Get What You Get And Don’t Get Upset!

Thursday

Thanks Gerrie. When we were in the Drakensberg a few months ago, Gerrie (my niece, Jessica’s husband) was trying to fix the TV reception when this phrase came up. ” You get what you get and you don’t get upset.” Since then,  Mike and I have said it dozens and dozens of times and it is becoming more frequent now that we are building.

This ‘Gerrie-ism’ can be applied to just about anything. When dinner doesn’t quite work out, marriage to me and whenever there is a compromise to be had. Like when the builders build a wall 3cm too short and as a result the light switch will be obstructed by the door by 3cm. These things put Mike out. Me, not so much. You get what you get and you don’t get upset. After all, we are only 10% in on a marathon of a build.  Thirty years ago when we moved into this house and we started renovating, my motto was ‘I’ll get used to anything.’ And it is true. I have and with this I will as well. It’s not a big deal and Mike wasn’t upset, but he is planning on moving the light switch to the other side of the door!

One thing we are both saying – NO MORE CHANGES! When is a change is made, no matter how small, it’s a mission because the plans have to be changed, sent on and reprinted and the old ones discarded. The problem is that only when you actually stand in the building do you suddenly see something like I did this morning. “Mike,” I casually asked, “do we have a window there?” pointing to his direction. “No,” he said. “Oh,” sadly spoken. “If we did we would be able to see Ou Kaapse weg.”

Mike: “Nope! We have maxed out our energy efficiency allowance. No more windows.”

Helga: “You get what you get and you don’t get upset.”

NO MORE CHANGES!

As I write, Mike is finishing the plans for the umpteenth time to accommodate window changes in the lower ground floor. Those will be the last, I anticipate. After that, there is only one phrase to be said….

This morning, we went to the site really early, so Mike could do a few things before the workers arrived. It’s much easier working when we aren’t stepping over each other. A beautiful day…nice to be in the shadow of Elsie’s Peak…

It didn’t take us long. Mike looking at his work and pondering the next steps…

2 Samuel 22:31

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection.

Look to Him for protection.

These are the days.

Keep the smile going.

God bless you.

In His Grip,

Helga xx 🙂
