Sunday
Today Mike and I started chatting about his first overseas trip. Until the age of 60, Mike had never been overseas, so that first trip was to be so memorable for him. We started talking about exactly what happened, from the time we arrived at the airport to leave. As we chatted, I suggested we take this conversation to the road and go for a walk. And so off we set. We had no plan on where we were going. We just walked in the general direction of Fish Hoek.
After a little while, Mike suggested we walk towards Kalk Bay, so we meandered our way through the avenues reminiscing about our trip in 2011. We had arrived in the UK and were visiting friends in Somerset. We were trying to think of the Castle near Minehead. It was a little town. We couldn’t remember its name, so we stopped on the side of the road and I googled it. Dunster! Of course, it was Dunster. My blog records for March 2011 somehow got lost and while I was diligent in blogging throughout the journey, online, they are only recorded from June 2011. I remember posting photos of Dunster Castle. As we reflected on the village of Dunster, I looked up …. this is where we were in Fish Hoek!
What a coincidence!
Walking and talking, we got to Kalk Bay and decided instead of coffee, we’d have an ice cream so that’s what we did. Energised by that, Mike suggested we walk up through the streets of Kalk Bay. We started doing that and then I said why don’t we go back over the saddle. Mike was game, so we walked up Ponder stairs to Boyes Drive and then got onto the Echo Valley path, which is the wrong one! So after walking along that for a few hundred metres, I declared it definitely was the wrong one and we chalked my error up to experience but still enjoyed the wonderful view…
Towards the end of Boyes Drive, on the upper part after the fork that takes you down to the Main Rd, is the entrance to Trappies Kop…
Mike was a bit unsure of this walk. A number of years ago there was an attack on this path and it resulted in a fatality. I hadn’t heard of any muggings since, so we said a prayer and off we went. This is the view as you summit…
And looking the other way is equally as glorious…
As you come down the other side, there is loads of fynbos…
We were very quickly in Clovelly. We had walked more than 11km by now and Mike had the start of a nasty blister. I had Uber in mind, but then I remembered David. If he had gone to any church in the valley or beyond, he would be out by now, so I called him. He was at our house! He hopped in the car, drove on over and picked us up.
Altogether it was a wonderful walk. By the end, we still hadn’t finished unpacking every last detail of our 2011 holiday. We’ll reserve that for another walk. I do remember the amount of energy and prayer that went into planning it. Everything went off as planned. God was so good to us. We are grateful for His protection (our tour coach nearly had a head on collision in a tunnel in Europe) and the amazing holiday we had.
Psalm 139:5
You have hedged me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.
Amen!
These are the days.
Keep the smile going.
God bless you.
In His Grip,
Helga xx 🙂
