Getting on top of Things

Monday

Today Mike was on a mission to get the building wall plate height sorted. Leanne the plans lady phoned to reassure him that according to her measurements, all was well, but no matter what she said, using her calculations, Mike didn’t get the same results.

Two things about Mike – he is very detail orientated and he is risk averse. He doesn’t take risks. If he thinks the wall plate height is wrong, he won’t depend on the competency of the plans lady or possible incompetency of the Council, he’ll work until it’s right.  Mike is a retired land-surveyor. When it comes to land, he’s no fool. Mountains are notoriously uneven. Things weren’t adding up, so he did the most sensible thing and called the land surveyor who has done umpteen measurements at the site to make sure the building started in the right place, it was centred and the roof height was right. Now it’s time to get him back again to do an official measurement specifically for Council to prove that the wall plates are no more than 8m from the median point of the house.

Who knew? These are the details that crop up when building a house.

Today, I surrendered. No longer will I stress over such little things. I will keep my sense of humour and hold Mike’s hand as he grinds through minuscule details, checking and double checking that crazy things won’t happen – like a column going through our headboard or cupboard doors that can’t open due to the door being in the way.  What a blessing having a very detail orientated and risk averse husband. Left to me, there would have been a number of oopsies that may never have been picked up til it was too late. There may still be a couple of unexpected outcomes, but we are trying to avoid them.

Meantime, back at the site, the back wall is up with window space for Mike’s study and one for the scullery…

The stairs to the top floor will go just above the scullery window. This is the view from the other side…

So Werner, the builder is in Europe until next week. He has left his trusty foreman, Witness, in charge. Tomorrow Witness will pick up the tiles for the lower ground floor and tiling should commence. I’ll be watching that closely, specially when it comes to the grout. The light steel frame for the ground floor is being manufactured and the windows for that floor are being ordered. The internal cladding is still on a ship due to arrive next month, so that won’t be happening for a while.

Hoping for no more side swipes of unexpected obstacles. I’m sure there will be – may they be little ones!🤪 My stress levels are way down. 👏 Can’t believe we’ve got this far.

Yesterday I did a bit of work, so today I was not overwhelmed. Mike and I both went to the dentist. I need a tooth fixed but he said he couldn’t do it without removing part of my braces, so I have to find out from the Orthodontist what he suggests. The tooth is not worrying me. I’d like to kick fixing it down the road to when I’m done with my braces, but the Ortho seldom sees things my way!

My neck is better. The flame lily almost died. It’s now in the ICU (kitchen) getting resuscitated. There is still a faint sign of life. I’ll see what it looks like tomorrow.

Psalm 20:4

May He grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed.

Ah yes, I’ll take that one today!

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
