It’s really the most difficult thing to do to keep my mouth shut! It seems that when I open it, the wrong things come out, not necessarily to offend the person with whom I am speaking…no. Rather the topic strays to gossip or topics which are not that edifying. I have to catch myself and then stop in my tracks. Even if I do suddenly hear what I’m saying, it’s not easy to stop. Here’s what the Bible says…
What’s interesting about this verse is that it says, ‘think about such things.’ What we think about, we speak about.
According to research, women speak about 20 000 words a day – men only 7000! That is remarkable! How ever many words you speak a day, all of us need to heed the advice found in Jeremiah 15:11
“Therefore this is what the Lord says, ‘If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve Me; if you utter worthy, not worthless words, you will be my spokesman.'”
I was a little horrified when I read this verse again today. After all the words I’ve spoken, how many have been worthy? Repentance is indeed required. Thank Jesus that He forgives us, so that we can start afresh and begin to build on speech made up of worthy words. I want to be found trusted by God to be His spokesman. I will be watching what I say and by God’s grace and the filling of His Holy Spirit, I will be a worthy spokesman for His glory.
But it’s not easy! It’s almost better to keep quiet, until you have something worthy to say. To remind me each day to be mindful of ‘worthy words’, I’ve added it to other wisdom in my bathroom – mirror message…
The words we speak have power. Proverbs 18:21
The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.
The Bible is full of other verses that refer to the power of the tongue…
- Matthew 12:37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
- Proverbs 13:3 Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
- Proverbs 21:23 Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.
- Proverbs 10:19 Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
That’s good advice. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. The New Living Translation saying it as it it! Not easy, but if you do it, you will be better off for it.
It’s a “new day” resolution! Worthy Words!
Keep the smile going!
God bless you.
