said he felt good until about 12 when he started feeling tired. He had come down early, so it would have been about 5 hours of feeling good, which is great. We’ll take that. What we have learnt is this horrible disorder is not predictable. A sign of improvement can’t be seen as permanent. It’s good for today. When he had a few really good days (way back in April when Julian and I were on St. Helena Island), we thought he was on the mend; that he would get better and we would move on. But no. Long Covid doesn’t work like that. It’s 2 steps forward and often 5 or 10 steps back. Then another month to get your 2 steps forward again. But even in this erratic, unpredictable, dreadful, debilitating illness, God is over all. I refuse to believe anything else.

And David is not depressed. Oh how grateful I am for that.

We have learned to lower our expectations.

Also today someone phoned David & offered to pay for him to see a haematologist. David was so touched.

It was a good day.

Isaiah 45:18
For this is what the Lord says— He who created the heavens, He is God; He who fashioned and made the earth, He founded it; He did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited— He says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.

Fish Hoek Beach at 9am and 4pm

Monday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I was at the beach at 9am and at 4pm, although when I went down at 4, it was just passing by. There was a bit of wind in the morning, but we thought it wouldn’t be too choppy. The shark spotters didn’t put the net out though, so I just bobbed around in the shallows. The sea was super warm – some said 20, but I thought about 18. Morning picture. The net was ready but it only got put out much later.

I walked down at 4pm to buy some salad ingredients. I stopped to take another photo. Not much difference, except the net was in place.

While there this morning, there was the (dreadful) sound of chain saws. The city were trimming these trees at the park on the other side of the railway line. I wondered if they were only trimming or if the plan was to cut them right back. I took a photo to compare later…

When I came by later, the trees were nicely trimmed.

They look much better. Such a beautiful day today.

I worked 6 hours.

David came down for dinner. He has had about 6 doses of Nattokinase. He doesn’t seem to have had any side effects, so now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if it will help in dissolving his clots. He’s focusing on getting a lot of rest.

Christmas 2 weeks today!

Isaiah 45:12
This is what the Lord says – It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.

I Got Here First

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day I had a sweet moment with Claw’d. I had been out and when I got home, he was sitting in my rocking chair. Usually when he’s there and I want to sit down, as I lower myself towards the chair, he leaps up and jumps off. Not today. He stared up at me as if to say, “I got here first.” I squeezed in next to him…

Eventually, he thought maybe my lap would be more comfortable.

Funny boy!

I have decided some of the tiniest things in the world can make me happy. I have a favourite spoon and this morning at breakfast, there it was, in the cutlery tray right at the top. My favourite spoon. It’s not too big; it’s not too small; it’s just right. I always look for it & am really pleased when it’s not in the dishwasher. It’s slightly smaller than a dessert spoon which is the reason I like it. In the photo below, it’s the top one. You can see my hand taking the photo in the bottom one!

Tiny pleasures! Another joy of the day was having a pedicure.

Later I went for a walk to the end of the street. The fire that burnt out the electricity box has caused all sorts of problems because over that section of the road the main electricity cables are underground. The Council has spent the weekend trying to fix the problem with workers digging up the road. They have to dig as far as the electricity pylon on the left.

There’s quite a stretch of road affected…

And to provide electricity for those without, there is an enormous generator.

It should be done in the next day or two.

Further down the road, the derelict house has had part of the roof removed.

And the house at the end is having its second half completed.

Those were the activities on the road today. A windy day.

We’ve just returned from visiting David upstairs. He is constructing a plan for 2024 where he will focus on more resting and restoring his body. He said he is feeling physically able to go out, but he is choosing not to. He needs to really rest his body and spend as much time as possible doing nothing. Getting his head (and ours) around this has taken time. It’s been a torrid journey for sure & I am understanding the rollercoaster is not yet over, but we are close to acceptance. The stages of grief come close to what we have had to deal with – loss of David’s  health is certainly something to grieve over. While we may not have had denial and anger, I’m sure David has. I have bargained – I would have taken his place in a heartbeat. We have all had our moments of misery and depression. Now more than ever, we feel able to accept what has happened. Our new goal is to establish him in a lower part of our accommodation where he is closer to the road and will have less stairs to climb. That won’t happen immediately but we should be able to achieve it by mid-2024.  The scary thing is the real possibility he may not be fully better by then.

