Last Day in Varenna

Sunday

Dear Elsie

Today was our last day in Varenna. We went out early as we had no milk so we took a walk to the village. We bought milk and croissants which are fresh daily at the little convenience store a short walk away. We then came home via the walk way next to Lake Como.

Varenna is 1000 years old. Cape Town is only 300 years old so the ancientness of this town makes Cape Town seem young. There are very old walls and buildings and signs of a very old time gone by. The pace of life is slow here and you won’t believe that a number of hotels and shops close for 4 months of the year. There are signs everywhere that say they are closed for winter and will reopen in the spring. The other thing they do is close shop for a few hours every lunchtime.

Granpa is feeling better. He went out in the morning and took a long walk up to Perledo which is on the mountainside behind where we have been staying.  This is the view from my bedroom window. And it is from this window that I watched a red fire engine zig zag its way up the mountain. I couldn’t see the fire, but the very loud, blaring siren echoed across the valley warning everyone ahead to move over and to let the people in distress know that it was on its way.

Tomorrow, we leave for Milan on the 10:35am train. The pinky/peach building in the photo above is the train station, so we will be walking there and catching the train which goes over the bridge with the arches & takes just over an hour to get to Milan. Varenna is a wonderful little place and I would definitely return if the opportunity presented itself.  Lake Como is very beautiful.

One night in Milan. Then to Venice for one night. It’s then that things will get interesting because we need a negative Covid antigen test to get on the ship. We are all okay but who knows if we have had the dreaded lurgy and will get a positive test back. So grateful for good health.

Super Sunday & a very early blog.

I love you my sweet Elsie. Lots of love and hugs to you.

Psalm 139:3
You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways.

The best is yet to come – we are only passing through.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Granny xx 🙂
