2-03pm
The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind of activity! The tables are turned as I’ve been faffing around Mike after he fell badly down a slippery rock. I’ll get to that, but let me start from where I left off…
After yesterday morning’s golf, I settled comfortably at a lovely little coffee shop round the corner from our B&B to do the blog. Four years ago, the owners came down from Johannesburg in search of a quieter life and opened Pennant Wing…
They set about creating an attractive, eclectic array of wares most of which they make & bake in their home at the back and sell in their coffee shop at the front. It’s comfortable, welcoming and homely…
The service and presentation were very impressive!
We spoke to one of the owners, Geoffrey and he asked if we had walked to the waterfall. “No, ” we replied! “Where’s the waterfall?” He explained and we immediately decided this must be the final fling of our Swellendam fun (well almost!). Look out for Pennant Wing next time you’re in Swellendam – it’s number 5 Swellengrebel St which is the extension of Voortrekker.
By 3-30pm, we were driving up Berg St following Geoff’s directions. We found parking and set off walking along a farm road…
We soon arrived at the right sign…
….and started up the narrow path…
…which soon turned into a steep ascent…
We walked higher and higher, puffing and panting, with Mike roaring on ahead, past steep cliff faces and lots of running water…over and over again it reminded us of the Drakensberg…
We finally arrived at an opening and discovered we were above the treetops and had a distant view of Swellendam…not that you can see it in this photo…
Mike was quite far ahead and so we didn’t see exactly what happened. We found him sitting on a rock looking very shaken and bloodied! We had arrived at our destination and he had stood up on a rock to admire the waterfall…
He took one step ahead and slipped, falling forward, and landing on his knees he slid down the rock towards the ravine below! 🙁
Fortunately, he landed on his feet on the next rock and was able to get his balance. But he had a couple of nasty gashes on his shins and just below his knee and serious bruise on the padding of his right hand. Praise the Lord nothing was broken. It could have been so much worse! He was bleeding a bit but there was nothing to be done apart from walk him down the mountain. So we reversed our steps and by the time we had got back to the farm, he was feeling a little better. So we stopped to greet the horses that had returned home….
Back at the B&B, Mike was still very uncomfortable. I bandaged him up, gave him pain killers and then we went to Adrian and Stacey and had a fabulous braai…
Today, on arriving home, we had a closer look and have concluded the one cut could probably do with a stitch or two. It’s deep but short with some swelling and bruising around. I dowsed it in betadine ointment and put a dressing on. He can’t be too bad as we’re off to have 9 holes of golf!
But here’s a truth, never more appropriate…
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Tomorrow Paul marries Nadine!
God bless you loads!
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
Gratitude Pic…3 very pleasant days spent in Swellendam…
