Mike Was Robbed!

12-49pm

It’s not what you want to hear. After I got off air this morning just after 9am, I called Mike on his cell phone and got voice mail, so I tried him at his office number. The moment he answered the phone, I knew something was wrong. “What’s happened?” I asked. He said, “I’ll tell you just now, how did Share-a-thon go?” “Fine,” I blurted, “What happened????”  “I was robbed,” he said, “but I’m okay – I wasn’t hurt.” He went onto explain, that he had picked someone up ‘desperate to get to Plumstead!’ She sat in the front seat chatting away to him, leaning forward every now and then. It was dark – before sunrise – Mike was concentrating on the traffic  – while she was leaning forward, she was rifling through is glove compartment, fishing R800 out of his wallet and sneaking his Christmas gift from me last year into her bag. His Samsung Galaxy Note 2… R8000 worth of cell phone! He dropped her off at the Wynberg turn off and continued into town. It was only when he got to the petrol station to get fuel that he realised what had happened.

Be careful! No more picking up strangers for Mike.  If you are stopped on the street in Wynberg area and are offered a grey Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (it’s the big one), it could be Mike’s. It looks like this…

Mike says she did not seem like a South African. She was an African woman with dreadlocks. She was wearing a fleecy lined white jacket. She spoke English well,  but in an unsophisticated way and in an unfamiliar accent. Mike bought me this cell phone for my birthday last year and he loved it so much, I returned the favour and bought him one for Christmas. He insured mine, but I didn’t insure his! 🙁

It’s a sickening feeling, when this happens. It happened to Stacey in Kuala Lumpur – she had her smart phone pick pocketed off her. When I got home and told her, she could so identify. But you know what? Mike is well. It is only a cell phone. He will miss it, but I’m sure we can find him an old one to get him by until such time as we are able to replace it.

It’s so interesting what the Bible says about theft….one of the ten commandments, “thou shalt not steal” clearly indicates that there was theft in those days already.  Fast forward about 1400 years and you find Jesus saying,

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)

She may have stolen Mike’s cell phone and his money, but she cannot steal our joy and our salvation!

God bless you loads!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