Isaiah 45:5
“I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you…”

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

Raiku and the Baby Puff Adder

Saturday

Dear Elsie

Today was a busy day that began really early. I heard my cell phone buzzing with messages and eventually dragged myself out of my slumber and looked to see what was going on. It was 4.30am and an electricity box was on fire up the road.

The fire brigade was called and soon put it out.

The fire was out, but the damage was done and it looks like it’s going to be an issue for a few days ahead. The houses on the Simon’s Town side won’t have electricity for a number of days.

While that was going on, this naughty boy found a baby puff adder…

Josh, who is staying in the Little Lookout until tomorrow was on his way up the stairs to our place when he encountered this event… not knowing what kind of snake it was, he stopped to video. Then he came to tell us.

We went down, found it was not a mole snake but rather a tiny little baby puff adder. We got the cats inside. Mike then used a stick to coax the snake back to the bush.

The video of Raiku dueling is here:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-dF6_bYKd10?feature=share

The cats were locked inside for a few hours. It is a reminder that it is snake season. That little critter will grow. Hopefully, he’ll find a home elsewhere. Fortunately, Raiku is aware of danger and I don’t think he’ll take on an adult one. The perils of living on the mountainside. The other thing is I need to get more Bravecto for the cats. The ticks are coming back.

A windy day, so there was no beach.

Isaiah 44:24
“This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb:I am the Lord, the Maker of all things..”

This Is Not Normal

Friday

Dear Elsie

Today I was reminded that this is not normal!

It’s not normal to have 85 steps to the front door. We are so used to it – it is fully our normal, but for others it’s just  not normal. I was reminded of this when I was in the pet shop today looking at kitty litter and the salesman wanted to sell me a 15kg bag. I told him I had to get it up 85 steps. “Yoh! Why?”

Yes! Why indeed?! We’ve learned the higher up the mountain you go, the better the view. There are always going to be compromises in life. You compromise one thing for another. It’s difficult to find perfection. Our compromise for the view is the trek up the mountain. It’s hard work, for sure, but then we read this….and think those 85 steps are a jolly fine idea…

50 steps? Pffft! Actually, walking back from the beach up Echo Steps, it’s a whopping 248 steps to get home. The 85 are just our ‘driveway’!

But for David the stairs remain very hard work. It probably would be better for him to be somewhere with very few steps but that’s not available at the moment. He had a quiet day. He seems to be having better days than last week. His mood is more upbeat.

I am trying to expedite the funicular.

Today dawned very windless, so we went to the beach early and I swam in the shallows to just past the lighthouse and back. The water was so warm and flat, I could easily have stayed in, but work called. The wind has picked up and it is cloudy and overcast with the threat of rain. I have a feeling it’s going to be a windy weekend.

I had a good working day & at 2pm, Mike and I both had eye appointments. New glasses are on the way.

Isaiah 44:8
“Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

New Phone – Old Photos

Thursday

Dear Elsie,

Today was the day my new phone got all its contacts and apps transferred across. It took a chunk of the day but it got done. The camera is fantastic and there is a macro feature that I probably won’t use often but it takes super detailed close up photos….Clawd’s whiskers!

From the balcony…

But the most interesting thing was after the whole transfer of data had been done, there were a number of photos from January 2017 that must have been on the ST card. Familiar photos on Fish Hoek beach but what’s interesting is that a number of them have in the background the land on which our house now stands. In 2017, it was a pipe dream. Julian on the beach 4th Jan 2017.

