SA Idols – Failure to Fabulous Success

2-45pm

I’m not a fan of SA Idol’s “Wooden Mic.” It’s so embarrassing and demoralising. Having said that, the contestants must know what they are in for. If they can sing, they will go through to the next round. If they can’t, they are liable to be on the receiving end of some harsh criticism. If you are really bad, you could find yourself being voted for as the worst contestant…

Wooden MicI detest seeing people humiliated. I watched a young lady last night whose voice was absolutely dreadful! She had actually auditioned for SA Idols last year as well and (naturally) did not get through. Back again in 2014 and surprisingly, Randall remembered her. He cross-questioned her about what she has done over the last 12 months to improve. She explained she had practised a lot more and spruced up her appearance and her dress. Before she started to sing, you could tell, this wasn’t going to be good. As she opened her mouth to display to the world her great talent, it was enough to make the deaf cringe. At the end, Randall, to everyone’s amusement, announced she had indeed improved since last year. No longer was she VERY, VERY BAD, now she was only VERY BAD! Of course, she did not go through to the next round.

Someone needs to tell that girl to keep her singing to the shower and focus on other talents I’m sure she has.

SA Idols may have got that contestant right. But there, I’m sure are many they don’t get right. The Wooden Mic contest is for the entrants with the worst voices. There are many who are average but not considered. There are even those with brilliant voices – who don’t go through and with those, the judges of SA Idols are left with egg on THEIR faces.

One particular young man (before he was famous!) auditioned for SA Idols a few years ago and did not make it through the preliminary round. He certainly was FAR from getting a wooden mic award, but he did not get through the second round – no golden ticket! 🙁

This  someone went onto enter a Converse songwriting competition, AND WON! He walked off with a massive prize… a trip to London to perform at the premier 100 Club AND a recording session in New York.

Then,  just a short while later, this headline came up on news media across the country…

I tunes headlineMatthew Mole, who has taken South African music to the next level with his amazing voice and unique folk-pop tunes, did not get a golden ticket.
And you know what? Now it doesn’t matter! He’s made his mark. He doesn’t need to enter. His career has taken off and he is on his way.Matthew+Mole+-+birds+to+the+sideCan you imagine how he felt when he was not successful? He knew he had a good voice….well, the thought he knew he had a good voice. Yet, he didn’t make it very far! His Mom tells me, he wasn’t all that disappointed. He just kept on singing! And it paid off…

Matthew in Hey YouEveryone likes a rags to riches story. We have to be happy for this home-town boy, who is humble and unassuming and just wants to do what he loves most.  His lyrics are meaningful with subtle signs of his faith in God – his tunes are catchy and toe tapping. He’s solid!

Matthew at Rocking the Daisies last year…

At Rocking the Daisies

What’s really cool is that, although Matthew didn’t get to Sun City in SA Idols, he did get there for the South African Music Awards where he was a finalist!

We all have gifts, some more obvious than others. If you, like me, can’t sing, DON’T audition for SA Idols. Focus on your other gifts. Dance, paint, draw, cycle, write, run, serve, cook, sew, bake, knit, care, garden, clean, hike, travel, speak….we all have something we can do and we enjoy doing. Just do it! And if you fail a few times and you know this is your gifting, just get up, brush yourself off and keep on trying.

Psalm 28 verse 7

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.

He helps me!

Yes!

Keep the smile going.

God bless you!

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
