Mike has a nice voice. His speaking voice is so smooth – he really is good for radio (You can hear him on Radio CCFm on Saturday morning between 9-30 and 10am). His singing voice is also good, although he doesn’t think so. This last week I was reminded of how nice his voice was when I played back the short video he took from our hotel room while away for our 30th wedding anniversary. Then last night as we turned in for the night and the lights were all off, he said something briefly, like “good night!” and I again I was reminded of how easy his voice in on the ear. In the darkness with only his voice to recommend him, it was as smooth and appealing as the day I met him. In the darkness, we ended up having a conversation about the funniest time we noticed each others voices. I’ve probably written about this before, but it’s always fun to recall it, mainly because it was so ridiculous and unexpected.
CCFm was in its infancy and operating out of the little house in Fish Hoek. On Mondays, the station manager (Avril) was off and so was the receptionist. I would get in around 8-30am and if needed, I would answer calls until someone else came in to take over. I sat at the little desk in the front office and the phone rang. I answered it in my best professional telephone voice possible. A very official important sounding man with a very nice voice asked to speak to Avril. I quickly explained that it was Avril’s day off but he could speak to Irmgard. He said that would be great. So I put him through to Irmgard.
Now you have to understand that CCFm was really in its infancy. We didn’t have a clue of how to run a radio station, so when someone of that calibre called, I got excited that someone very important was interested in CCFm. I waited a few moments and then went down the passage to see if Irmgard was still on the phone. She was. I waited a little longer and when I saw she had hung up, I put my head around the corner of her office and said, “who was THAT?”
She looked at me as if I was stark staring mad.
“Huh? That,” she said, “was your husband!”
“What! Why didn’t he say so?!” I asked. “I didn’t recognise his voice!”
I immediately called him back and asked him why he didn’t tell me it was him. “What?” he asked surprised, “was that you? I wondered who this very nice lady was who answered the phone. I thought wow CCFm is sounding good!”
Neither of us had recognised the other but both thought we each sounded great!
We’ve always laughed over that.
Here’s the video that Mike took at Arabella.
There’s a more important voice you want to listen out for.
Hebrews 4:7
“If you hear God’s voice today, do not be stubborn.”
It will be worth it to obey.
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you!