Mike and Julian…

This one from Sunny Cove station – from this point we can see our house very clearly. On 4th Jan 2017, it was completely missing…

But the photo that most grabbed my attention was this one. There was something going down on Elsie’s Peak the evening of 4th January 2017 and a helicopter was hovering up there. I went out to take a photo…

I could never have imagined that the view of the mountain at this spot would one day be blocked by our house. I think early 2017, there were discussions under way that went like this:

Julian: We should really try and build behind the cottage. The view up there is amazing.

Mike and I: How are we supposed to do that? Do you know how hard it will be and how expensive?

Julian: We just need to build something small.

Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine living here  – that’s for sure. Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.

Yesterday David had an awful day, but today was a new day and he felt better. He actually went outside and up the stairs to the top patio of the back plot & chatted to Mike about how it was going to work up there. Then he went back upstairs and I thought we wouldn’t see him again, but he came down at just after 6pm for tea and a chat. My sister sent me a video of Bruce Fordyce and his experience with what he believes to have been vaccine damage. Bruce has had great results with Nattokinase, NAC and Bromelain. We watched the video together.  David has started on Natto and NAC and tomorrow we will throw Bromelain into the fray and see how he does. What is startling is that David used to be 10% of his healthy self. Then in September, when he had the improvement, he felt he was up to 20% and on the right trajectory. After his relapse, he was less than 10% – probably 5%. His goal now is to get back up to 15 or 20%. I asked him about depression and he said he has been down in the dumps for sure, but not clinically depressed. He gets over it & begins to strategise again to try improve or make use of the limited energy he has.  Today was a better day. He’ll take it.

Isaiah 44:6
“This is what the Lord says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last apart from me there is no God.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

CCFm’s 30th Birthday Celebration

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was the day after CCFm’s 30th Birthday Celebration which we went to last night. It was great to connect with old friends and catch up.

It was also good to be reminded of God’s faithfulness over the last 30 years. I sat next to Sandy Day who regaled me with her African adventures.  There are 54 countries in Africa and Sandy has been to a whopping 24 of them, including crazy places such as Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Gabon. She’s also been to Mali & had a horrific night on an incredibly beautiful island off Madagascar – all due to the growling lemurs! Such stories to tell. Definitely need to have her round again.

We got home late and I got to bed just before midnight. I woke up before 5am, so am really tired now. I also worked for 8 hours. The Little Lookout is fully ready for guests who are coming for 3 nights tomorrow. I’ve also opened it from Sunday to Sunday. Julian only returns on 19th, so David is up on his floor and the Little Lookout is empty. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to be booked.

David has not had a good day. He’s been really tired, had a headache, very sore muscles and a tight chest. I’m always hopeful the bad comes before the good and these are signs of the blood clots breaking down. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

The wind is expected to drop overnight, so hopefully tomorrow we’ll get a swim in.

Isaiah 43:25

and remembers your sins no more.

The Lord Knows

Tuesday

Dear Elsie

Today was a difficult day for our family as we heard that your Oupa is very, very ill. We are so sorry.  He is a fine man with a love for gardening and he has given us so many plants, including this one. He gave it to us in 2021 and it’s still going strong.

We will be praying for you & especially Oupa Ron. I’m so glad you are just around the corner from him.  We need to appreciate every day, because these things happen so suddenly and unexpectedly. Our life’s end comes when it is supposed to come. The Lord knows when that will be.

The wind has picked up so there was no beach for us today. I took Julian to the airport and then came home to work. We also put final touches to the cottage and are currently waiting for the guest to arrive.  I have a feeling she is driving from Johannesburg and will be here much later tonight, so we’ve left the lights on & the key in the lockbox.

On the David front, yesterday he started Nattokinase. We’ll see if it helps.

And tonight, Mike and I get to go to the CCFm end of year dinner. We are looking forward to that – we will catch up with friends.

Isaiah 43:18-19
This is what the Lord says—“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

It’s not about now – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Gran xx
